Esa Kripanik is a famous artist from the remote Inuit community of Igloolik, Nunavut. He favours stone, ivory, bone, and antler as his preferred mediums. Esa Kripanik focuses on creating sculptures to look as realistic as possible. The stone is rarely polished, and a dry flat finish is preferred.
This beautiful Narwhal is made with limestone and features an Ivory horn made from the Walrus tusk. The Narwhal is styled to look like it's riding a wave, probably with many other pod mates nearby. On the backside of the wave, there is a carving of two harp seals playing below the waves.
This Polar Bear piece is carved from soapstone and rests on a white limestone base. What makes sculptures by Esa Kripanik so different are the polished engravings often carved onto the sides. There is a beautiful arctic Narwhal on the left side of the bear and two spectacular Ring Seals on the other side.
Another piece featuring ivory is this Caribou (Tuktu in Inuktitut) in limestone. The antlers are a nearly identical pair with only minor details differentiating them. This piece features a relief of a Polar bear on one side and a wolf on the opposite side.
He did a lovely Whale Tail coming out of the water in Limestone and has several raised and polished reliefs of animals on the stone. This piece features many animals that live in the sea. A Harp Seal, Beluga and Bowhead whales, Narwhal, and a Walrus adorn this beautiful piece.
As you can see, this is a relief carving, much like his other work. But this one contains a plethora of Arctic animals! On one side we are faced with Harp and Ring Seal, Narwhal, Beluga, and Walrus. On the rear, Arctic Hare, Arctic fox, Caribou, Polar Bear, and Arctic Wolf. Basically every large mammal in our local area. (Granted, the last three animals are a LONG half-day-by-snowmobile journey away)
If you wish to purchase your own Esa Kripanik carving there are several galleries online that feature his work.
