Hello friends and book lovers! I hope you're all doing well today đ
Two years ago, I read "The Housemaid" by Freida McFadden, a psychological thriller that I absolutely loved! I bought book two, "The Housemaidr's Secret," but I still haven't started reading it; I just don't feel the same urge anymore.
And yet, a month or two ago, and I went to see the movie "The Housemaid," the adaptation of book one. The movie was good, and it made me want to read book two right then and there, but in the end, I didn't.
Last week was one of my sisters' birthdays. And my sister loved Freida McFadden's writing so much that she bought a few other books by this author: "Never lie" and "The Tenant."
And she offered to lend me the book, because according to her, the plot twist is really interesting. I just finished it and I can only agree with her!
To be honest with you⊠I literally devoured this book.
I read it in just two days.
From the very first pages, I was completely engrossed in the story.
The chapters are short, very well-paced, and above all⊠incredibly addictive. At the end of each chapter, you tell yourself, âJust one more, then Iâll stopâ⊠and in the end, you never stop. đ
So here is my review of the book âNever lieâ by Freida McFadden:
Synopsis
The story follows Tricia and Ethan, a couple who go to an isolated house to visit it.
But very quickly, a snowstorm traps them thereâŠ
While exploring the house, Tricia discovers a secret room containing audio cassettes. These recordings belong to a psychologist, Dr. Hale, who mysteriously disappeared.
By listening to these tapes, she gradually uncovers disturbing secrets⊠and realizes that this house is hiding much more than she thought.
The story alternates between the present (with Tricia and Ethan) and the past, through the psychologist's recordings.
My thoughts on the book
Overall, I loved this book.
What I appreciated most was definitely its addictive quality. It's fluid, a quick read, easy to understand⊠and above all, very well-constructed.
You always want to know what happens next.
I also really liked the structure of the story, with the alternation between the past and the present. Discovering things little by little thanks to the tapes really adds something special.
We progress through the story at the same time as the character, we piece together the puzzle⊠and I love that.
Regarding the characters, I found them all interesting. Whether it was Tricia, Ethan, or the psychologist, each one brought something to the story.
For a good part of the book, I thought I had figured out where the story was going. I even had my own little theory.
But in reality⊠not at all. đ
The plot twist is truly unexpected.
It's exactly the kind of mechanism I love: the author leads us down one path⊠which is ultimately quite far from the truth.
At the moment of the revelation, I was surprised, a little thrown, and then, thinking back on certain details⊠everything makes sense.
On the other hand, if I had to give one tiny negative point, it would perhaps be the ending.
It's surprising, clearly, but I might have liked a little more detail, but that's just my curiosity showing!
My rating
âïžâïžâïžâïžâïž / 5
Honestly, it's a 5/5 without hesitation.
I loved reading it from beginning to end. The story is very well-crafted, addictive, and the plot twist is really well done.
It's exactly the kind of psychological thriller I love to read.
In fact, I recommend this book if you enjoy mysteries, slightly oppressive atmospheres, and unexpected plot twists!
Have you ever read this book?
Or even other novels by Freida McFadden? đ
I read the summary of the novel "The Tenant" by Freida McFadden and I must admit it really appeals to me!
See you soon,

Johanna
