I hope you are all doing well. As always, it is a pleasure to come here and talk to you about what we love so much: books. If you have read my previous blogs, you may have noticed that I was going through a pretty bad reading slump. I felt that nothing captivated me, nothing excited me... until I finally came across a lighthearted book that helped me break out of that rut. Today I want to talk to you about “Caprichos Burgueses” (Bourgeois Whims), a novel written by Laura Tárraga.
La historia está ambientada en la Valencia de 1875, formando parte de las novelas de época, pero sin caer en los típicos escenarios que solemos ver —como la siempre recurrente Londres victoriana—. Esta ambientación, menos habitual en la novela romántica histórica, ya de por sí la hace bastante llamativa.
The story is set in Valencia in 1875, making it part of the historical fiction genre, but without falling into the typical settings we usually see—such as the ever-present Victorian London. This setting, less common in historical romance novels, makes it quite striking in itself.

Sin embargo, las circunstancias familiares la empujan a considerar un matrimonio para evitar quedar desheredada. Su plan inicial es que su hermano mayor se case, pero las cosas se complican cuando empieza a convivir con la familia Cortés… y ahí es donde comienza lo bueno.
The synopsis introduces us to Leonor de la Torre, a young bourgeois woman with a strong desire to remain single. However, family circumstances force her to consider marriage to avoid being disinherited. Her initial plan is for her older brother to marry, but things get complicated when she starts living with the Cortés family... and that's where the fun begins.
Debo admitir que esta historia no es de esas súper conocidas ni virales; de hecho, me atrevo a decir que es un libro más bien poco popular. Pero precisamente eso la hace especial. Su estética, su tono y la manera en que la autora construye el ambiente la vuelven una lectura bastante atractiva. Yo la conocí gracias al TikTok de la misma Laura Tárraga —que, por cierto, vende su libro con una gracia increíble— y desde ese momento me llamó la atención.
I must admit that this story is not one of those super well-known or viral ones; in fact, I dare say that it is a rather unpopular book. But that's precisely what makes it special. Its aesthetic, its tone, and the way the author builds the atmosphere make it a very appealing read. I discovered it thanks to Laura Tárraga's TikTok—who, by the way, sells her book with incredible charm—and it caught my attention from the moment I saw it.
Para alguien que viene saliendo de un bloqueo lector, creo que es un libro perfecto. No es dramático ni pesado; más bien es una comedia romántica de época, agradable y con un ritmo fresco. Aunque los personajes pertenecen a la burguesía, la autora muestra la presión social del momento sin romantizarla demasiado. De hecho, se refleja muy bien cómo las mujeres no podían heredar y debían “asegurarse” un matrimonio casi obligatoriamente. Esto añade un trasfondo interesante y hasta crítico dentro de la historia.
For someone who is coming out of a reading slump, I think this is the perfect book. It is not dramatic or heavy; rather, it is a pleasant, lighthearted period romantic comedy with a fresh pace. Although the characters belong to the bourgeoisie, the author shows the social pressures of the time without romanticizing them too much. In fact, it reflects very well how women could not inherit and had to “secure” a marriage almost compulsorily. This adds an interesting and even critical backdrop to the story.
SourceEn cuanto a la protagonista, Leonor, pensé que sería más insoportable por su terquedad… pero terminó siendo una joven bastante humana. Tiene sus caprichos —mal chiste incluido—, pero también tiene un crecimiento bonito. Su proceso de aferrarse a sus ideas y luego descubrir que lo diferente no es malo, que sentir tampoco es una debilidad, me pareció uno de los puntos fuertes del libro.
As for the protagonist, Leonor, I thought she would be more unbearable because of her stubbornness... but she ended up being a fairly human young woman. She has her whims—bad jokes included—but she also grows in a beautiful way. Her process of clinging to her ideas and then discovering that being different isn't bad, that feeling isn't a weakness either, struck me as one of the book's strengths.
Por otro lado, Francisco, el protagonista masculino, no me resultó especialmente memorable, pero cumple muy bien su papel dentro de la historia y tiene momentos encantadores que aportan bastante al romance. Y hablando del romance… ¡muy a mi gusto! Es un desarrollo suave, lento, sin prisas ni enamoramientos sin fundamento. Y sí, también tiene el cliché de “se caen mal al principio”, que en lo personal me encanta y siento que aquí está muy bien manejado.
On the other hand, Francisco, the male protagonist, wasn't particularly memorable to me, but he plays his role very well within the story and has some charming moments that add a lot to the romance. And speaking of romance... it's right up my alley! It's a gentle, slow development, without rushing or baseless infatuation. And yes, it also has the “they dislike each other at first” cliché, which I personally love and feel is very well handled here.
Los personajes secundarios también merecen mención. Sus matices, su participación y su forma de complementar la historia hacen que el universo de la novela se sienta más vivo y completo.
The secondary characters also deserve mention. Their nuances, their participation, and the way they complement the story make the universe of the novel feel more alive and complete.
SourceEn general, le doy 4/5 estrellas, sobre todo porque fue el libro que logró sacarme de meses sin leer. Si un libro consigue eso, definitivamente tiene algo bueno.
Overall, I give it 4/5 stars, mainly because it was the book that got me out of months of not reading. If a book can do that, it definitely has something good going for it.
Si están pasando por un bloqueo lector o simplemente quieren una novela romántica ligera, con estética de época y un romance que se cuece a fuego lento, “Caprichos Burgueses” puede ser justo lo que necesitan.
If you are experiencing reader's block or simply want a light romantic novel with period aesthetics and a slow-burning romance, Caprichos Burgueses may be just what you need.
