Hello everyone! How are you? Today I'm going to talk about a book I just finished reading, one that I honestly didn't think I'd ever read, at least not on my own, since I've never been drawn to Russian literature. However, my sister insisted so much that I became curious, and I truly believe this book was time very well spent.
¡Hola hola, gente de internet! ¿Cómo están? Hoy les hablaré de un libro que acabo de terminar de leer y que honestamente antes no creía que llegaría a leer, al menos no por mi cuenta, ya que nunca me he sentido atraída por la literatura rusa, sin embargo mi hermana me insistió tanto que sentí curiosidad, y de verdad que considero que esta lectura fue un tiempo muy bien invertido.
First, let me explain the situation so you understand: Anna is married to Alexei Karenin, but on her trip to Moscow, when she went to try to save her brother's marriage, she paradoxically ends up ruining her own. She meets Count Vronsky and falls madly in love with him, so they have an affair, which becomes a scandal, especially when she abandons her husband and son to follow Vronsky. The point is that while he maintains his reputation and even his status intact, she is rejected by the very society that once flattered her. How unfair! Right? But to make matters worse for Anna, she can't bear to slowly lose Vronsky. Jealousy drives her mad, and she suddenly falls into a deep depression.
Primero les voy a explicar más o menos de qué va el asunto, para que me entiendan: Anna está casada con Alexei Karenin, pero en su viaje a Moscú, cuando ella fue a intentar salvar el matrimonio de su hermano, paradójicamente termina arruinando el suyo pues conoce al conde Vronsky y se enamora perdidamente de él, así que ambos mantienen un romance, el cual se convierte en un escándalo, en especial cuando ella abandona a su esposo e hijo para seguir a Vronsky, pero el punto es que mientras él mantiene su reputación intacta e incluso su estatus, ella es rechazada por esa misma sociedad que antes la halagaba ¡Qué injusto! ¿No? Pero para colmo de males de la propia Anna ella no puede soportar que poco a poco pierde a Vronsky, los celos la hacen perder la razón y de pronto queda atrapada en una depresión profunda
Anna's story stands in stark contrast to that of Konstantin Levin, a simple landowner seeking a peaceful life in the countryside with the woman he loves, Kitty Shcherbatskaya. This contrasts sharply with the opulence and luxury Anna enjoyed, devoid of true love. However, it's impossible not to feel anger upon discovering that, despite committing the same sin of adultery, Anna was judged more harshly by society and the aristocracy in general than Vronsky, who was merely driven by a fleeting passion. I don't justify Anna's actions at all, because after all, she was committed to her husband and child, but it's heartbreaking to see how she ended up, how the society of the time forgave men while condemning women without a second thought.
La trama de Anna contrasta muchísimo con la de Konstantin Levin, un terrateniente sencillo que busca una vida plácida en el campo, al lado de la persona que ama, Kitty Shcherbatskaya, lo cuál contrasta con la fastuosidad y lujos que vivía Anna pero sin amor verdadero. Sin embargo es imposible no llenarse de rabia al descubrir que a pesar de haber cometido el mismo pecado de adulterio, la sociedad y la aristocracia en general juzgó más duramente a Anna que a Vronsky, quien solo se dejó llevar por una pasión pasajera. Yo no justifico a Anna para nada porque después de todo ella tenía un compromiso con su marido e hijo pero es triste ver como terminó, como la sociedad de la época perdonaba a los hombres y a las mujeres las condenaban sin miramientos.
But as I said, in my opinion I think that Anna and Levin represent opposite poles: she seeks adventures to escape from an imposed and monotonous life that always demands rectitude, devotion and moderation, she yearns, and although she hesitates at the beginning when weighing what she could lose, she lets herself be carried away by passion and infatuation, discovering later that she was only walking on clouds, Levin on the other hand wanted the complete opposite: stability, harmony, a simple life in the countryside, and it was thus that, despite having been rejected once, life rewarded him with true love.
Pero como les digo, en mi opinión pienso que Anna y Levin representan los polos opuestos: ella busca aventuras para escapar de una vida impuesta y monótono que exige siempre rectitud, devoción y mesura, anhela, y aunque duda al inicio al sopesar lo que podría perder, se deja llevar por la pasión y el enamoramiento, descubriendo más tarde que solo caminaba sobre nubes, Levin en cambio quería todo lo contrario: estabilidad, armonía, una vida sencilla en el campo, y fue así como, a pesar de haber sido rechazado una vez, la vida lo premió con el verdadero amor.
According to my research after reading the book, Tolstoy was a revolutionary for his time, so his novels, and especially this one, sought to criticize the rigidity of society and particularly gender injustices, such as the fact that men were justified while women were condemned for the same sin.
Según lo que estuve investigando después de leer el libro, Tolstói era un revolucionario para su época, así que sus novelas y en especial esta, buscaba criticar el acartonamiento de la sociedad y en especial las injusticias de género, como el hecho de que justificaran a los hombres y en cambio condenaran a las mujeres por el mismo pecado
