The author of this book is Nicola Gardini, and I must admit that I didn't know him before buying it. He is a 61-year-old Italian man who currently works as an Italian teacher at the University of Oxford.
In academic circles, he is known for translating several classic essays and writing collections of poetry. Furthermore, his articles can be found in major Italian newspapers such as "Corriere della Sera" and "Il Sole 24 Ore".
Plot and personal considerations
The first important thing to say is that this book is also suitable for those who have not studied Latin, as the author explains ten commonly used words that have Latin origins, and translations are always provided.
The most interesting aspect that the author emphasizes is the fact that this language is often defined as a "dead language," but it is not at all. The comparison is between Latin and a tree! Just as a tree has a trunk, branches, and leaves that reach towards the sky, Latin is like a forest that has expanded and reached us. Therefore, the professor even calls Latin a "future language”.
Over the centuries, however, these famous ten words have also completely changed their meaning! The science of words is a science which involves all aspects of knowledge and social life.
The ten words mentioned are: SIGNUM, ARS, MODUS, STILUS, VOLVO, MEMORIA, VIRTUS, CLARITAS, SPIRITUS, RETE. To give an example, the word "ART" derives from "ARS," and in most languages of the world this word has a Latin origin.

Lo scrittore di questo libro si chiama Nicola Gardini e devo ammettere che, prima dell’acquisto, non lo conoscevo. Si tratta di un letterato italiano di 61 anni che attualmente lavora come insegnante di italiano all’Università di Oxford.
Nell’ambito accademico è famoso per aver tradotto alcuni saggi classici e scritto raccolte di poesie. Inoltre, è possibile trovare i suoi articoli nei principali quotidiani italiani come “Corriere della sera” e “Il sole 24 ore”.
Trama e considerazioni personali
La prima cosa importante da dire è che questo libro è adatto anche a chi non ha studiato latino, in quanto l’autore spiega le dieci parole di uso corrente che hanno origine latina, ma ci sono sempre anche le traduzioni.
L’aspetto più interessante che l’autore ha sottolineato è il fatto che questa lingua viene spesso definita “lingua morta”, ma non lo è affatto. Il paragone è tra il latino e un albero! Allo stesso modo in cui un albero è dotato di fusto, rami e foglie che tendono verso il cielo, anche il latino è come una foresta che si è espansa ed è arrivata fino a noi. Quindi, il professore chiama addirittura il latino “lingua futura”.
Nel corso dei secoli, tuttavia, queste famose dieci parole hanno anche cambiato completamente il loro significato! La scienza della parola è una scienza che coinvolge tutti gli aspetti della conoscenza e della vita sociale.
Le dieci parole citate sono: SIGNUM, ARS, MODUS, STILUS, VOLVO, MEMORIA, VIRTUS, CLARITAS, SPIRITUS, RETE. Per fare un esempio, dalla parola “ARS” deriva “ARTE”, e nella maggior parte delle lingue del mondo questa parola ha un’origine latina.

Conclusion
This essay made me understand how important it is to study the history and language of words. Simple terms that we use daily, and which are associated with technology, actually have very ancient origins.
It's an easy-to-read and understandable book, which I would recommend to people interested in literature who want to learn some interesting facts.

Conclusione
Questo saggio mi ha fatto capire quanto sia importante studiare la storia e il linguaggio delle parole. Termini semplici che utilizziamo quotidianamente, e che vengono associati alla tecnologia, hanno in realtà origini molto antiche.
È un libro di facile lettura e comprensione, che consiglierei alle persone interessate di letteratura che vogliono imparare delle curiosità.
