Samanta Schweblin, born in Buenos Aires in 1978, is an Argentine writer. Considered one of the most outstanding contemporary writers of Argentine and Latin American literature, she has been translated into more than forty languages and has received numerous international awards. “Mariposas” is a story that belongs to the book: “Pájaros en la boca y otros cuentos” published in Argentina, in 2018.

Abstract/Resumen:
Calderón, an anxious father, finds himself talking to a friend, Gorriti, while waiting for his children to leave school. They talk about the children, how they are doing. The bell is late and the parents grow impatient. Suddenly, a butterfly lands on Calderón's shoulder and he rushes to catch it. The butterfly wants to escape, so he squeezes its wings to prevent it from escaping. The pressure is too much so the wings fall apart in his fingers. He realizes that the damage is already serious. Gorriti, who looks at him with disgust, gestures for him to let go. Finally, Calderón lets go and the butterfly falls to the ground. It tries to fly but can no longer fly. So that the butterfly does not suffer, Calderon steps on it firmly. He doesn't manage to remove his foot when the doors open and hundreds of butterflies of all colors and sizes swoop down on the parents. The other parents crowd in front of the doors and start shouting their children's names. The butterflies fly away in different directions. The parents try to catch them. Calderon remains motionless, not daring to lift his foot from the one he has killed, for fear of recognizing in its dead wings the colors of his own.
Calderón, un padre ansioso, se encuentra hablando con un amigo, Gorriti, mientras esperan la salida de sus hijos de la escuela. Hablan de los hijos, de cómo están. El timbre se retrasa y los padres se impacientan. De pronto, una mariposa se posa en el hombro de calderón y éste se apura a atraparla. La mariposa quiere escapar por lo que aprieta sus alas para que no lo logre. La presión es demasiada por lo cual las alas se deshacen en sus dedos. Se da cuenta que el daño ya es grave. Gorriti, que lo mira con asco, le hace un gesto para que la suelte. Por fin, Calderón la suelta y la mariposa cae al suelo. Intenta volar pero ya no puede. Para que esta no sufra, Calderón la pisa con firmeza. No alcanza a retirar el pie cuando las puertas se abren y cientos de mariposas de todos los colores y tamaños se abalanzan sobre los padres. Los demás padres se amontonan frente a las puertas y comienzan a gritar los nombres de sus hijos. Las mariposas se alejan volando en distintas direcciones. Los padres intentan atraparlas. Calderón permanece inmóvil sin animarse a levantar el pie de la que ha matado, por temor a reconocer en sus alas muertas los colores de la suya.
Analysis/Análisis:
The story presents an allegory of the relationship between parents and children: the overprotection and obsession of a father for his son can cause serious marks and incapacitate him to go through life alone. In this story, loaded with symbolism, reality merges with fantasy by mixing an ordinary scene with an image drawn from the imagination. The author shows us the story in a very detailed and chronological way. The first thing that jumps out at the reader is the speed with which the story is presented. Time seems to stand still in a particular scene, and what happens in a few minutes in the history lasts for the whole story.
El cuento presenta una alegoría de la relación entre padres e hijos: la sobreprotección y obsesión de un padre por su hijo puede causarle graves marcas e incapacitarlo para transitar solo por la vida. En este cuento, cargado de simbolismo, la realidad se fusiona con la fantasía al mezclar una escena corriente con una imagen extraída de la imaginación. La autora nos muestra el relato de manera muy detallada y cronológica. Lo primero que salta a la vista en el lector es la velocidad con que el relato se presenta. El tiempo parece detenido en una escena en particular y, lo que ocurre en unos minutos en la historia, dura todo el relato.
It begins with a normal, everyday scene, and then introduces a fantastic event that produces strangeness in the reader. The hypothesis of the obsession that a father can have for his son, to the point of causing him serious marks, appears in small details, however, they are so subtle that only at the end of the story the reader understands its meaning. This obsession, which stems from an overprotective love, highlights a clear criticism of paternal overprotection.
Comienza con una escena normal, cotidiana, introduciendo luego un hecho fantástico que produce extrañamiento en el lector. La hipótesis de la obsesión que un padre puede tener por su hijo, al punto de causarle graves marcas, aparece a la vista en pequeños detalles, sin embargo, son tan sutiles que sólo al llegar al final del cuento el lector comprende su significado. Esta obsesión, que parte de un amor sobreprotector, pone en relieve una clara crítica de la sobreprotección paterna.
It is a story with a lot of meaning that makes you stop to reflect on the attitude towards life that human beings have. The ending becomes sinister and causes horror, a subject that makes you think and even reread the story. She is an author I love and worth reading.
Es un cuento con mucho significado que te hace parar a reflexionar sobre la actitud ante la vida que tiene el ser humano. El final se torna siniestro y causa horror, tema que lleva a pensar e incluso a releer el cuento. Es una autora que me encanta y que vale la pena leer.
