Here is a summary of my favorite reads from the past year and my recommendation if you haven't read these books. I should clarify that this is my opinion, and if you disagree, that's fine. We all have different tastes.
La paciente silenciosa (The Silent Patient), Alex Michaelides
La historia está narrada por Theo Faber, un psicoterapeuta que se obsesiona con Alicia Berenson, condenada por el brutal asesinato de su esposo; a tal punto que logra ingresar a trabajar al psiquiátrico donde la tienen encerrada. Alicia no habla desde el incidente y Theo se propone cambiar aquella circunstancia.
The story is narrated by Theo Faber, a psychotherapist who becomes obsessed with Alicia Berenson, convicted of the brutal murder of her husband, to such an extent that he manages to get a job at the psychiatric hospital where she is confined. Alicia has not spoken since the incident, and Theo sets out to change that.
El libro trata sobre la violencia y el trauma, y está tan bien escrito que casi hasta el final no puedes ver lo que ocurre en realidad. La idea en sí no es muy original ni te deja asombrado, sin embargo está tan bien narrado que te atrapa por completo. Es un thriller corto y, en mi opinión, entretenido. A veces esto funciona más que un tedioso libro largo y predecible. Lo único que tengo que apuntar que no me gustó mucho, es esa forma extraña y sin sentido que tuvo para dividir capítulos.
The book is about violence and trauma, and it's so well written that you can't see what's really going on until almost the end. The idea itself isn't very original, nor does it leave you amazed, but it's so well narrated that it completely draws you in. It's a short thriller and, in my opinion, entertaining. Sometimes this works better than a tedious, long, and predictable book. The only thing I have to point out that I didn't like very much is the strange and meaningless way the chapters were divided.
Confianza ciega (Blind Trust), Jhon KatzenBach

Este es otro thriller muy interesante y atrapante. La trama me pareció compleja y laberíntica, lo que le da ese suspenso que nos impide dejar el libro. El argumento me pareció más original que la historia anterior y los personajes me encantaron. Sin embargo, tengo una pequeña crítica con respecto al final, es demasiado lento y la cantidad de relleno es absurda. En un momento las descripciones, tanto de la escena como de los sentimientos de los personajes, son repetitivas; con la intención evidente de alargar el suspenso. Es algo que no hacía falta porque aburre por momentos. De este autor he leído El psicoanalista y El club de los psicópatas; Confianza ciega me gustó mucho más que estos y eso que es menos conocido.
This is another very interesting and captivating thriller. I found the plot complex and labyrinthine, which creates a suspense that keeps us turning the pages. I found the plot more original than the previous story, and I loved the characters. However, I have one small criticism regarding the ending: it is too slow, and the amount of filler is absurd. At times, the descriptions, both of the scene and of the characters' feelings, are repetitive, with the obvious intention of prolonging the suspense. This is unnecessary because it becomes boring at times. I have read The Psychoanalyst and The Psychopaths' Club by this author, and I liked Blind Trust much more than those, even though it is less well known.
Misery, Stephen King
La historia gira alrededor de Paul Sheldon, un talentoso escritor de novelas románticas que tras tener un accidente se despierta bajo los cuidados de Annie Wilkes, una enfermera admiradora de sus novelas. Al principio, todo parece marchar bien, sin embargo, pronto averigua que los solícitos cuidados de la mujer sólo tienen como objetivo que continúe escribiendo más novelas de la serie de Misery, la heroína que el escritor ha matado en su última novela. Aterrorizado, descubre que la obsesiva mujer utilizará cualquier medio para conseguir su fin.
The story revolves around Paul Sheldon, a talented writer of romance novels who, after having an accident, wakes up under the care of Annie Wilkes, a nurse who is a fan of his novels. At first, everything seems to be going well, but he soon discovers that the woman's attentive care is only intended to get him to continue writing more novels in the Misery series, the heroine whom the writer has killed off in his latest novel. Terrified, he realizes that the obsessive woman will use any means necessary to achieve her goal.
Este es uno de los libros clásicos de terror de este autor y creo que se merece toda la buena fama que tiene. Es una historia perturbadora, atrapante y difícil de leer. Desde el principio sentimos la tensión y la desbordadora locura de Annie, que lleva las cosas a extremos inimaginables. Puede parecer un poco tedioso y de descripciones demasiado extensas, pero vale la pena darle una oportunidad.
This is one of the author's classic horror novels, and I think it deserves all the praise it has received. It is a disturbing, gripping, and difficult story to read. From the beginning, we feel the tension and overwhelming madness of Annie, who takes things to unimaginable extremes. It may seem a little tedious and overly descriptive, but it is worth giving it a chance.
