It chronicles a group of inseparable friends who grow up together in the exclusive neighborhood of Miraflores, in Lima. From their childhood in a religious school, you accompany these kids, the “cachorros” (puppies), as they experience everything for the first time: soccer, their first parties, the movies, learning to dance, their first cigarettes, and finally, courtship and serious relationships. The book is an X-ray of a generation and the stages of life we all share. But the heart of the story, the element that changes everything and gives it its enormous dramatic charge, is the drama of Cuéllar, one of these friends. Due to a tragic and unusual accident he suffers at school when he is attacked by a dog, his life takes a very different path from that of the rest of the group.

So, do I recommend it? Yes, I absolutely recommend it. It is a short novel, which makes it very accessible, but its emotional impact is enormous. The main reason for my recommendation is its innovative narrative style; the use of a collective narrator and its lively pace immerse you in the atmosphere of Miraflores and in the minds of the group of friends in a unique way. It is essential reading for understanding the Latin American “Boom” and, more importantly, for reflecting on the subtle cruelty of social conventions. I assure you that it is a story you will not forget.
