Hive Book Club has become a true point of reference for all reading and book lovers in general.
Today I want to bring you a book that tells the raw story of a refugee child fleeing the tribal wars in his country. I am talking about the novel by Dave Eggers entitled What's The What, finalist of the prestigious National Book Critics. contest.
The title, which does not lack originality, is actually a literal translation of the original: What is What

Hive Book Club se ha transformado en un verdadero punto de referencia para todos los amantes de la lectura y de los libros en general.
Hoy les quiero traer un libro que relata la cruda historia de un niño refugiado huyendo de las guerras tribales de su pais. Hablo de la novela de Dave Eggers titulada Que Es El Que finalista del prestigioso concurso National Book Critics.
El título, que no falta de originalidad, es realidad es una traducción literal del original: What is What
What is what is the true story of Valentino Achak Deng, a Dushanese refugee child as a result of the civil war that broke out in his country between different tribal factions against each other and against the government.
The story unfolds during the 1980s.
Qué es el qué es la historia real de Valentino Achak Deng, un niño dusanés refugiado como consecuencia de la guerra civil desatada en su país entre distintas fracciones tribales entre si y contra el gobierno.
La historia se desenvuelve a lo largo de los años 80.
Valentino Achak Deng flees his hometown and becomes one of the so-called - ironically - Lost Boys - which are nothing more than children who flee their homes for fear of being killed, often advised as a gesture of last will, by their own parents who know that their days are numbered, to find themselves harassed by paramilitary militias, the army itself, wild animals like lions and hyenas and countless diseases.
First they try to leave their country, which is already a chimerical enterprise. If they succeed, they seek refuge in Ethiopia and then move on to Kenya. There is a UN refugee camp where they are received, treated and then sent to different countries. Many go to the USA where they start a new life. Like Valentino Achak Deng.
It is the real journey, there is no fantasy or literary creativity.
Throughout the story we see the tragedy, courage and triumph of a boy (and his fellow travelers) with everything to lose, after Arab militias destroy his village, fighting against adverse natural elements and fearsome militias that respect neither age nor gender, but buoyed by the hope of a life to be won.
Beset by hunger, thirst, endless desert, lions and hyenas, they finally reach refugee camps in Ethiopia and Kenya.
Valentino Achak Deng huye de su pueblo natal y se convierte en uno más de los llamados -irónicamente- Niños Perdidos – que no son otra cosa que niños que huyen de sus casas por miedo a ser asesinados, muchas veces aconsejados como un gesto de última voluntad, por sus propios padres que saben de tener los dias contados, para encontrarse acosados por las milicias paramilares, el mismo ejército, animales salvajes como leones y hienas e infinitas enfermedades.
Primero tratan de salir de su país lo que es ya una empresa quimérica. En caso de lograrlo buscan refugio en Etiopía y luego pasan a Kenia. Allì hay un campamento de refugiados de la ONU donde son recibidos, curados y enviados luego a distintos paìses. Muchos van a los EE. UU. donde comienzan una nueva vida. Como Valentino Achak Deng.
Es el recorrido verdadero, no hay nada de fantasía o creatividad literaria.
A través de todo el relato vemos la tragedia, la valentía y el triunfo de un niño (y sus compañeros de travesía) con todo que perder, después que las milicias árabes destruyen su pueblo, luchando contra elementos naturales adversos y contra las temibles milicias que no respetan edad ni género, pero alentados por la esperanza que significa una vida por ganar.
Acosados por el hambre, la sed, el desierto interminable, los leones y las hienas, llegan finalmente a los campos para refugiados de Etiopía y Kenia.
Although his bibliography is not very extensive, Dave Eggers has always published books with a high social and humanistic content.
His first novel, You Shall Know Our Velocity, is a story about a frustrated attempt to distribute money to deserving people.
From that point on, he began publishing a collection of short stories under the title How We Are Hungry.
The book What's the What was compiled in collaboration with Lola Vollen, who specializes in issues related to human rights abuses.
Aunque su bibliografía no es demasiado extensa Dave Eggers siempre ha publicado libros con un alto contenido social y humanístico.
Su primera novela You Shall Know Our Velocity, es una historia sobre el intento frustrado de repartir dinero a gente que se lo mereciese.
A partir de ese momento comienza a publicar una colección de cuentos cortos con el título How We Are Hungry.
El libro Que Es El Qué fue compilado con la colaboración Lola Vollen, especializada en temas relacionados con abusos a los derechos humanos.
The book recreates the journey through a territory sown by a thousand dangers, told in first person by Valentino Achak Deng to Dave Eggers. We are therefore in the presence, almost, of a first-person account.
A story that shows us the true face and experience of refugees from all over the world, not only from African countries, and the dreams that each of these millions of marginalized people make as they undertake unimaginable journeys around the world every year in search of a place to settle down.
To conclude my opinion, I transcribe verbatim the words of the protagonist in an interview given after the book's publication: "This book is the honest account of my life: from the moment I was separated from my family in Marial Bai, through the thirteen years I spent in refugee camps in Kenya and Ethiopia, to my subsequent encounters with vibrant Western cultures in Atlanta and elsewhere. I was just a child when the war broke out. Like any helpless human being, I survived after crossing many grueling wildernesses as Sudanese air force bombs fell all around me, dodging land mines, pursued by wild beasts and human killers. I fed on unknown fruits, vegetables, leaves, animal carcasses, and sometimes went days without a bite to eat. At certain times the hardships were unbearable. I hated myself and tried to take my own life. Many of my friends, and thousands of my compatriots, did not make it out of this struggle alive."
El libro recrea el periplo a través de un territorio sembrado por mil peligros, contados en primnera persona por Valentino Achak Deng a Dave Eggers. Por lo tanto estamos en presencia, casi, de un relato en primera persona.
Un relato que nos muestra la verdadera cara y experiencia de los refugiados de todo el mundo, no dolo de los países africanos, y los sueños que hacen cada uno de estos millones de marginados al emprender cada año viajes inimaginables alrededor del mundo buscando un lugar donde establecerse.
Para concluir mi opinión transcribo textualmente las palabras del protagonista en una entrevista concedida luego de la publicación del libro: "Este libro es el sincero relato de mi vida: desde el momento en que me separaron de mi familia en Marial Bai, pasando por los trece años, que permanecí en campos de refugiados de Kenia y Etiopía, hasta mis posteriores encuentros con las vibrantes culturas occidentales, en Atlanta y otros lugares. Yo era solo un niño cuando estalló la guerra. Como cualquier ser humano indefenso, sobreviví tras cruzar muchos parajes agotadores mientras las bombas de las fuerzas aéreas de Sudán caían a mi alrededor, esquivando las minas de tierra, perseguido por bestias salvajes y asesinos humanos. Me alimenté de frutos desconocidos, verduras, hojas, cadáveres de animales, y a veces pasé días sin probar bocado. En ciertos momentos las penalidades fueron insoportables. Me odié a mí mismo y traté de quitarme la vida. Muchos de mis amigos, y miles de mis compatriotas, no consiguieron salir con vida de esta lucha."
