Hola, amazing Hivers and Hive Book Club members! I hope you are all feeling great and fabulous too :)
First off, let me thank my friend for inviting me to this wonderful club. Reading the other readers' posts made me write my participation in the week's writing prompt #3 and here it is :)
Some of the books on my shelves. I used to read pretty much any genre but my preferences changed over the years.
I credit my love for reading to my father who had only been to the second grade of schooling but made us learn and realize the importance of reading since we were kids. And not just reading, but the type of things we read too.
My sisters and I loved to read comic books back then and mom connived with us in buying them. We then hide them under our beds because our Dad would be mad at us when he finds out we are reading them. He would buy English magazines like News Weekly, Business Week, Reader's Digest etcetera and instructed us to read them saying we can learn better through them than the comic booklets that we spend our time with.
Books are the plane, and the train, and the road. They are the destination and the journey. They are home.” ― Anna Quindlen
Looking back in retrospect, I can say our old man was absolutely right. His unconventional way of disciplining us to read paved the way for us to learn more about the world and made us think and dream better too. And for that, I am eternally grateful to him.
Just some of the books I read these days.
So when we left home for the university, it was quite easy for us to adapt because we have been used to reading since our elementary years toward high school.
And here's to share some things about the FarmGirl as a reader :)
What is your favorite time or place to read?
I prefer reading around mid-day, just after lunchtime. Whilst the farm boy does his thing by the porch, I would sit on the sofa in our room and read. I used to read before bedtime when I was a lot younger, but now, it usually makes me sleep very soon even I have just been reading a page. But if I am having a hard time dozing off, I would read at night and I would be snoozing in no time :)
When I am needing inspiration for my writing/blogging, I read any time of the day and I do it usually seated in front of my computer.
What makes you enjoy a book?
I am more into self-improvement books these recent years, and the connection I get with what message the author is trying to convey is what makes me enjoy reading one. It keeps my interest high and makes me glued to reading as many pages as possible and even re-read the book many times over.
But when I couldn't get the hang of what the author is trying to say, it will take me more time to finish it. At times, I would put the book down and find another one.
Also, when I am so touched by what I read, I write my own notes on the page when certain thoughts come about. Or would highlight the parts that captured my heart.
Do you like to read outdoors, before bed, or on the bus on your way to work?
Outdoors? Yes, I sometimes in our porch when the weather is nice and it is not windy. Since I just stay at home, I can actually read anytime when I am so inclined.
I don't read on a running bus or car because I feel nauseous and woozy. So we just play audiobooks in the car when the husband and I go for a ride. Audiobooks have become one of my main forms of reading nowadays, especially when my eyes feel tired from reading or when my hands are busy with chores when working outside or even going for a walk.
Do you focus on character development, thoughtful messages, or the level of intrigue a plot generates in you?
It depends on the type of book that I read. When it is a novel or fiction, I am more focused on the level of intrigue that the plot generates. When reading a self-improvement book, I give more attention to the thoughtful messages and the things I can learn from them.
And I am happy that my husband shares the same view about reading too. And he got a collection of ebooks on the tab which he often reads just before he goes to bed.
So there you go about my reading. Many thanks for this initiative and I invite and
to join us too :)
Cheers everyone to beautiful life!
