Look, even before I opened it, there was something that was driving me crazy: the reviews. I mean, on one hand, I saw people giving it five stars, saying it was THE BEST thriller they had ever read, and right next to them, others were giving it a two and a half, saying it was super artificial and predictable. That divide, that brutal split in opinions, was what made me say, "Okay, I have to read this myself." I had to know which side of the fence I would end up on, because books that provoke that kind of love-it-or-hate-it reaction almost always have something interesting going on. The premise itself is a bombshell and hooks you right away. It's about a girl, Pippa, who for her final school project, decides to investigate a closed murder case from her small town.

It turns out that five years ago, a popular girl, Andie Bell, disappeared and was presumed dead. They blamed her boyfriend, Sal Singh, who then committed suicide and supposedly left a confession. Case closed, right? Well, not for Pip. She always felt that something didn't add up; she knew Sal and simply couldn't wrap her head around him being a murderer. So, her project is basically her crusade to prove his innocence and find the real killer. If you're a fan of true crime podcasts like Serial, or if you devoured documentaries like Making a Murderer, you'll get the vibe instantly. It’s that exact amateur investigator feel, digging into a story the police have already written off.

Hola a todos, espero que estén super bien el día de hoy, en esta ocasión, les quiero compartir una nueva reseña amigos fanáticos de la lectura, en esta ocasión, les hablaré de A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder de Holly Jackson.. es que, miren, antes siquiera de abrirlo, ya había algo que me tenía loco: las reseñas, o sea, por un lado veía a gente dándole cinco estrellas, diciendo que era EL MEJOR thriller que habían leído, y al lado, otros dándole un dos y medio, que porque era súper artificial y predecible.. esa grieta, esa división tan brutal de opiniones, fue lo que me hizo decir: ‘a ver, esto lo tengo que leer yo’. Tenía que saber de qué lado de la mecha iba a terminar, porque los libros que provocan eso, que o los amas o los odias, casi siempre tienen algo interesante, es que la pura premisa es una bomba y te atrapa al toque.. se trata de una chica, Pippa, que para su proyecto final de la escuela, decide que va a investigar un caso de asesinato ya cerrado de su pueblito.

Resulta que hace cinco años, una chica popular, Andie Bell, desapareció y la dieron por muerta.. le echaron la culpa al novio, Sal Singh, que luego se suicidó y supuestamente dejó una confesión. Caso cerrado, ¿no? Pues para Pip no, ella siempre sintió que algo ahí no cuadraba, ella conocía a Sal y simplemente no le cabe en la cabeza que él fuera un asesino.. así que su proyecto es, básicamente, su cruzada para demostrar que era inocente y encontrar al verdadero culpable. Si a ustedes les fascinan los podcasts de crímenes reales, tipo Serial, o se devoraron documentales como Making a Murderer, van a cachar la onda al instante, es justo esa vibra del investigador amateur que se mete a escarbar en una historia que la policía ya dio por resuelta.

Okay, so one of the most unique things about this book is how it's structured. It's not just straight text; the story is told through a mix of many formats. On one hand, you have the standard narration following Pip, but it's frequently interrupted by her project's "Production Logs," which are basically her notes, like an investigation diary. On top of that, they include transcripts of her interviews with people in town, emails, and even a little map with her scribbles on it. I listened to a part of it on audiobook, and the full-cast narration for the interviews was insane; it truly made the whole investigation feel incredibly alive. This mix of formats makes you feel like you're right there, side-by-side with Pip, going over the clues.

However, I also completely understand why some people didn't like this. Several critics point out that since Pip summarizes everything she discovers in her notes right after we've just read it, it can feel a bit repetitive, as if the author is telling you what happened twice instead of just showing you and letting you piece the puzzle together. And well, let's talk about Pip. I read somewhere that some people found the character introductions messy at first, like a bunch of names just thrown at you, and that character development fell short to prioritize the plot. And yes, I get it, especially in the first fifty pages when you're just trying to figure out who's who in the case.

But for me, Pip quickly became the anchor of the whole story. I absolutely loved her. She's brilliant, determined, and incredibly brave, but she's not a superhero. She gets scared, makes mistakes, and really struggles to step out of her comfort zone. And what I appreciated most is that she doesn't make those super stupid decisions you sometimes see in thrillers just to create a cheap plot twist; her decisions felt justified and logical, even when they were extremely dangerous.

A ver, una de las cosas más únicas de este libro es cómo está armado, la estructura..no es solo un texto y ya, la historia te la cuentan mezclando un montón de formatos: por un lado, tienes la narración normal que sigue a Pip, pero a cada rato se interrumpe con sus "Registros de Producción" del proyecto, que son básicamente sus notas, como un diario de investigación.. además de eso, te meten las transcripciones de las entrevistas que le hace a la gente del pueblo, correos electrónicos y hasta un mapita con sus garabatos encima. Yo escuché un pedazo en audiolibro, y la narración con un elenco completo para las entrevistas fue una locura; de verdad que hizo que toda la investigación se sintiera súper viva.. esta mezcla de formatos te hace sentir que estás ahí, codo a codo con Pip, revisando las pistas.

Sin embargo, también entiendo perfecto por qué a algunas personas esto no les gustó, varios critican que, como Pip resume todo lo que descubre en sus notas justo después de que lo acabamos de leer, se puede sentir un poco repetitivo, es como si la autora te contara lo que pasó dos veces en vez de solo mostrártelo y dejar que tú armes el rompecabezas. Y bueno, hablemos de Pip.. leí por ahí que a algunos la presentación de los personajes se les hizo un enredo al principio, como un montón de nombres lanzados al aire, y que el desarrollo de los personajes se quedaba corto por darle prioridad a la trama, y sí, lo entiendo, sobre todo en las primeras cincuenta páginas, cuando apenas estás tratando de ubicar quién es quién en el caso.

Pero para mí, Pip se convirtió rapidísimo en el ancla de toda la historia.. la amé, de verdad, es brillante, decidida y súper valiente, pero no es una superheroína.. se asusta, comete errores y le cuesta un montón salir de su zona de confort. Y lo que más agradecí es que no toma esas decisiones súper estúpidas que a veces ves en los thrillers solo para meter un giro de trama barato, sus decisiones se sentían justificadas y lógicas, incluso cuando eran peligrosísimas.

And this brings us to the tone. Look, for a Young Adult book, this gets surprisingly dark. Forget the typical high school drama you might imagine; there's almost no talk of proms or silly fights here. The story focuses entirely on the raw reality of a murder investigation. It gets heavy, explores some pretty serious themes, and I remember at one point thinking, "This got dark, and fast." And honestly, I loved that. It felt mature, like it respects the reader, showing that YA literature can tackle serious topics without being gratuitously morbid or graphic. It's perfect for its target audience but has a punch that I'm sure many adult thriller fans will love.

And now... the ending. Phew, this is where people are really divided. No spoilers, don't worry, but the final reveal is a bombshell. I've read people saying they "literally gasped and yelled 'WHAT?!'" and had to reread the page because they couldn't believe it. On the other hand, there are those who felt the ending was ruined by overly convenient twists and leaps of logic Pip makes to solve the case, as if it were pulled out of thin air and felt cheap. Personally, I was in the first group. My jaw dropped. I had my theories, I was following the clues, and then—boom!—I was completely wrong. The twist hit me hard, and it was one of those incredible reading moments you're always searching for. I understand the criticism that one or two of the connections Pip makes at the end feel a bit forced, but for the sheer emotional impact and shock factor... for me, it worked wonderfully.

So, who do I recommend it to? If you love mysteries that don't let you go, where the plot moves at a thousand miles per hour, and you're a fan of true crime, you are going to devour this book. It's addictive and super entertaining. Now, if you prefer slower, more literary mysteries where the author leaves breadcrumbs for you to piece together, you might get frustrated with this book's style, which can sometimes hold your hand too much. For me, this was a 4.5/5 read. I'm docking half a star because yes, I agree that the plot sometimes relies on a couple of coincidences that are too good to be true. But the protagonist is so great, the format is so unique, and that ending is so brutal that it made it an experience. It was just plain fun. And well, that's it for the review. Y esto nos lleva al tono.. a ver, para ser un libro Young Adult, esto se pone sorprendentemente oscuro, olvídense del típico drama de preparatoria que se podrían imaginar, aquí no hay casi nada de bailes de graduación o peleítas tontas; la historia se centra de lleno en lo cruda que es una investigación de asesinato.. se pone denso, explora temas bien fuertes, y me acuerdo que en un momento pensé: "esto se puso oscuro, y rapidito". Y la verdad, eso me encantó.. se sintió maduro, como que respeta al lector, demostrando que la literatura juvenil puede tocar temas serios sin ser morbosa o gráfica porque sí.. es perfecto para su público, pero tiene un punch que estoy seguro que a muchos fans adultos de los thrillers les va a fascinar.

Y ahora... el final. Ufff, aquí es donde la gente se parte en dos, sin spoilers, tranquilos, pero la revelación final es un bombazo.. he leído gente que dice que "literalmente se quedaron sin aire y gritaron '¡¿QUÉ?!'", y que tuvieron que releer la página porque no lo podían creer. Y por otro lado, están los que sintieron que el final se arruinó por giros demasiado convenientes y saltos de lógica que hace Pip para resolver el caso, como que se lo sacaron de la manga y se sintió barato..yo, personalmente, fui del primer grupo. Me quedé con la boca abierta, yo tenía mis teorías, iba siguiendo las pistas y ¡pum!, estaba totalmente equivocado.. el giro me pegó con todo, y fue uno de esos momentos de lectura increíbles que uno siempre busca. Entiendo la crítica de que una o dos de las conexiones que hace Pip al final se sienten un poco forzadas, pero por el puro impacto emocional y el factor sorpresa... para mí, funcionó de maravilla.

Entonces, ¿a quién se lo recomiendo? Si te encantan los misterios que no te sueltan, donde la trama te lleva a mil por hora y eres fan del true crime, te vas a devorar este libro, es adictivo y súper entretenido.. ahora, si eres de los que prefieren misterios más lentos, más literarios, donde el autor te va dejando migajas de pan para que tú las armes, chance y te frustres con el estilo de este libro, que a veces te lleva mucho de la mano.. para mí, esta fue una lectura de 4.5/5. Le quito media estrella porque sí, estoy de acuerdo en que a veces la trama se apoya en un par de coincidencias demasiado buenas para ser verdad. Pero la protagonista es tan genial, el formato es tan único y ese final tan brutal, que lo convirtieron en una experiencia.. fue simplemente divertido, y bueno, hasta aquí la reseña.. espero que les haya gustado, cuidense mucho!
