Hello everyone, my dear Hive Book Club community. Today, I'm going to tell you a bit about my experience with the book Binding 13 by Chloe Walsh. I went in with sky-high expectations, and let me tell you, it didn't just meet them, it completely shattered them. This book is my new obsession, a definitive favorite of the year, and it got me so hooked that I'm still recovering from a serious book hangover; it was one of those reads that grabs you and you just can't stop. But before I go on, I need to make something crystal clear, and this is the most important part of the review: this book is not for everyone. It's incredibly raw and real, and it's not a light and fluffy romance at all. It deals with very intense and sensitive topics, like severe bullying, psychological and physical abuse, and alcohol issues. These aren't things that are just mentioned in passing, you know? They are central to the characters' lives and are addressed head-on from the very first page, never romanticized. If you are sensitive to these topics, I truly recommend you look up a more detailed list of trigger warnings before diving in.

Chloe Walsh isn't afraid of the darkness and, although I think she handles it with enormous care, it can be very tough to read at times. So, with that very important warning on the table, let's talk about what the story is about. We meet our two protagonists, Shannon and Johnny, at Tommen College, a private rugby school in Ireland. Shannon is fifteen and trying to start fresh. She comes from a very difficult family environment, full of problems, and has been mercilessly bullied her entire life. She is quiet, reserved, and truly carries the weight of the world on her shoulders. On the other hand, there's seventeen-year-old Johnny. He is the star of the rugby team, on track to go pro, and his whole life revolves around staying focused. But beneath that façade, he's silently suffering from a serious injury that he's hiding from everyone, because he can't afford to take time off to recover.

Hola a todos, querida comunidad de Hive Book Club, en el día de hoy, les voy a contar un poco sobre mis experiencias con el libro Binding 13 de Chloe Walsh.. Yo llegué con las expectativas por los cielos y, déjenme decirles, que no solo las cumplió, sino que las reventó por completo.. este libro es mi nueva obsesión, un favorito definitivo del año, y me dejó tan enganchada que todavía me ando recuperando de una resaca literaria bien seria, fue una de esas lecturas que te atrapan y simplemente no puedes parar. Pero antes de seguir, necesito dejar algo súper claro, y esta es la parte más importante de la reseña: este libro no es para todo el mundo, es increíblemente crudo y real, y para nada es un romance de esos ligeritos y bonitos.. toca temas muy intensos y delicados, como bullying del feo, maltrato psicológico y físico, y problemas de alcohol.. no son cosas que se mencionan por encimita, ¿eh? Son el centro de la vida de los personajes y se hablan de frente desde la primera página, sin romantizarlos nunca, si ustedes son sensibles a estos temas, de verdad les recomiendo que busquen una lista más detallada de trigger warnings antes de meterse de lleno.

Chloe Walsh no le teme a la oscuridad y, aunque creo que lo maneja con un cuidado enorme, a veces puede ser muy duro de leer.. así que, ya con esa advertencia tan importante sobre la mesa, hablemos de qué va la historia. Conocemos a nuestros dos protas, Shannon y Johnny, en el Tommen College, un colegio privado de rugby allá en Irlanda, Shannon tiene quince años y está intentando empezar de cero.. viene de un ambiente familiar súper difícil, lleno de problemas, y le han hecho bullying sin piedad toda su vida. Es callada, reservada y de verdad que carga con el peso del mundo en los hombros.. por otro lado está Johnny, de diecisiete, él es la estrella del equipo de rugby, va para profesional, y toda su vida gira en torno a mantenerse enfocado. Pero por debajo de esa fachada, está sufriendo en silencio por una lesión grave que le oculta a todo el mundo, porque no puede darse el lujo de tomarse un tiempo para recuperarse.

The story is told from both Shannon's and Johnny's points of view, with alternating chapters, and for me, that's one of the book's greatest strengths. This dual-perspective approach gets you right inside their heads; you know what they're thinking at all times: all their insecurities, their fears, their most hidden hopes. This makes you connect deeply with them and makes their personal stories feel incredibly real and relatable. Now, be warned, although the book is categorized as a romance, the romantic aspect is a true slow burn, the kind that simmers veeeery slowly. And when I say slow burn, I'm not kidding; this is a long road, so get comfortable and be patient. At first, their interactions are few and far between, but that's precisely why each one feels so powerful and is worth its weight in gold. Even though the romance advances at a snail's pace, the main story always moves forward.

You get so invested in each character's individual development that you never, ever get bored. In fact, I'd dare to say the romance isn't even the novel's driving force; the main thing is how you get immersed in the lives of these two people who are completely broken inside and who somehow find a little bit of light in each other. What truly killed me, in the best way, was their dynamic. On their own, each of them is dealing with super heavy, serious, grown-up problems that no kid their age should ever have to face, but when they're together... that's when they finally allow themselves to just be teenagers. There's a playful vibe and a sweetness in how they treat each other that creates a stark contrast with how harsh both of their lives are. And Johnny… Johnny is the classic "touch her and you die" cliché, and here, wow, it works to perfection. He's this giant, super intimidating rugby player, and Shannon is so small and fragile next to him, that seeing him be so fierce and protective is incredibly endearing.

La historia nos la van contando desde el punto de vista de Shannon y de Johnny, con capítulos que se van alternando, y eso, para mí, es uno de los mayores aciertos del libro.. este rollo de tener las dos perspectivas te mete de lleno en sus cabezas, sabes a cada rato lo que están pensando: todas sus inseguridades, sus miedos, sus esperanzas más escondidas. Esto hace que conectes durísimo con ellos y que sus historias personales se sientan súper reales y cercanas.. ahora, ojo, aunque el libro lo catalogan como romance, la cosa romántica es un slow burn de esos de verdad, de los que se cocinan a fuego suuuuperlento. Y cuando digo slow burn, no estoy jugando, este es un camino largo, así que pónganse cómodos y con paciencia.. al principio, sus interacciones son contaditas, pero justo por eso cada una se siente súper potente y vale oro, aunque el romance avanza a paso de tortuga, la historia principal siempre sigue para adelante.

Te clavas tanto en el desarrollo de cada personaje por su lado que nunca, pero nunca, te aburres.. de hecho, me atrevería a decir que el romance ni siquiera es el motor de la novela; lo principal es cómo te metes en la vida de estas dos personas que están rotísimas por dentro y que de alguna forma encuentran un poquito de luz el uno en el otro.. lo que a mí me mató, de verdad, fue la dinámica que tienen. Cada uno por su lado está lidiando con problemas súper densos, serios, de gente grande, que de verdad ningún chico de su edad debería estar enfrentando, pero cuando están juntos.. ahí es cuando por fin se permiten ser simplemente adolescentes.. hay una onda juguetona y una dulzura en cómo se tratan que hace un contraste brutal con lo dura que es la vida de ambos. Y Johnny… Johnny es el típico cliché del "tócala y te mueres", y aquí, ¡uf!, funciona a la perfección.. él es este jugador de rugby gigante que impone un montón, y Shannon es tan chiquita y frágil a su lado, que verlo ser tan fiero y protector te da una ternura increíble.

And let's not even talk about the secondary characters, because they are an absolute gem. Gypsy, Johnny's best friend, is a fantastic character: loyal, funny, truly the friend everyone would want to have. Then there's Joe, Shannon's brother, who is super protective of her and ends up forming a very strange, yet touching, friendship with Johnny. The supporting cast is so well-developed that you end up getting just as hooked on them, and you can easily imagine them starring in their own books later on. Now, if I had to find a "but," it would be that it's a very long, slow-paced book, and that might not appeal to some readers. Every page feels necessary to fully immerse you in the characters, but yes, you do have to invest a good amount of time. However, for me, that depth was a good thing, not a bad one. The payoff at the end makes the entire wait worthwhile. I give Binding 13, without a second thought, a solid 5/5 stars.

This book is a punch straight to the heart, but in a good way. It's a story about pain, about survival, and about that small hope of finding someone who sees you for who you truly are. On top of that, it ends on a cliffhanger that left me hanging by a thread. So, who is this book for? If you love stories with deep and complex characters, aren't afraid of dark and heavy themes, and love a good, worthwhile slow burn set in a world that completely captivates you… then please, drop everything you're doing and go read it right now. Y ni hablemos de los personajes secundarios, porque son una joya, Gypsy, el mejor amigo de Johnny, es un personajazo: leal, divertido, de verdad, el amigo que todo el mundo quisiera tener.. luego está Joe, el hermano de Shannon, que es súper protector con ella y termina teniendo una amistad bien rara, pero conmovedora, con Johnny. Los personajes de reparto están tan bien hechos que te terminas enganchando igual con ellos, y fácil te los imaginas protagonizando sus propios libros más adelante.. ahora, si tuviera que buscarle un "pero", sería que es un libro larguísimo y de ritmo lento, y eso puede que a algunos lectores no les guste. Cada página se siente necesaria para meterte de lleno en los personajes, pero sí, hay que invertirle un buen de tiempo.. sin embargo, para mí, esa profundidad fue algo bueno, no algo malo, la recompensa al final hace que toda la espera valga la pena, a Binding 13 le doy, sin pensarlo dos veces, unas 5/5 estrellas..

Este libro es un golpe directo al corazón, pero de los buenos, es una historia sobre el dolor, sobre sobrevivir, y sobre esa pequeña esperanza de encontrar a alguien que te vea por quien eres de verdad.. encima, termina en un cliffhanger que me dejó con el alma en un hilo, etonces, ¿para quién es este libro? Si a ustedes les encantan las historias con personajes profundos y complejos, no le temen a los temas oscuros y pesados, y aman un buen slow burn de esos que valen la pena, ambientado en un mundo que te atrapa por completo… entonces, por favor, suelten todo lo que están haciendo y vayan a leerlo ahora mismo.. si andan buscando una lectura ligerita y fácil, esta no es.. y bueno amigos, hasta aquí la reseña de hoy!
