Hello everyone, friends from the Hive Book Club, I hope you're doing great today. On this occasion, I'm going to talk about another book by Lisa Jewell, in this case, Don't Let Him In. I mean, this woman knows exactly what she's doing; we're in good hands. So I started Don't Let Him In with all the hype she always generates for me, and honestly, it really made my head spin... it's one of those books I finished a little while ago, but I'm still processing. But let me give you a heads-up: if you're expecting one of those heart-stopping thrillers, with non-stop action and a twist on every page, you might want to lower your expectations a notch or two. Although Lisa Jewell is the queen of domestic suspense, this book has a much more literary vibe. I would say it's more of a "literary thriller" or, to be more precise, a psychological drama where the characters are EVERYTHING. The suspense isn't so much in what's happening, but in the why of it all, and in seeing how these two worlds collide, because you know, you FEEL, that disaster is inevitable.

The tension is a slow burn, with that nagging suspicion that won't leave you alone, that gut feeling that something is very, very wrong. At the center of it all is a guy who is a master of deceit, a textbook womanizer living a double life. On one hand, we see him slowly worming his way into the life of Nina, who has just been widowed, and her daughter Ash, who protects her like a lioness. They are grieving the father's death, which was very sudden and violent, and this guy shows up pretending to be an old friend who just wants to lend a hand. And at the same time, in parallel, is the story of Martha, a mother living in another town who is no longer buying any of her husband's absences and cheap excuses. The brilliant part is that we, the readers, know from the beginning it's the same man, and the author masterfully jumps between these women's lives while they, little by little, begin to catch on to the lie that surrounds them.

Hola a todos, amigos de Hive Book Club, espero que estén super bien hoy, en esta ocasión, les voy a hablar de otro libro de Lisa Jewell, en este caso Don't Let Him In, o sea, esta mujer sabe perfectamente lo que hace, estamos en buenas manos. Así que empecé Don't Let Him In con todo ese hype que siempre me genera, y la verdad, me dejó la cabeza dando mil vueltas.. es de esos libros que terminé hace un tiempito, pero que todavía estoy procesando. Pero a ver, una advertencia de entrada: si ustedes esperan un thriller de esos de infarto, con acción a mil por hora y un giro en cada página, mejor váyanle bajando dos rayitas a la emoción.. aunque Lisa Jewell es la reina del suspenso doméstico, este libro se va por una onda mucho más literaria. Yo diría que es más un "thriller literario" o, para ser más exactos, un drama psicológico donde los personajes lo son TODO.. el suspenso no está tanto en qué está pasando, sino en el porqué de las cosas, y en ver cómo chocan estos dos mundos, porque sabes, SIENTES, que el desastre es inevitable, la tensión se va cocinando a fuego lento, con esa sospecha que no te deja en paz, esa sensación en la panza de que algo anda muy, pero muy mal.

El centro de todo es un tipo que es un maestro del engaño, un mujeriego de manual que vive una doble vida.. por un lado, lo vemos cómo se va metiendo poco a poco en la vida de Nina, que acaba de enviudar, y de su hija Ash, que la cuida como una leona.. ellas están pasando por el duelo de la muerte del papá, que fue súper repentina y violenta, y el tipo se aparece como un supuesto viejo amigo que solo quiere darles una mano. Y al mismo tiempo, en paralelo, está la historia de Martha, una mamá que vive en otro pueblo y que ya no se traga ni medio cuento de las ausencias y las excusas baratas de su esposo, lo genial es que nosotros, los lectores, sabemos desde el principio que se trata del mismo hombre, y la autora va saltando entre la vida de estas mujeres de una forma magistral, mientras ellas, poquito a poco, empiezan a cachar la mentira que las envuelve.

People, in this story, what's awesome, what really matters, are the characters. I swear, they're the heart of everything, and this is where Jewell's writing shines. I connected with Ash; she was like my grounding wire throughout the book. She's super smart, intuitive, and from minute one, she has that nagging feeling, that feeling that her mom's new boyfriend is "too good to be true," and it's thanks to her that things start moving. Her protective instinct feels so real, so genuine. Then you have her mom, Nina, who, of course, with all the pain of mourning, is easy prey for the guy's charms. And yes, at times she'll drive you crazy and you'll want to scream at the page, but her decisions come from a loneliness so, so human, that the author paints her with incredible empathy. And the path Martha takes, from being a super-loving wife to a woman consumed by doubt—whew!—it grips you just as strongly. Even the villain, this chameleon who is sometimes Nick and sometimes Al, is fascinating in his horrible ways. I mean, you hate him with all your heart; he's a wretch, but his ability to manipulate people is so pure, so perfect, and at the same time so macabre, that you can't stop reading. To tell us this, Jewell uses a ton of points of view and jumps around in time.

And for me, it was absolutely necessary, because only then do you piece together the complete puzzle of deception. He lets you see the lies from all sides. I must warn you, though, that the beginning may feel a bit slow, perhaps even a bit tangled as you try to figure out who's who. But bear with me for a moment! Don't let go, because once the story takes off, it becomes a web so tightly woven that there's no way out. This book is a gem for understanding themes like deception, the fragility of trust, and, above all, the power of female intuition. It's not so much about a crime, but about the psychological devastation left by a betrayal. And that's precisely why, I tell you, it's the PERFECT choice for a book club. This story is made for discussion, for dissecting. You'll want to debate why the characters did what they did, ask yourselves "what would I have done?", and analyze every little red flag you ate with chips.

Gente, en esta historia lo que rifa, lo que de verdad importa, son los personajes. Les juro, son el corazón de todo y aquí es donde la escritura de Jewell se luce. Yo conecté cañón con Ash, ella fue como mi cable a tierra en todo el libro. Es súper inteligente, intuitiva, y desde el minuto uno tiene esa espinita, ese presentimiento de que el nuevo galán de su mamá es "demasiado bueno para ser verdad", y es gracias a ella que la cosa empieza a moverse. Su instinto de protección se siente tan real, tan genuino. Luego tienes a su mamá, Nina, que claro, con todo el dolor del luto, es presa fácil para los encantos del tipo. Y sí, a veces te va a desesperar y vas a querer gritarle a la página, pero es que sus decisiones vienen de una soledad tan, pero tan humana, que la autora te la pinta con una empatía increíble. Y el camino que recorre Martha, de ser una esposa súper enamorada a una mujer a la que se la come la duda, ¡uf!, te atrapa igual de fuerte. Incluso el villano, este camaleón que a veces es Nick y a veces es Al, es fascinante dentro de lo horrible que es. O sea, lo odias con toda tu alma, es un desgraciado, pero su habilidad para manipular a la gente es tan limpia, tan perfecta y al mismo tiempo tan macabra, que no puedes dejar de leer. Para contarnos esto, Jewell usa un montón de puntos de vista y salta en el tiempo.

Y para mí, era súper necesario, porque solo así te armas el rompecabezas completo del engaño. Te deja ver las mentiras desde todos los lados. Eso sí, les aviso que el principio puede sentirse un poco lento, quizás hasta medio enredado mientras tratas de cachar quién es quién. Pero ¡aguántenme tantito! No lo suelten, porque una vez que la historia agarra vuelo, se convierte en una telaraña tan bien tejida que ya no hay forma de salirse. Este libro es una joya para entender temas como el engaño, lo frágil que es la confianza y, sobre todo, el poder de la intuición femenina. No se trata tanto de un crimen, sino del desmadre psicológico que deja una traición. Y justo por eso, se los digo, es la elección PERFECTA para un club de lectura. Es que esta historia está hecha para discutirla, para desmenuzarla. Van a querer debatir por qué los personajes hicieron lo que hicieron, preguntarse "¿y yo qué hubiera hecho?", y analizar cada banderita roja que se comieron con papitas.

And now, people, we have to talk about the ending. Oof! Because this is where the literary gossip, the book club debate, is going to get GOOD, like, really good. I've seen it all online, people are divided. There's one team that says the ending is terrible, that it left them super annoyed, frustrated, to the point that it ruined the whole book for them. And then there's the other team that says yes, it leaves you unsettled, but ultimately it makes sense and that feeling of unease fits the story perfectly. I'm not going to tell you which side of the fence I'm on so I don't spoil anything for you, but I swear this controversy is part of what makes this book what it is. The author really took a gamble with this decision, and look, whether you love it or hate it, you're definitely going to have a strong opinion. So, who is this book for?

Well, if you love those slow-burn stories that get inside the characters' heads and don't let go, this book is for you. If you enjoy diving deep into complex characters and exploring the darker side of relationships, you'll find pure gold here. But if what you're looking for are constant plot twists and an ending where everything is neatly tied up, mmm, you might be left thinking, "what just happened?". I give Don't Let Him In a 4/5. The writing is flawless, the characters are wonderful, and how the author creates tension from mere silences and glances, oof, it's genius. I knocked off one star for that polarizing ending and because I found the beginning a bit slow. But other than that, it's a very powerful novel that makes you think and stays with you. It's one of those stories that remind you that evil sometimes comes with the most charming smile in the world, and that the little voice inside you, that sixth sense, is almost always right. Y ahora sí, gente, tenemos que hablar del final. ¡Uf! Porque aquí es donde el chismecito literario, el debate del club de lectura, se va a poner BUENO, pero bueno de verdad. He visto de todo en internet, la gente está partida en dos.. hay un team que dice que el final es malísimo, que los dejó súper molestos, frustrados, al punto de que les arruinó todo el libro. Y luego está el otro team que dice que sí, que te deja intranquilo, pero que al final tiene sentido y que esa sensación de desasosiego le queda perfecta a la historia, yo no les voy a decir de qué lado de la mecha estoy para no spoilearles nada, pero les juro que esta polémica es parte de lo que hace a este libro lo que es. La autora se la jugó con esta decisión, y miren, lo amen o lo odien, de que van a tener una opinión fuerte, la van a tener. Entonces, ¿para quién es este libro? A ver, si a ti te encantan esas historias que se cocinan a fuego lento, que se meten en la cabeza de los personajes y no te sueltan, este libro es para ti.

Si te gusta clavarte en personajes complejos y explorar el lado más oscuro de las relaciones, aquí vas a encontrar oro puro.. pero si lo que buscas son giros de tuerca a cada rato y un final donde todo quede súper clarito y amarrado, mmm, chance y te quedas con cara de "¿qué pasó?". A Don't Let Him In yo le 4/5.. La forma en que está escrito es impecable, los personajes son una maravilla, y cómo la autora crea esa tensión a partir de puros silencios y miradas, ¡uff!, es de genios.. le bajé una estrellita por ese final que divide aguas y porque el arranque se me hizo un poquito lento. Pero fuera de eso, es una novela con muchísima fuerza, que te pone a pensar y que se te queda pegada en la cabeza.. de esas historias que te recuerdan que el mal a veces viene con la sonrisa más encantadora del mundo, y que esa vocecita en tu interior, ese sexto sentido, casi siempre tiene la razón.. y bueno, hasta aquí la reseña de hoy, cuidense mucho!
