I just finished Intermezzo by Sally Rooney, and well, there's a lot to unpack, surely many people have read it, and it's good, obviously, it has its excitement, but sometimes I feel that all that "Sally Rooney effect", all the discussion of whether she's a literary phenomenon and what not, it kind of overshadows the books themselves... it's a shame, because the woman writes incredibly and her stories really make you think, my first feeling when I turned the last page was like a deep calm, it's a book that gets to you, it's about two brothers, Peter and Ivan, who are there, seeing how they carry on after their father passed away, Peter is a lawyer, he's around thirty, and Ivan, the youngest, is a chess genius, about ten years younger... they are in very different stages of life, and the story gets right into how they deal with grief, their relationship, which is very complex, and their love affairs.

The style is distinctive... if you've read it before, you'll immediately recognize the snappy dialogue and how it immediately draws you into the characters' heads. What I thought was especially great about Intermezzo is how it uses slightly different narrative styles for each brother. Peter's parts are like giant, dense blocks of text, sometimes without quotation marks, and that immediately immerses you in his head, in what he's feeling at the moment! It's intense, it demands that you focus... and then, Ivan's parts feel a touch more structured, like a counterpoint, which fits perfectly with his chess-player personality: super analytical, half-aware that he's bad at socializing, and with all his internal anxieties. It's a really clever way of differentiating them and drawing you into each one's world... and the dialogue, phew! As always: there's so much of it, and it feels so real that it's where almost everything develops, the characters and the plot.

Hola a todos, amigos fanáticos de las buenas historias, espero que estén genial, en este día, les hablaré de una un libro interesante.. acabo de terminar Intermezzo, de Sally Rooney, y bueno, hay un montón para desmenuzar, seguramente muchas personas lo han leído, y está bueno, obvio, tiene su emoción, pero a veces siento que todo ese "efecto Sally Rooney", toda la discusión de si es un fenómeno literario y qué sé yo, como que opaca un poco los libros en sí.. es una pena, porque la mujer escribe increíble y sus historias de verdad te hacen reflexionar, mi primera sensación al darle la última página fue como una calma profunda, es un libro que te llega, trata de dos hermanos, Peter e Ivan, que están ahí, viendo cómo siguen después de que falleció su papá, Peter es abogado, anda por los treinta, e Ivan, el menor, es un genio del ajedrez, unos diez años más chico.. están en etapas súper distintas de la vida, y la historia se mete de lleno en cómo llevan el duelo, su relación, que es bien compleja, y sus enredos amorosos.

El estilo es distintivo.. si ya la leyeron, van a reconocer al toque esos diálogos ágiles y cómo te mete de una en la cabeza de los personajes, lo que me pareció especialmente bueno en Intermezzo es cómo usa formas de narrar un poquito diferentes para cada hermano, las partes de Peter son como unos bloques de texto gigantes, densos, a veces sin las comillas en los diálogos, ¡y eso te sumerge de una en su cabeza, en lo que está sintiendo en el momento! Es intenso, te exige estar bien concentrado.. y después, las partes de Ivan se sienten un toque más estructuradas, como si fuera un contrapunto, lo que encaja perfecto con su personalidad de ajedrecista: súper analítico, medio consciente de que es malo para lo social y con todas sus ansiedades internas. Es una forma re inteligente de diferenciarlos y de atraparte en el mundo de cada uno.. y los diálogos, ¡uff!, como siempre: hay muchísimos y se sienten tan reales que es donde se desarrolla casi todo, los personajes y la trama.

And the characters... you believe them so much it almost hurts a little... they show us those little things that are barely noticeable in how we relate to each other... there you have Peter and Ivan, both with their things, trying to get ahead, and when they talk... ugh!, you can see there is a ton of history and things that are not said, then there are the women that appear in their lives. Ivan hooks up with Margaret, who is much older, like she is around 35 and he is in his twenties... the relationship between them really shows you this thing about the age difference and how each one is at a different stage of life.

Peter, on the other hand, is there, somewhat complicated after a serious relationship he had with Sylvia, and he also gets involved with a younger girl, Naomi... the book delves into those power dynamics that sometimes exist in couples, whether it be age, money or if one is emotionally dependent on the other, but without giving you any direction, okay? It's more like it shows you, it exposes these incredibly complicated connections, and that's it... the themes are typical Rooney themes, but here they feel more mature, more polished. Grief is a huge theme, and how each brother handles it in a very different way, but it also speaks to family, to those ties that bind you and sometimes, well, also squeeze you a little. And obviously, love and relationships, with all that beautiful mess they have... one of the things that left me thinking the most is how the book delves into the idea that Peter realizes that, maybe, he can love two women at once.

Rooney doesn't paint it as a typical love triangle that just needs to be resolved, but as something deeper. It felt risky, this idea that our common idea of ​​love and commitment sometimes isn't enough to explain what we truly feel. It doesn't give you easy answers, not at all, but it leaves your head spinning. In addition to all that, it touches on topics like capitalism, monetary inequality, those strange pressures of online life, and even feminism, especially with Peter's work as a lawyer and some of Ivan's rather old-fashioned ideas about women.

Y los personajes... te los creés tanto que hasta duele un poquito.. nos muestran esas cositas que apenas se notan en cómo nos relacionamos los unos con los otros.. ahí los tienes a Peter e Ivan, los dos con sus cosas, tratando de salir adelante, y cuando hablan... ¡uff!, se nota que hay un montón de historia y cosas que no se dicen, después están las mujeres que aparecen en sus vidas. Ivan se engancha con Margaret, que es bastante más grande, onda que ella tiene unos 35 y él anda por los veintipico.. la relación entre ellos te muestra con mucha onda eso de la diferencia de edad y cómo cada uno está en una etapa distinta de la vida.

Peter, por su lado, está ahí, medio complicado después de una relación seria que tuvo con Sylvia, y también se mete con una chica más joven, Naomi.. el libro se mete de lleno en esas dinámicas de poder que a veces hay en las parejas, ya sea por la edad, la plata o si uno depende emocionalmente del otro, pero sin bajarte línea, ¿eh? Es más como que te lo muestra, te expone esas conexiones complicadísimas y listo.. los temas son los típicos de Rooney, pero acá se sienten como más maduros, más pulidos. El duelo es un tema muy grande y cómo cada hermano lo lleva de una forma súper distinta, pero también habla de la familia, de esos lazos que te unen y a veces, bueno, también te aprietan un poco. Y obvio, el amor y las relaciones con todo ese quilombo hermoso que tienen.. una de las cosas que más me dejó pensando es cómo el libro se mete con la idea de que Peter se da cuenta de que, capaz, puede querer a dos mujeres a la vez..

Rooney no te lo pinta como el típico triángulo amoroso que hay que resolver y ya, sino como algo más profundo, se sintió arriesgado, esto de que nuestra idea común de amor y compromiso a veces no alcanza para explicar lo que de verdad sentimos. No te da respuestas fáciles, para nada, pero te deja la cabeza dando vueltas, además de todo eso, toca temas como el capitalismo, la desigualdad de dinero, esas presiones raras de la vida online, y hasta el feminismo, sobre todo con el trabajo de abogado de Peter y algunas ideas medio viejas que tenía Ivan sobre las mujeres.

Something that touched my soul was the honesty with which he shows you emotions, just like that, without a filter... there are moments of enormous intimacy, both of skin and of what you feel inside, that Rooney writes with one hand... that never feel unnecessary or uncomfortable, they are simply human, they show you in the raw, they capture that half-heavy feeling, that even gives you the creeps, that another person sees you as you are, with all your tricks. And the way he paints that back and forth in the conversations, the blunders, that anxiety that goes unspoken but is there, waiting by the phone… there’s a very real tenderness in Ivan and Margaret’s relationship that I found especially beautiful, I loved it… Now, if I have to point out something, which, mind you, is not that it’s bad, but rather a warning for those who dare to read it: Peter’s narration style, with those dense texts and the lack of quotation marks in the dialogues, requires you to be very concentrated… it’s really effective at getting into his head, but if you’re looking for a read to just pass the time, somewhat quickly, you might find it a bit dense.

It’s not a defect, eh?, it’s more of a characteristic of the book that asks you to get hooked… Who is this book for? Look, if you like those novels that delve deeply into the characters, that analyze the twists and turns of today's relationships and people's minds, this is for you. It's for readers who like those more relaxed stories that leave you thinking a lot even after you finish... it's a very literary book, but I assure you that it will draw you in once you get the hang of it. Algo que me llegó hasta el alma fue la honestidad con la que te muestra las emociones, así, sin filtro.. hay momentos de una intimidad gigante, tanto de piel como de lo que sentís por dentro, que Rooney escribe con una mano... que nunca se sienten de más o incómodos, son simplemente humanos, te muestran en carne viva, capta esa sensación medio heavy, que hasta te da cosita, de que otra persona te vea tal cual eres, con todas tus mañas. Y la forma en que te pinta ese tire y afloje en las charlas, las metidas de pata, esa ansiedad que no se dice pero que está ahí, esperando al lado del celu… hay una ternura muy real en la relación de Ivan y Margaret que me pareció especialmente hermosa, me encantó.. ahora, si tengo que marcar algo que, ojo, no es que esté mal, sino más bien un aviso para los que se animen a leerlo: el estilo de narración de Peter, con esos textos densos y la falta de comillas en los diálogos, te pide que estés bien concentrado.. es re efectivo para meterte en su cabeza, pero si buscas una lectura para pasar el rato nomás, medio rapidita, capaz te resulte un toque denso.

No es un defecto, ¿eh?, es más una característica del libro que te pide que te enganches.. para quién es este libro? Mira, si te gustan esas novelas que se meten a fondo con los personajes, que analizan las vueltas de las relaciones de hoy y la cabeza de la gente, esto es para ti, es para lectores a los que les gustan esas historias más tranqui que te dejan pensando un montón de cosas incluso después de terminar.. es un libro bien literario, pero te aseguro que te atrapa una vez que le agarras el ritmo.
