Hello everyone, fellow readers, I hope you're having a great day. I'm here, pretty excited to bring you a new review, and this time I'll be talking about a curious book: Once Upon a Broken Heart. I went into this book with expectations that were... phew, sky-high! I mean, if you've been into YA fantasy for a while, you know perfectly well that Stephanie Garber's Caraval series is... a heavyweight! I was one of those who got obsessed, who got lost in that super magical and even a little creepy carnival world... so, you can imagine, when they announced a spin-off in the same universe, I couldn't believe it. The excitement was real! But, obviously, there was also that little fear, the nervousness about whether it would have the same magic... The first thing I'll tell you is that... the vibe is different, but in a good way! Caraval was like this fever dream, a super crazy and beautiful Alice in Wonderland-type trip... whereas reading Once Upon a Broken Heart is literally like opening a classic "Once upon a time..." fairy tale book. You can feel that magic on every page.

The way Stephanie Garber writes is... brilliant. She describes the castles, the dresses, the potions, and it's so vivid you feel like you're right there. I swear, there were moments I felt completely immersed in the fantasy of this Northern kingdom. If you love that whole fairy tale vibe—the romance, the danger, that sense of wonder—you're going to feel right at home here. Well, our protagonist here is Evangeline Fox. She's a true romantic who grew up with tales of princes and blindly believes in happy endings... but, what happens? The supposed love of her life suddenly gets engaged to her stepsister, and Evangeline, in her desperation and convinced it's a curse, makes a pact with a Fate... not just any Fate, oh no... with the Prince of Hearts himself, Jacks.

And here, let's talk about Evangeline, because she can be... a bit much. Sometimes she's super naive, seriously, the kind where you're reading and want to scream at the book, "Girl, get a clue, please!" But, at the same time, that hope she has, that blind faith, is also what makes her strong. I honestly found her endearing, though I won't deny that some of her decisions got on my nerves. But that's what her story is about, seeing how her whole idea of love shatters into a thousand pieces, and that development, people, is very, very well done.

Hola a todos, amigos lectores, espero que el día de hoy estén super bien, yo vengo algo emocionado a traerles una nueva reseña, esta vez les hablaré de un libro curioso, se trata de Once Upon a Broken Heart.. yo llegué a este libro con unas expectativas... ¡uf, por las nubes, altísimas.. o sea, si ustedes ya llevan un rato metidos en la fantasía juvenil, saben perfecto que la saga Caraval de Stephanie Garber es... ¡un peso pesado! Yo fui de esos que se obsesionaron, que se perdieron en ese mundo de carnaval súper mágico y hasta medio creepy.. así que, imagínense, anuncian un spin-off en el mismo universo y yo estaba que no me la creía. ¡La emoción era real! Pero, obvio, también estaba el miedito, el nervio de si iba a tener la misma magia.. lo primero que les digo es que... la vibra es distinta, ¡pero para bien, eh! Caraval era como este sueño febril, como un trip super loco y hermoso tipo Alicia en el País de las Maravillas.. en cambio, leer Once Upon a Broken Heart es, literal, como abrir un libro de cuentos de hadas de los clásicos, de los de "Había una vez...".

Esa magia se siente en cada página. La forma en que escribe Stephanie Garber es... genial, te describe los castillos, los vestidos, las pócimas y es tan vívido que sientes que estás ahí.. se los juro, había momentos en que me sentía totalmente metido en la fantasía de este reino del Norte. Si a ustedes les encanta toda esa onda de los cuentos de hadas —el romance, el peligro, esa sensación de maravilla— aquí se van a sentir en su salsa.. bueno, nuestra prota aquí es Evangeline Fox, ella es una romántica de las que creció con cuentos de príncipes y cree ciegamente en los finales felices.. pero, ¿qué pasa? El supuesto amor de su vida de la nada se compromete con su hermanastra y Evangeline, en su desesperación y convencida de que es una maldición, hace un pacto con un Destino.. no con cualquiera, no, no, no... con el mismísimo Príncipe de Corazones, Jax.

Y aquí, a ver, hablemos de Evangeline, porque ella puede ser... un tema, a veces es súper ingenua, de verdad, de esas que estás leyendo y le quieres gritar al libro: "¡Amiga, date cuenta, por favor!".. pero, al mismo tiempo, esa esperanza que tiene, esa fe ciega, es también lo que la hace fuerte. A mí, la verdad, me pareció un amor, aunque no les niego que con algunas de sus decisiones me ponía de los nervios, justo de eso va su historia, de ver cómo toda esa idea que tenía del amor se le va rompiendo en mil pedazos, y ese desarrollo, gente, está muy, muy bien logrado.

And now, people, let's talk about Jacks. Look, let's be honest: Jacks is THE reason why so many people either dive into this book or drop it halfway through. If you've read Caraval, you already know him and probably have a very strong opinion about him, for better or for worse. It's just that with this guy... you either love him or hate him, there's no in-between. Here, Jacks is this immortal, super mischievous, and completely untrustworthy being who makes a deal with Evangeline: he'll stop the wedding, but in exchange, she owes him three kisses... and mind you, kisses he will claim when, how, and with whomever he pleases. His intentions are a total mystery. The guy is super grumpy, a bit possessive, and the tension between him and Evangeline... it's the driving force of the whole thing! You never know if he's helping her, using her, or both at the same time, and that doubt, people, that doubt is what makes it brilliant. Another thing I absolutely loved was the pacing. This book is not slow at all, people!

I mean, it's about 400 pages, which isn't short, but it just flies by because you really can't put it down. It's pure entertainment, full of mystery, and with plot twists that will have you on the edge of your seat the entire time. You never know who to trust: not Jacks, not the other nobles, not even Evangeline's blessed stepsister! The plot takes turns that, honestly, you never see coming! And there's one plot twist in particular that introduces a super classic fantasy element that I totally wasn't expecting... it was literally like when you were a kid and found the toy in the cereal box, you know? That same surprise. It brought a huge smile to my face and added a whole new level of fun to everything that was just great.

Y ahora, gente, hablemos de Jax. A ver, seamos honestos: Jax es LA razón por la que muchísima gente o se avienta a leer este libro o, de plano, le deja a la mitad, si ya leyeron Caraval, ustedes ya lo conocen y seguro tienen una opinión súper fuerte sobre él, para bien o para mal.. es que este tipo… o lo amas o lo odias, no hay de otra. Aquí, Jax es este ser inmortal, súper travieso, para nada de fiar, que le hace un trato a Evangeline: él detiene la boda, pero a cambio, ella le debe tres besos.. ojo, eh, besos que él va a cobrar cuándo, cómo y con quién se le dé la gana, sus intenciones son un misterio total, el tipo es súper gruñón, medio posesivo, esa tensión que hay entre él y Evangeline... es el motor de todo! Nunca sabes si la está ayudando, si la está usando, o las dos cosas al mismo tiempo, y esa duda, gente, esa duda es lo que lo hace genial.. otra cosa que me encantó, de verdad, fue el ritmo. ¡Este libro no es nada lento, gente!

O sea, tiene como 400 páginas, que no es poco, pero se te va volando, porque de verdad no lo puedes soltar.. es puro entretenimiento, lleno de misterio y con unos giros en la trama que te dejan con el Jesús en la boca todo el tiempo.. nunca sabes en quién confiar: ni en Jax, ni en los otros nobles, ¡ni siquiera en la bendita hermanastra de Evangeline! La trama da unas vueltas que de verdad, ¡ni te las esperas! Y hay un plot twist en particular que mete un elemento de fantasía súper clásico que yo, para nada, me esperaba.. fue, literal, como cuando de niño te encontrabas el juguetito en la caja de cereal, ¿saben? Esa misma sorpresa, me sacó una sonrisota y le sumó un nivel de diversión a todo que fue genial.

But well, as much as I loved the journey, it wasn't all sunshine and roses. My main complaint is that, at times, the book felt more juvenile than I expected. I mean, Evangeline is 17 and faces life-or-death situations, but her thoughts and some of her decisions felt like they belonged to a younger girl, you know what I mean? And that threw me off a little. Also, although the tension with Jacks is brutal!, I would have liked a bit more of that romantic drama, that angst. In Caraval, the chemistry was a slow burn, but here it felt like a lot of sparks that never quite started the fire they could have been.

And also, some of Evangeline's problems were resolved a bit too easily, which took away from the impact of the danger. THAT ENDING! People, the ending! Be warned, this book ends on one of those monumental cliffhangers that leaves you with a million questions in your head. It basically turns everything upside down and leaves you needing the next book RIGHT NOW. It's one of those endings that frustrates you in the moment, but you know it's a masterstroke to make you come back for more. So, who is this book for? Look, if you loved Caraval, you obviously have to read it, but go in knowing it's a fairy tale, not another carnival. I do think reading Caraval first helps you enjoy Jacks much more, but if you don't want to, you can technically read it as a standalone.

If you're into pretty, magical fantasy, romances with mysterious guys, and fast-paced plots full of twists... this book is 100% for you. For me, it was a solid 4/5 stars. I knocked off one star for that slightly immature vibe and because I wanted more drama in the romance, but phew, the world it creates, the gripping plot, and the dynamic between Evangeline and Jacks more than make up for it. It's a fun, magical, and super charming read that completely won me over. And well, that's it for today's review! Take care! Bye-bye!

Pero bueno, por más que me fascinó el viaje, no todo fue miel sobre hojuelas, mi queja principal es que, a ratos, el libro se me hizo más juvenil de lo que yo esperaba.. o sea, Evangeline tiene 17 años y se enfrenta a problemas de vida o muerte, pero sus pensamientos y algunas de sus decisiones se sentían como de una chica más chica, ¿me explico? Y eso como que me sacó un poquito de onda, además, aunque la tensión con Jax es ¡brutal!, sí me hubiera gustado un poquito más de ese drama romántico, de ese sufrimiento.. en Caraval la química era a fuego leeento, pero aquí sentí que eran puras chispitas que no acababan de prender el incendio que podrían haber sido.

Y también, algunos problemas de Evangeline se resolvían como que muy fácil, y eso le quitaba impacto al peligro.. ESE FINAL! ¡Gente, el final! Ojo, este libro termina con un cliffhanger de esos monumentales, que te deja con un millón de preguntas en la cabeza, básicamente, pone todo patas para arriba y te deja necesitando el siguiente libro PERO YA. Es de esos finales que te frustran en el momento, pero que sabes que es una jugada maestra para que vuelvas por más.. entonces, ¿para quién es este libro? A ver, si te encantó Caraval, obvio tienes que leerlo, pero ve con la idea de que es un cuento de hadas, no otro carnaval.. sí creo que leer Caraval primero te ayuda a disfrutar mucho más a Jax, pero si no quieres, técnicamente lo puedes leer solito..

Si a ti te late la fantasía mágica y bonita, los romances con tipos misteriosos y las tramas que van a mil por hora llenas de giros… este libro es 100% para ti. Para mí, fue un sólido 4/5 estrellas.. le bajé una estrella por esa vibra un poco inmadura y porque me faltó más drama en el romance, pero ¡uf!, el mundo que crea, la trama que te atrapa y la dinámica entre Evangeline y Jax lo compensan con creces, es una lectura divertida, mágica y súper encantadora que a mí me compró por completo.. y bueno, hasta aquí la reseña de hoy!
