I'll talk to you about "The Housemaid" by Freida McFadden. I knew this was going to be different. Do you know that feeling when a book draws you in and you know it's going to be intense? Literally, that happened to me with this book. It came out in 2018 and many people know it. Since it came out, it's been a boom. People love it. I picked it up because I heard so many people rave about its wonders. I have to tell you that it did deliver what it promised, although it wasn't perfect, mind you... my first impression was like... total intrigue, but also a little bit of distrust, you know? The protagonist is a girl who is desperate for work and gets a job that seems too good to be true... as soon as she enters the house, which seems normal, you already feel that something strange is going on.

There’s a weird vibe from the start, and while it’s not the most shocking “WHAT?!” I’ve seen in other thrillers, it still leaves you thinking, it makes your hair stand on end. The idea of ​​such a vulnerable person entering a world full of secrets is heartbreaking but also emotional, and it sets up the story in a way that makes it impossible to put down. One of the things I enjoyed most about the book was Freida McFadden’s writing style. The story flows super easily thanks to her use of short chapters, perfect for those nights when you can’t stop reading. I found myself reading chapter after chapter without stopping because each one ends with a mini cliffhanger that leaves you wanting more. The prose is simple but it draws you in. It’s like she uses simple language, but that makes the darker, more complex parts of the story stand out more. At times I felt like her writing was almost like a conversation, as if the author were right there next to me.

Hola a todos fanáticos de las buenas historias, queridos amigos de Hive Book Club, en esta ocasión les quiero compartir una nueva reseña, les daré mis opiniones de este interesante libro, les hablaré de "The housemaid" de Freida McFadden, yo sabía que esto iba a ser distinto. ¿Ubican esa sensación cuando un libro te trae y sabes que será intenso? Literal, eso me pasó con este libro, salió como en el 2018 y muchas personas lo conocen.. Desde que salió ha sido un boom, la gente lo ama yo lo agarré porque escuché a muchísima gente hablar maravillas, tengo que decirles que sí cumplió con lo que prometía, aunque no fue perfecto, ojo ahí.. mi primera impresión fue como.. intriga total, pero también un poquito de desconfianza, ¿saben? La protagonista es una chica que está desesperada por trabajar y agarra un trabajo que parece demasiado bueno para ser verdad.. apenas entra a la casa, que en apariencia es normal, ya sientes que algo raro está pasando.

Hay una vibra rara desde el principio, y aunque no es el "¡¿QUÉ?!" más impactante que he visto en otros thrillers, igual te deja pensando, te pone los pelos de punta.. la idea de una persona tan vulnerable metiéndose en un mundo lleno de secretos es como que te parte el corazón pero a la vez te emociona, y eso prepara la historia de una manera que imposible dejar de leer.. una de las cosas que más disfruté del libro fue la forma de escribir de Freida McFadden. La historia fluye súper fácil gracias a que usa capítulos cortos, perfectos para esas noches en las que no puedes parar de leer, me encontré leyendo capítulo tras capítulo sin parar, porque cada uno termina con un mini cliffhanger que te deja con todas las ganas de seguir, la prosa es sencilla, pero te atrapa, es como que usa un lenguaje simple, pero eso hace que las partes más oscuras y complejas de la historia se destaquen más. A veces sentía que su forma de escribir era casi como una conversación, como si la autora estuviera ahí al lado mío.

I must say that the way the story is put together is really cool. The book is divided into three parts and is told from the perspective of two different characters. Having the story told from two different points of view gives the drama a fresh twist and helps you better understand why each character does what they do. It’s like a cool twist on the typical way of telling stories and it really helps to keep you there, with your heart in your throat the whole time! But, to be fair, I understand that some people might not like this change of perspective that much, especially if you prefer the story to be told by just one person. And speaking of characters, well, the three main characters are really well-developed, with such strong personalities that they seem like real people.

Each one gives a different flavor to the story: from the protagonist, who is cunning, but desperate, to the owner of the house, who is a total mystery, and another character that appears and whose story is revealed in a way that you can't even imagine, some may say that sometimes the characters are very similar to each other, but for me, I felt that they were different enough that the story was interesting and you never knew what was going to happen, the themes that this book touches on are as deep as the story itself.

At its core, it is a thriller that shows you what families are like on the inside and all the secrets they hide, it gets into what people are willing to do to fit into a family that may not be as perfect as it seems, and how the darkest secrets are hidden beneath the everydayness of life. How McFadden handles these themes is brilliant because he does it in a subtle way but it captivates you, giving you clues about the tensions that lie beneath, with just the right amount of suspense and emotion. It doesn't explain everything in great detail, but it leaves you thinking and gives you room to use your imagination and complete the puzzle.

Debo decir que es muy genial la manera en que está armada la historia.. el libro está dividido en tres partes y te lo cuentan desde la perspectiva de dos personajes distintos, eso de que te cuenten la historia desde dos puntos de vista diferentes le da un toque fresco al drama y te ayuda a entender mejor por qué cada personaje hace lo que hace.. es como un giro chévere a la forma típica de contar historias, y de verdad que ayuda a que estés ahí, con el corazón en la garganta todo el tiempo! Pero, a ver, siendo justos, entiendo que a algunas personas quizás no les guste tanto este cambio de perspectiva, sobre todo si prefieren que la historia la cuente una sola persona.. y hablando de personajes, bueno, los tres personajes principales están súper bien armados, con personalidades tan marcadas que parecen personas de verdad.

Cada uno le da un sabor diferente a la historia: desde la protagonista, que es astuta, pero está desesperada, hasta la dueña de la casa, que es un misterio total, y otro personaje que aparece por ahí y cuya historia se va revelando de una forma que ni te imaginas, algunos pueden decir que a veces los personajes se parecen mucho entre sí, pero para mí, sentí que eran lo suficientemente diferentes como para que la historia fuera interesante y nunca supieras qué iba a pasar, los temas que toca este libro son tan profundos como la historia en sí..

En el fondo, es un thriller que te muestra cómo son las familias por dentro y todos los secretos que esconden, se mete en lo que la gente es capaz de hacer para encajar en una familia que quizás no es tan perfecta como parece, y cómo los secretos más oscuros se esconden debajo de la cotidianidad de la vida diaria.. cómo McFadden maneja estos temas es genial porque lo hace de forma sutil pero te cautiva, te va dando pistas de las tensiones que hay debajo, justo con la cantidad necesaria de suspenso y emoción. No te explica todo con lujo de detalles, sino que te deja pensando y te da espacio para que uses tu imaginación y completes el rompecabezas.

There were tons of moments that kept me glued, the short chapters are addictive, the plot twists are super well placed and the fact that the story is told from two sides gives it a unique touch, I liked the way the narrator switches, it's like seeing the coin from both sides, you know what I mean? That not only makes the story richer, but it also leaves you wondering "and what is the truth here?" And another thing, the three-part structure of the book gives it a kind of rhythm and balance that you sometimes don't see in other thrillers... but be careful, not everything is perfect... although I liked the pace in general, I felt that some parts, especially at the beginning, seemed to drag a little.

There were parts where the story took its time getting going, and I thought, "Did I miss something? Where's that plot twist everyone's talking about?" Also, while the characters are quite well-developed, some of the decisions they make feel a bit forced, as if the author wanted to force them into the typical thriller mold instead of letting them evolve more naturally. Who will like this book most? If you love domestic thrillers with a good twist, stories full of secrets, and seeing things from different points of view, or if you're someone who falls in love with a book with short, gripping chapters, you're sure to have a good time. It's ideal for those looking for a story that will captivate you, one that blends suspense with family drama.

In the end, although "The Housemaid" didn't blow my mind like some of the other thrillers I've read lately, its strong points – like its gripping writing style, the way the plot is constructed, and the well-crafted characters – make it worth reading. It's a story that grips and entertains you, leaving you wanting to keep reading. I give it a 4.5/5; it's a book that, despite having its not-so-great moments, keeps you glued from beginning to end. If you like thrillers that mix the ordinary with the extraordinary, give it a chance. And well, that's all for today. Hubo un montón de momentos que me tuvieron pegadísimo, los capítulos cortitos son una adicción, los giros de la trama están súper bien puestos y que te cuenten la historia desde dos lados le da un toque único, a mí me gustó lo de que cambie el narrador, es como ver la moneda por los dos lados, ¿me entienden? Eso no solo hace la historia más rica, sino que te deja pensando "¿y cuál es la verdad aquí?". Y otra cosa, la estructura en tres partes del libro le da como un ritmo y un balance que a veces no se ve en otros thrillers.. pero ojo, no todo es perfecto.. aunque el ritmo en general me gustó, sentí que algunas partes, sobre todo al principio, como que se alargaban un poquito.

Hubo partes donde la historia se tomaba su tiempo para arrancar y yo pensaba "¿será que me perdí de algo? ¿dónde está ese enganche que todos dicen?".. además, aunque los personajes están bastante bien hechos, algunas de las decisiones que toman se sienten un poco forzadas, como si la autora los hubiera querido meter a la fuerza en el molde típico del thriller, en vez de dejarlos que evolucionen más natural. ¿A quién le va a gustar más este libro? Si te encantan los thrillers domésticos con un buen giro, las historias llenas de secretos y ver la historia desde diferentes puntos de vista, o si eres de los que caen rendidos ante un libro con capítulos cortitos que te enganchan, seguramente pasarás un buen rato.. es ideal para los que buscan una historia que te atrape, que mezcle el suspenso con el drama familiar.

Al final, aunque "The housemaid" no me voló la cabeza como otros thrillers que he leído últimamente, sus puntos fuertes – como su forma de escribir que te atrapa, cómo está armada la trama y los personajes que están bien hechos – hacen que valga la pena leerlo.. es una historia que te atrapa y te entretiene, te deja con ganas de seguir leyendo.. le doy un 4.5/5, es un libro que, aunque tiene sus momentos no tan buenos, te mantiene ahí pegado de principio a fin.
