Hello everyone, reading fanatics, dear friends of Hive Book Club, I hope you are all doing great today. This time I want to share a new review. When I read this book I felt hopeful but also had a bad feeling. Today I will talk to you about "The Pearl" by Steinbeck. He has a way of writing that catches you, it's almost magical... it immerses you in the lives of Kino, Juana and their baby, Coyotito, their simple but happy life in a fishing village in La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico—which, mind you, has historically been a pearl zone—it's beautiful and painful at the same time... I was there, supporting their dreams, but also afraid that something bad was going to happen and ruin their lives.

The story starts off well, Kino, a humble fisherman, suddenly finds a giant pearl that seems like it's going to change his life for the better... at first, it seems like a miracle, the solution to all his poverty problems... but, just before you get your hopes up, Steinbeck shows you the dark side of the coin... Finding that pearl doesn't just mean silver; it also brings a storm of problems, it kicks the family's happiness in the butt and starts a chain of events full of mistrust, greed and violence... Steinbeck's style is great because it's direct, but at the same time it makes you imagine everything, he doesn't beat around the bush when describing things, but his way of writing has something poetic, he paints clear images of the bright sea and also of the darkness that exists in people's ambition. The story's rhythm is super natural, it takes you little by little until the tension tightens your chest and you feel the weight of each decision that Kino makes, it is one of those stories that keeps you glued, page after page, and you realize that sometimes hope comes with a very high price.

Hola a todos, fanáticos de la lectura, queridos amigos de Hive Book Club, espero que estén genial en el día de hoy, en esta ocasión quiero compartir una nueva reseña, cuando leí este libro sentí esperanza, pero a la vez como un mal presentimiento, hoy les hablaré de "La Perla", de Steinbeck, y es que tiene una forma de escribir que te atrapa, es casi mágico.. te mete de cabeza en la vida de Kino, Juana y su bebé, Coyotito, su vida sencilla, pero feliz, en un pueblito de pescadores en La Paz, Baja California Sur, México—que, ojo, históricamente es zona de perlas—es linda y dolorosa al mismo tiempo.. yo estaba ahí, apoyando sus sueños, pero también con el miedo de que algo malo iba a pasar y les iba a arruinar la vida.

La historia empieza de buena manera, Kino, un pescador humilde, de repente encuentra una perla gigante que parece que les va a cambiar la vida para mejor.. al principio, parece un milagro, la solución a todos sus problemas de pobreza.. pero, que apenas te ilusionas, Steinbeck te muestra el lado oscuro de la moneda.. Encontrar esa perla no solo significa plata; también trae una tormenta de problemas, le da una patada a la felicidad de la familia y empieza una cadena de eventos llenos de desconfianza, avaricia y violencia.. el estilo de Steinbeck es genial porque es directo, pero a la vez te hace imaginar todo, no se anda con rodeos para describir las cosas, pero su forma de escribir tiene algo como poético, te pinta imágenes claritas del mar brillante y también de la oscuridad que hay en la ambición de la gente. El ritmo de la historia es súper natural, te lleva de a poquito hasta que la tensión te aprieta el pecho y sientes el peso de cada decisión que toma Kino, es de esas historias que te tienen pegado, página tras página, y te das cuenta de que a veces la esperanza viene con un precio muy alto.

One thing that blew my mind is how Steinbeck creates the characters, and that's even though the novel is short, Kino is a guy who dreams big, a father who sees the pearl as the way to give his son an education and a better future for his family, but that determination gets out of hand and becomes an obsession, showing us the darkest side of ambition. On the other hand, Juana is the one who puts her feet on the ground, the voice of reason. From the beginning, she doesn't trust that the pearl is such a good idea and warns Kino of the problems it can bring. And it's not just a mother's instinct, she sees clearly how something that seems like a blessing can very quickly turn into a curse.

And then there's the doctor, a tremendous character, he represents classism and pure greed... his role in the story gives you chills, he's not the doctor you'd expect, but a villain who only thinks of himself, his attitude reflects a harsh reality: even if someone like Kino is lucky enough to suddenly become rich, those who have the power and money almost always get it at the expense of others, leaving the most screwed up trapped in the same old wheel, and speaking of screwed people, the novel does a brutal job of showing the social and economic barriers. Because even though Kino seems to have finally won the lottery with the pearl, you quickly realize that changing the economic situation doesn't erase the prejudices or barriers that society puts up... the same people who before looked down on them, now want to use them and take advantage of them, what a cruel irony! Money doesn't always buy you acceptance or free you from inequality, it's that simple.

Una cosa que me voló la cabeza es cómo Steinbeck crea los personajes, y eso que la novela es cortita, Kino es un tipo que sueña en grande, un padre que ve la perla como la forma de darle estudio a su hijo y un futuro mejor a su familia, pero esa determinación se le va de las manos y se convierte en obsesión, mostrándonos el lado más oscuro de la ambición.. en cambio, Juana es la que pone los pies en la tierra, la voz de la razón.. desde el principio, ella no se fía de que la perla sea tan buena idea y le dvierte a Kino de los problemas que puede traer.. y no es solo cosa de instinto de madre, ella ve clarito cómo algo que parece una bendición se puede convertir rapidísimo en una maldición.

Y luego está el doctor, tremendo personaje, él representa el clasismo y la avaricia pura y dura.. su papel en la historia te da escalofríos, no es el doctor que esperarías, sino un villano que solo piensa en sí mismo, su actitud refleja una realidad cruda: aunque alguien como Kino tenga la suerte de hacerse rico de repente, los que tienen el poder y la plata casi siempre lo consiguen a costa de los demás, dejando a los más jodidos atrapados en la misma rueda de siempre, y hablando de gente jodida, la novela hace un trabajo brutal al mostrar las barreras sociales y económicas. Porque aunque Kino parece que por fin se ganó la lotería con la perla, rápido te das cuenta de que cambiar la situación económica no borra los prejuicios ni las barreras que pone la sociedad.. la misma gente que antes los miraba por encima del hombro, ahora los quiere usar y aprovecharse de ellos, ¡qué ironía más cruel! El dinero no siempre te compra la aceptación o te libra de la desigualdad, así de simple.

The Pearl gives you hope, yes, but it also stabs you in the soul, it made me think a lot about how expensive it is to be ambitious and everything that one leaves aside in order to want more... the novel touched my heart, it makes you reflect on how good and bad we human beings are, but I felt that some parts were a bit weak, they lacked a little more depth... the characters, although you remember them, sometimes seem more like ideas than people of flesh and blood, perhaps because the book is short, but it is precisely that of being concise that makes it so brutal, it gives you heavy ideas in a touch. If you like stories that criticize society, where hope crashes with the harshest reality and narratives that touch your soul without needing to be eternal, this novel will resonate a lot with you. It's not an easy read, I warn you, it's painful and it stirs things up inside you, but that's exactly why it's totally worth it, I give it a good rating of 4.7/5.

It's a classic tale that incredibly captures that struggle between what we dream of and the harsh reality of life... it reminds you that sometimes, looking for a better future can cost you the present and that fighting against injustice is something that happens to all of us, although it's also super personal... despite being short, this book leaves an indelible mark, it makes you talk about ambition, family and what's up with being human. La Perla te da esperanza, sí, pero también te clava un puñal en el alma, me dejó pensando full en qué tan caro sale ser ambicioso y todo lo que uno deja de lado por querer más.. la novela me llegó al corazón, te pone a reflexionar sobre lo buenos y malos que somos los seres humanos, pero sentí que algunas partes como que quedaron medio flojas, les faltó un poquito más de profundidad... los personajes, aunque te acuerdas de ellos, a veces parecen más ideas que personas de carne y hueso, tal vez porque el libro es cortito, pero que justo eso de ser conciso es lo que la hace tan brutal, te suelta ideas pesadas en un toque. Si te gustan las historias que critican la sociedad, donde la esperanza se estrella con la realidad más dura y las narrativas que te llegan al alma sin necesidad de ser eternas, esta novela te va a resonar un montón. No es una lectura fácil, te lo advierto, es dolorosa y te remueve cosas por dentro, pero justo por eso es que vale la pena totalmente, le doy de calificación un buen 4.7/5.

Es un cuento clásico que capta increíblemente bien esa lucha entre lo que soñamos y la realidad cruda de la vida.. te recuerda que a veces, buscar un futuro mejor te puede costar el presente y que pelear contra las injusticias es algo que nos pasa a todos, aunque también es súper personal.. a pesar de ser breve, este libro deja una marca imborrable, te pone a conversar sobre la ambición, la familia y qué onda con ser humano. Así que si te atreves a mezclarte con esperanza, desesperación y verdades que pegan duro, dale una oportunidad.. y esto es todo por hoy, cuidense, nos veremos en las proximas reseñas!
