I'll be honest, I picked up this book thinking I had it all figured out... the cover is pretty, the synopsis screams romantic comedy... I was ready for something light, just to pass the time, but let me tell you, this took a 180-degree turn to a place I never saw coming, and honestly, I loved the journey. It all starts with our protagonist, Clara... picture the typical super smart, mega-organized girl from a wealthy East Coast family, who one day packs her bags and moves from Manhattan to Los Angeles. The reason? A man, of course! She's had a platonic crush on her childhood friend, Everett, for 14 years and finally decides to move in with him, hoping he'll finally see her as something more... but what happens?

Literally, the moment she steps into the new apartment, he drops the bombshell: his band is going on tour and he's leaving... right away. To top it all off, he's already rented his room to a stranger he found online. So there you have it: Clara, with her Ph.D. and her life planned down to the second, is stranded in a new city with some guy named Josh she knows nothing about. That's when I thought, "Okay, I know how this goes: the forced proximity cliché, they fall in love, the end." Ha! I couldn't have been more wrong. The story completely subverts your expectations because this isn't just a book about two people falling in love, not at all!

This dives headfirst into the world of adult film. It turns out Josh isn't just some random guy; he's a pretty well-known porn star. When Clara, with her academic mind and business acumen, starts giving him "advice" on his work, they end up creating their own website. An ethical, educational, and super sex-positive site called "Shameless." Look, this part of the plot was a surprise; it gave the story a depth and substance you don't expect from a typical romance. It wasn't just about them getting together; it was about them building something truly worthwhile that challenged an entire industry.

Hola a todos, amigos fanáticos de las buenas lecturas, espero que estén super bien, en esta ocasión les quiero compartir una nueva opinión, les hablaré de la novela: The Roommate de Rosie Danan.. les soy sincero, yo agarré este libro pensando que ya me la sabía toda.. a portada es bonita, la sinopsis grita comedia romántica... yo ya estaba listo para algo ligero, para pasar el rato, pero, déjenme decirles que esto dio un giro de 180 grados a un lugar que yo ni me esperaba, y la verdad, me encantó el viaje. La cosa empieza con nuestra prota, Clara.. imagínense a la típica chica súper lista, mega organizada, de familia con plata de la Costa Este, que un día agarra sus maletas y se manda a mudar de Manhattan a Los Ángeles. ¿La razón? Un hombre, ¡pues claro! Lleva 14 años en plan amor platónico con su amigo de la infancia, Everett, y por fin se anima a irse a vivir con él, con la esperanza de que el tipo por fin la vea como algo más.. pero qué pasa?

Literal, pisa el nuevo depa y él le suelta la bomba: su banda se va de gira y él se va... ya mismo, para rematarla, ya le alquiló su cuarto a un desconocido que encontró por internet.. así que ahí la tienen: Clara, con su doctorado y su vida planeada al segundo, queda botada en una ciudad nueva con un tal Josh que no tiene ni idea de quién es, ahí fue que pensé: "Ok, ya sé cómo va esto: el cliché de que los obligan a vivir juntos, se enamoran, fin". ¡Ja! No podría haber estado más equivocado.. la historia le da una vuelta de tuerca a todas tus expectativas, porque este no es solo un libro de dos personas que se enamoran, ¡qué va!

Esto se mete de cabeza en el mundo del cine para adultos.. resulta que Josh no es un tipo cualquiera; es una estrella bastante conocida del porno.. cuando Clara, con su mente de académica y su visión para los negocios, empieza a darle como "consejos" sobre su trabajo, terminan creando su propia página web. Una página ética, educativa y con una onda súper positiva sobre el sexo llamada "Shameless".. miren, esta parte de la trama fue una sorpresa, le dio a la historia una profundidad y una carnita que no te esperas de un romance típico.. no se trataba solo de que ellos dos estuvieran juntos, se trataba de que construyeran algo que de verdad valía la pena y que desafiaba a toda una industria.

And now, folks, let's talk about the characters, because they are truly the heart and soul of this book. Clara is brilliant. She's a very strange but incredible mix of, on one hand, being a worldly girl from a wealthy family with a ton of degrees, and on the other, having a surprising innocence about her own sexuality and desires. Her evolution is one of the best parts of the book. Watching her go from this reserved, somewhat shy girl who lives for others' expectations to becoming a confident, independent woman who knows what she wants and goes for it without asking for permission was perfect. Then there's Josh—his stage name is "Josh, Darling," which I find hilarious—and he has a very weird phobia of ketchup.

At first glance, he seems like the typical playboy, the stud, but deep down he's a total sweetheart, super sweet with solid values, so much so that he refuses to do certain scenes his production company, Black Hat, demands. Mind you, there's a moment at the beginning where he kind of treats her like a "charity case" after they have an encounter, and I swear you'll want to strangle him, but he more than makes up for it with such thoughtful, heartfelt lines. The author really managed to make you fall for a character who could easily have been unlikable. And can we talk about the spice level? Because, wow! I'm warning you right now, this is not a book to read on the bus or the subway. It's very, very explicit and adult, no holds barred. But what makes it so good is how the tension is built. For most of the book, it's all about those "almost-but-not-quite" moments, the smoldering glances, the conversations crackling with sparks. The author is a master at that, so when things finally happen... it feels earned, and it's boom! Explosive.

Y ahora, gente, hablemos de los personajes, porque de verdad, son el alma de este libro, Clara es una genia.. es una mezcla súper rara pero increíble de, por un lado, ser una chica de mundo, de familia con plata, con un montón de títulos, y por otro, tener una inocencia que te sorprende sobre su propia sexualidad y lo que quiere.. su evolución es de lo mejor que tiene el libro. Ver cómo pasa de ser esa chica toda reservada, medio tímida, que vive para lo que los demás esperan, a convertirse en una mujer segura, independiente, que sabe lo que quiere y va por ello sin pedirle permiso a nadie fue perfecto.. luego está Josh, su nombre artístico es “Josh, Darling” —o sea, Josh, Cariño—, que me da demasiada risa, y tiene una fobia rarísima al kétchup.

A primera vista parece el típico playboy, el galán, pero por dentro es un pan de Dios, súper dulce y con unos valores bien puestos, tanto que se niega a hacer ciertas escenas que su productora, Black Hat, le exige.. ojo, tiene un momento al principio donde la trata a ella medio como un “caso de caridad” después de que tienen un encuentro, y te juro que te dan ganas de ahorcarlo, pero lo compensa con creces con unas frases tan consideradas, tan sentidas.. de verdad que la autora se la ingenió haciendo que te enamores de un personaje que, fácil, podría caerte pésimo. ¿Y podemos hablar del nivel de picante? Porque, ¡wow! Se los advierto desde ya, este no es un libro para leer en el bus o en el metro.. es muy, muy explícito y para adultos, sin pelos en la lengua, pero lo que lo hace tan bueno es cómo se construye la tensión.. durante casi todo el libro, todo se trata de esos momentos de "casi pero no", de las miraditas que matan, de las conversaciones cargadas de chispas.. la autora es una maestra en eso, así que cuando las cosas por fin pasan... se siente como algo que te ganaste, y es ¡pum!, explosivo.

But hey, the book isn't perfect. What frustrated me the most, and this is something that happens a lot in romance novels, is the dreaded lack of communication. There are moments when you, as the reader, know exactly what Clara and Josh are thinking, and you just want to jump into the book, grab them by the shoulders, and scream at them to please talk to each other! It's a trope that sometimes works, but here I felt they dragged it out too long, and almost all the drama stemmed from it. My other issue was the ending. After building everything up so well, I felt it was wrapped up very hastily. There's a time jump that leaves you with several questions, with important things unresolved, especially the issue of how they make things right with their families. I was so invested in the story that I wanted more; I felt like I was given a delicious little taste when I was already waiting for the whole cake.

So, who is this book for? Well, if you're looking for a romance that's more than the typical love story, with an original plot set in a real industry and with incredibly well-developed characters, this is for you. If you love spice, drama, and that slow-burn tension that finally explodes, go get it! Now, if what you want is a super light, sweet, and non-explicit romantic comedy, or if the miscommunication trope flat-out drives you crazy, you might want to skip this one. Overall, I give The Roommate 3.8/5 stars. The character development is phenomenal, the plot is fresh and daring, and the chemistry is spectacular. I'm docking points for those frustrating "just talk, for God's sake!" moments and an ending that felt too sudden for how hooked I was. Pero bueno, el libro no es perfecto, ¿eh? Lo que más me frustró, y es algo que pasa un montón en los libros de romance, es la bendita falta de comunicación.. hay momentos en los que tú, como lector, sabes perfecto lo que están pensando Clara y Josh, ¡y te dan unas ganas de meterte al libro, agarrarlos de los hombros y gritarles que por favor hablen entre ellos! Es un cliché que a veces funciona, pero aquí sentí que lo estiraron demasiado y casi todo el drama venía de ahí.. mi otro pero fue el final. Después de construir todo tan bien, sentí que lo cerraron muy a las apuradas, hay un salto en el tiempo que te deja con varias preguntas, con cosas importantes sin resolver, sobre todo el tema de cómo se arreglan con sus familias.. yo ya estaba tan metido en la historia que quería más; sentí que me dieron una probadita deliciosa cuando yo ya estaba esperando el pastel completo.. entonces, ¿para quién es este libro?

A ver, si buscas un romance que sea más que la típica historia de amor, con una trama original, metida en una industria de verdad y con personajes increíblemente bien construidos, este es para ti.. si te encanta el picante, el salseo, y esa tensión que se cocina a fuego lento y que al final explota, ¡corre a buscarlo! Ahora, si lo que quieres es una comedia romántica súper ligera, dulce y sin nada explícito, o si de plano el cliché de la falta de comunicación te saca de quicio, mejor déjalo pasar.. en general, a The Roommate yo le doy unas 3.8/5 estrellas, el desarrollo de los personajes es fenomenal, la trama es fresca y atrevida, y la química es espectacular, le quito por esos momentos frustrantes de "¡hablen, por Dios!" y un final que se sintió muy repentino para lo enganchado que ya me tenía.. aun así, es una lectura inteligente, sexy y que, sorpresivamente, te llega al corazón.. y bueno, hasta aquí la reseña de hoy, cuidense!
