Greetings to all literature lovers 📚.
Today I come to tell you about the first book I read by the King of Horror, Stephen King. This was my first approach to his work and from that moment on I became fond of reading his books. The one I present to you today is his second published book. Its name, The Mystery of Salem's Slot, a horror novel from the year 1975.
The first time I read the novel, because I confess I have read it on more than one occasion, when I had no idea who Stephen King was and how exciting the book would be, I found the beginning of the story a bit boring. When I read the synopsis, I was expecting excitement from page one. But, Stephen King doesn't rush us into the plot, and first gives us a detailed tour of where the story takes place and takes us to meet each of his characters. Which I appreciated later in the reading, because it's the best way to empathize with each of them, and to get to know them.
About the plot
The book tells the story of Ben Mears, a well-known writer who, after a traumatic event, returns to Salem's Slot, a small town where he spent some years of his childhood. A period that the writer remembers with great affection as they were the happiest years of his childhood.
When he arrives, Ben is surprised to discover that the old Marsten house is still standing. This mysterious large house, located on top of a hill that overlooks the view of the town, was the site where he had a terrifying experience that left a deep mark on him. Suddenly, that terror of the past returns once more, but are no longer the monsters that live in a child's imagination, now he must face his fears in the real world.
With Ben's arrival in the village, something sinister begins to happen and its inhabitants begin to disappear inexplicably. But that's not all, there's more, much more...
My appreciation of the book
The novel keeps us constantly in tension and expectant for what will happen next, with unexpected and surprising changes in its plot. I remember that I even got scared while reading it at night (what better time than the wee hours of the morning to immerse yourself in an excellent horror novel 😈🎃😱). Even after I finished the reading, the scenes I had just read were still etched in my mind.
Another aspect that appeals to me about this book is that it goes beyond simply narrating shocking scenes. Through his characters, the author offers us a reflection on different aspects of real life, with which we often feel identified, since many of the experiences of the characters could have been or could be our own experiences. For example, the emancipation of children and how this affects the relationship with parents, as well as how complex the relationship between mother and daughter can be, or the problems that an adolescent goes through. The innocence of first love or the value of friendship. And it also delves into the darker and tenebrous side of people, telling us stories about human sins, lies, infidelity, corruption and greed.
Final considerations
Stephen King's ability to maintain suspense through the whole read is impressive. Therefore, for those of you who haven't had the chance to read this novel, I recommend it to you, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. "The Mystery of Salem's Slot" is one of those books that grabs you from the beginning, you just can't close it and forget about it. It will always keep you thrilled, wanting to find out more, until you reach its final pages.

Hoy vengo a comentarles sobre el primer libro que leà del Rey del Terror, Stephen King. Este fue mi primer acercamiento a su obra y desde ese momento me aficioné a leer sus libros. Este que les presento hoy, es su segundo libro publicado. Su nombre, El misterio de Salem's Slot, una novela de terror del año 1975.
La primera vez que leà la novela, porque confieso que la he leÃdo en más de una ocasión, cuando ni siquiera tenÃa idea de quién era Stephen King y lo emocionante que serÃa el libro, el inicio de la historia me pareció un poco aburrida. Cuando leà la sinopsis, esperaba tener emoción desde la página uno. Pero, Stephen King no se apura en adentrarnos en la trama, y primero nos da un recorrido en detalle por el lugar donde se desarrolla la historia y nos lleva a conocer a cada uno de sus personajes. Cosa que agradecà más adelante en la lectura, porque es la mejor manera de empatizar con cada uno de ellos, y de llegar a conocerlos.
Acerca de la trama
El libro nos cuenta la historia de Ben Mears, un reconocido escritor que después de haber vivido un suceso bastante traumático, regresa a Salem's Slot un pequeño pueblo en donde vivió algunos años de su niñez. Una etapa que el escritor recuerda con mucho afecto ya que fueron los años más felices de su infancia.
Al llegar, Ben se sorprende al descubrir que la antigua casa de los Marsten aún se mantiene en pie. Esta misteriosa casona, ubicada en lo alto de una colina que domina la vista del pueblo fue en donde vivió una experiencia terrorÃfica que lo marcó profundamente. De pronto, ese terror del pasado regresa una vez más, pero ya no son los monstruos que viven en la imaginación de un niño, ahora debe enfrentar sus miedos en el mundo real.
Con la llegada de Ben al pueblo, algo siniestro comienza a suceder y sus habitantes empiezan a desaparecer de manera inexplicable. Pero eso no es todo, hay más, mucho más...
Mi apreciación sobre el libro
La novela nos mantiene constantemente en tensión y expectantes por lo que sucederá a continuación, con cambios inesperados y sorprendentes en su trama. Recuerdo que incluso llegué a asustarme mientras la leÃa por la noche (¡qué mejor momento que la madrugada para sumergirse en una excelente novela de terror! 😈🎃😱). Incluso después de terminar la lectura, las escenas que acababa de leer seguÃan grabadas en mi mente.
Otro aspecto que me atrae de este libro es que va más allá de simplemente narrar escenas impactantes. A través de sus personajes, el autor nos ofrece una reflexión sobre diferentes aspectos de la vida real, con los cuales muchas veces nos sentimos identificados, ya que muchas de las vivencias de los personajes podrÃan haber sido o ser nuestras propias vivencias. Como, por ejemplo, la emancipación de los hijos y como afecta esto la relación con los padres, asà como lo compleja que puede ser la relación madre e hija, o los problemas por los que pasa un adolescente. La inocencia del primer amor o el valor de la amistad. Y también se adentra en el lado más oscuro y tenebroso de las personas contándonos historias sobre los sobre pecados humanos, mentiras, infidelidades, corrupción y avaricia.
Consideraciones finales
La habilidad de Stephen King para mantener el suspenso a lo largo de toda la lectura es impresionante. Asà que, para los que no han tenido oportunidad de leer esta novela, se las recomiendo, seguro que la disfrutaran. "El misterio de Salem's Slot" es uno de esos libros que te atrapa desde el principio, simplemente no puedes cerrarlo y olvidarte de él. Siempre te mantendrá en vilo, deseando descubrir más, hasta llegar a sus páginas finales.
