(ESP/ENG) Orgullo y Prejuicio: Libro vs. Película

En esta ocasión quiero hablarles del libro y posterior película: Orgullo y Prejuicio.
Comparare el film en relación a la obra literaria de Jane Austen, y les contare sí le hace honor como adaptación cinematográfica, o si en su caso, es tan buena, que no hace falta leer el libro.
Intentaré en lo máximo posible no hacer spoilers para las personas que no han visto o leído esta novela. Sin más que decir, comencemos.

(Antes que nada debo aclarar que no soy una crítica de cine, ni mucho menos una experta de obras literarias, solo vengo a dar mi humilde y sincera opinión)

This time I want to talk to you about the book and subsequent movie: Pride and Prejudice.
I will compare the film in relation to the literary work of Jane Austen, and I will tell you if it does honor as a film adaptation, or if in your case, it is so good, that it is not necessary to read the book.
I will try as much as possible not to make spoilers for people who have not seen or read this novel. Without further ado, let's begin.

(First of all I must clarify that I am not a movie critic, much less an expert on literary works, I just come to give my humble and sincere opinion).

Soy fan de las películas de época. Este fanatismo me llevo a ser consciente muy temprano de la película: Orgullo y Prejuicio.

Sin embargo al conocer que tenía un libro, y saber un poco más sobre la mujer que lo escribió, me obsesiono la idea de leerlo primero… Lo cual sucedió después de muchos años después por cuestiones de “tiempo”.

Jane Austen es una escritora muy reconocida por todo lo que escribió en su época, convirtiéndola en autora de lo que se conoce hoy día como: Literatura clásica.

Por estas muchas razones hablaremos del susodicho libro (sin hacer spoilers)

I am a fan of period films. This fanaticism led me to be aware very early on of the movie: Pride and Prejudice.

However upon learning that it had a book, and knowing a little more about the woman who wrote it, I became obsessed with the idea of reading it first... Which happened after many years later due to "timing" issues.

Jane Austen is a very well known writer for everything she wrote in her time, making her an author of what is known today as: Classic Literature.
For these many reasons we will talk about the aforementioned book (without making spoilers).

Orgullo y Prejuicio es una novela del año 1813, romántica y algo cómica, ambientada en los Años 1810, 1800 y 1790. Esta novela fue publicada de manera anónima, y se presume que la joven Jane Austen la escribió cuando solo contaba con 20 añitos de edad.

Pride and Prejudice is an 1813 novel, romantic and somewhat comic, set in the years 1810, 1800 and 1790. This novel was published anonymously, and it is presumed that the young Jane Austen wrote it when she was only 20 years old.

Mi opinión/My opinion

Esta es una novela bastante corta y ligerita. Leerla no cuesta nada, y de hecho, a pesar de ser un clásico publicado bastante tiempo atrás, su narrativa cómica y sátira la hacen muy comprensible al lector. La aporta de un humor que a día de hoy, sigue vigente.

Además, creo que empatizar con la familia de nuestro personaje principal, y con ella misma, es muy fácil, ya que existen situaciones como, los lazos de hermandad, o las diferencias con la madre, que son comunes en la vida real de muchas personas.

El personaje protagonista, Elizabeth, tiene una personalidad sólida y casi incorrumpible, hasta que una serie de eventos (más o menos desafortunados) hace que dude de su propio juicio.
Por otro lado, existen personajes que realmente te hacen sacar de quicio, y son tan cercanos a nuestra protagonista, que irremediablemente no los puede evitar.

Pero toda la historia de las hermanas Bennet, empieza con una primicia. Una madre (un poco quizás loca) por casar a algunas de sus hijas con un hombre de clase.

Esto sería un acto de locura, visto por el señor Bennet, de no ser por la razón que atemoriza a su esposa. Todos en la familia, compuesta de hijas mujeres, conocen el destino que les depara al morir su padre… Ninguna de ellas podrá heredar su riqueza o la propiedad en la que viven, por lo que se verán improvista de un hogar y a su propia suerte.

This is a fairly short and light novel. It costs nothing to read, and in fact, despite being a classic published quite some time ago, its comic narrative and satire make it very understandable to the reader. It brings a humor that is still relevant today.

In addition, I think that empathizing with the family of our main character, and with herself, is very easy, since there are situations such as the bonds of brotherhood, or the differences with the mother, which are common in the real life of many people.

The main character, Elizabeth, has a solid and almost incorruptible personality, until a series of events (more or less unfortunate) makes her doubt her own judgment.
On the other hand, there are characters that really get on your nerves, and they are so close to our protagonist, that she cannot avoid them.

But the whole story of the Bennet sisters begins with a scoop. A mother (a bit perhaps crazy) for marrying off some of her daughters to a man of class.

This would be an act of madness, as seen by Mr. Bennet, were it not for the reason that frightens his wife. Everyone in the family, composed of female daughters, knows the fate that awaits them upon their father's death... None of them will be able to inherit his wealth or the property on which they live, so they will be left without a home and to their own devices.

Orgullo y Prejuicio (2005)/Pride and Prejudice (2005)

En esta ocasión hablaremos de la adaptación de 2005, ya que sí, efectivamente, Orgullo y Prejuicio no solo tiene una adaptación, sino varias. Una película en blanco y Negro, una serie, y la última y más reciente adaptación de 2005, protagonizada por Keira Knightley ( como Elizabeth Bennet) Matthew Macfadyen (Fitzwilliam Darcy).

Mi primer punto va dirigido hacia la elección de estos dos actores como protagonistas.

Debo admitir que yo imaginé todo el tiempo a Elizabeth como Keira, porque, aunque no había visto la película, si el póster, así que fue inevitable. Sin embargo intentaré que esto no nuble mi juicio.
La verdad es que Keira me encanta como protagonista, porque creo que no solo su físico, sino sus gestos y la manera de personificar a Elizabeth van justo a su medida. Elizabeth es una joven guapa, pero sin embargo, que no brilla por eso, sino que su astucia e ingenio la hacen sobresalir de entre las jóvenes de su misma edad.

Teniendo una hermana mayor realmente bella y en quien caen la mayoría de halagos, por su temple dulce (casi ingenuo) y su rostro angelical.

Elizabeth es quien con respuestas sarcásticas e ingeniosas, defiende su carácter y dignidad. Regalando momentos graciosos, pero en dónde demuestra su sólida personalidad. Algo que Keira lleva muy bien a la pantalla, es la mirada coqueta y de ojos brillantes, que es descrita en Elizabeth en el libro.

Respecto a Sr Darcy, puesto que es un personaje bastante reservado al principio, y de quién no se tiene señales de sus sentimientos o pensamientos internos, incluso en el libro, la frialdad e indiferencia son sus mayores características, al menos en la primera mitad de la novela y película. Lo cual personifica bastante bien el actor de este papel, aunque a diferencia de Keira, la apariencia física de este, muy en lo personal, me parece se ve un poco mayor para la edad que realmente tiene Darcy… Fuera de esto, creo que dentro de la película quizás se ven reflejados, en menor medida, los pensamientos de Elizabeth respecto al personaje de Darcy durante la primera mitad del film. Algo que en el libro se vive más vivamente.

Respecto a los personajes secundarios no tengo ninguna queja, creo que cada uno de ellos transmiten la misma vibra que en el libro, sobre todo y grandiosamente, la Sra Bennet, madre de Elizabeth, y su hermana menor, Lydia.

This time we will talk about the 2005 adaptation, because yes, indeed, Pride and Prejudice has not only one adaptation, but several. A Black and White movie, a series, and the latest and most recent 2005 adaptation, starring Keira Knightley (as Elizabeth Bennet) Matthew Macfadyen (Fitzwilliam Darcy).

My first point is directed towards the choice of these two actors as leads.

I must admit that I imagined Elizabeth as Keira all the time, because, although I had not seen the movie, I had seen the poster, so it was inevitable. However I will try not to let this cloud my judgment.
The truth is that I love Keira as the main character, because I think that not only her physique, but her gestures and the way she personifies Elizabeth are just right for her. Elizabeth is a pretty young girl, but nevertheless, that does not shine for that, but her cunning and wit make her stand out from the young girls of her own age.

Having an older sister who is truly beautiful and on whom most compliments fall, for her sweet temper (almost naive) and her angelic face.

Elizabeth is the one who with sarcastic and witty answers, defends her character and dignity. Giving away funny moments, but where she shows her solid personality. Something that Keira brings very well to the screen, is the flirtatious and bright-eyed look, which is described in Elizabeth in the book.

Regarding Mr. Darcy, since he is a rather reserved character at the beginning, and of whom there is no sign of his inner feelings or thoughts, even in the book, coldness and indifference are his main characteristics, at least in the first half of the novel and movie. Which personifies quite well the actor of this role, although unlike Keira, the physical appearance of this, very personally, I think he looks a little older for the age that actually has Darcy... Apart from this, I think that within the film perhaps are reflected, to a lesser extent, Elizabeth's thoughts about Darcy's character during the first half of the film. Something that is more vividly experienced in the book.

Regarding the supporting characters I have no complaints, I think each of them convey the same vibe as in the book, especially and grandly, Mrs. Bennet, Elizabeth's mother, and her younger sister, Lydia.

Ahora bien, la dirección de arte juega un papel fundamental para que una película de época, se sienta como si de verdad estuviéramos viendo una historia de aquellos tiempos.

Tomando en cuenta que los vestidos de aquella época eran: así, así y así, el vestuario no está nada mal. Pero tan importante como eso, son los lugares donde se desenvuelven nuestros personajes: que van desde la vida campestre adyacente a Londres, Netherfield, Longbourn, hasta Rosings Park, Pemberley.

A mi en lo particular, todos los escenarios en lo que fueron retratados estos lugares, me fascinaron. De la mano de un buen vestuario, una música acorde, y una dirección de fotografía que favorecía todo lo anterior, creo que encontré bastante agradable la estética de la película, por así decirlo.

Now, the art direction plays a fundamental role in making a period film feel as if we were really watching a story of those times.

Considering that the costumes of that time were: like this, like that and like that, the costumes are not bad at all. But just as important are the locations where our characters are set: from the country life adjacent to London, Netherfield, Longbourn, to Rosings Park, Pemberley.

For me in particular, all the scenarios in which these places were portrayed, fascinated me. Hand in hand with good costumes, music to match, and a cinematography direction that favored all of the above, I think I found the aesthetics of the film quite pleasing, so to speak.

Respecto a la historia ya en sí misma, al ser una novela –más o menos- corta, la película se apega bastante a la historia original sin hacer mayores recortes, o al menos no significativos.

Tanto es el parecido, que incluso, alguno de los diálogos son textualmente iguales que los escritos por Jane Austen. Aunque como dije, anteriormente, son poquísimas las cosas que se restan de la historia original a la llevada a la pantalla grande, si que hay algunas… O más bien una frase en particular, icónica de la película, que no existe en el libro.

¿Esto tiene gran importancia? No, solo se sintió como cuando leyendo Romeo y Julieta esperaba el famoso “Romeo Romeo, ¿Dónde estás, que no te veo?” y no apareció, porque Shakespeare nunca lo escribió.

Pero a todas estas ¿es necesario leer ‘Orgullo y Prejuicio’?

Regarding the story itself, being a novel -more or less- short, the film sticks pretty close to the original story without making major cuts, or at least not significant ones.

So much is the resemblance, that even some of the dialogues are textually the same as those written by Jane Austen. Although, as I said before, there are very few things that are subtracted from the original story to the one taken to the big screen, there are some... Or rather a particular phrase, iconic of the film, which does not exist in the book.

Does this matter a great deal? No, it just felt like when reading Romeo and Juliet I was waiting for the famous "Romeo Romeo, where art thou, that I see thee not?" and it didn't appear, because Shakespeare never wrote it.

But by all this is it necessary to read 'Pride and Prejudice'?

La verdad como lectora sin remedio, siempre, siempre, recomendaré leer el libro de alguna adaptación cinematográfica, porque por lo general la experiencia es mejor.

¿Mi condición de lectora está cegando mi juicio? Tal vez. Mi conclusión es que si leer el libro no te llama la atención demasiado, en realidad la película puede serte adaptación bastante buena, no perfecta, no igual o mejor que el libro, pero si buena. Si leer en general no te gusta tanto, ve la peli, no te estas perdiendo de nada.

Pero si leer te gusta, y leer romances de época, más. Te recomiendo encarecidamente que lo hagas, porque las emociones que se resumen en 2h 7m de película, no igualan en viveza a las aprox 400 palabras escritas por Jane.

Yo, por mi parte disfrute muchísimo ambas cosas. Y espero que ustedes también lo hagan.

The truth as a hopeless reader, I will always, always, always recommend reading the book of some film adaptation, because usually the experience is better.

Is my being a reader blinding my judgment? Maybe. My conclusion is that if reading the book doesn't hold your attention too much, the movie can actually be a pretty good adaptation, not perfect, not equal to or better than the book, but good. If reading in general doesn't appeal to you that much, watch the movie, you're not missing anything.

But if you like reading, and reading period romances, even more. I highly recommend you do, because the emotions that are summarized in 2h 7m of movie, do not equal in vividness to the approx 400 words written by Jane.

I, for one, thoroughly enjoyed both. And I hope you do too.
