Hello, dear book-loving friends. As always, it is a real pleasure for me to share a new post with this wonderful community. Today I’m bringing you another book, Who Moved My Cheese?, which encourages us to reflect on how to deal with change in the workplace and in our daily lives.
Who Moved My Cheese?, written by Spencer Johnson, M.D., is a book that teaches us how to adapt to change in a world so turbulent that it presents us with many different paths at once, many of which are dead ends that we must learn to recognise. It is a fable about two little mice and two little men who lived in a maze. They depended on cheese for food and happiness. They were very happy because they found a room full of cheese. They grew accustomed to living with the security of having all that cheese, until one day it disappeared.
The author shows us that the cheese is a goal we wish to achieve and the maze is life itself, with all its contradictions. He points out that life is full of changes and that everything depends on how we face the challenges presented to us when the cheese is moved time and time again.
We always strive for success, whether in our professional lives. We want a stable job with the right promotions and pay rises. Meanwhile, in our personal lives, we long for a deeply romantic relationship. We dream of getting married and having children. We yearn for the money to buy a house and a car. Or, conversely, we long for a life of peace, spirituality and freedom.
In this sense, the author makes us reflect on the idea of achieving what we so long for; we get used to it, but what would happen if we lost it? Or what would happen if the rules changed and we were taken out of our comfort zone to get what we want? Who has taken my cheese? Who has taken away my routine and my comfort zone?
This fable makes us reflect on how unpredictable life is, which means we must not become too attached to the way things are done. We must be flexible in how we view change, accept it and, above all, understand it.
There is no doubt that old beliefs hold us back and limit us. However, new experiences and new beliefs inspire us to adopt new behaviours and choose new paths. When we decide to free ourselves from old behaviours, we also free ourselves from the fear we have of moving forward onto new paths. When we leave fear behind, everything becomes revitalising, refreshing and liberating.
All this leads us to believe that accepting change, however difficult, allows us to see the path clearly and to realise that, in time, we will see it as a blessing.
I hope you enjoyed the book I shared with you today, ‘Who Moved My Cheese?’. I look forward to seeing you soon with a new post.
