I know, it’s not Monday anymore but I have been waiting for this short review to have its time.
Reading this particular book was quite a roller coaster journey. It is the book of the infamous sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein with ties to billionaries and influential people in the world. His suicide case shocked the world while he was on trial for sex trafficking. Personally, it is unfair to me that he didn’t go into a long trial for horrible things he had done. Epstein himself denied the suicidal thoughts which made his suicide subject to conspiracy theories and speculations. For that reason alone, I picked up the book last year but only got the chance to read it this week.
I was appalled and disgusted.
Filthy Rich : The Billionaire’s Sex Scandal
The book was written by a team of reputable authors consisting of James Patterson, John Connolly, and Tim Malloy. It recounts the tale of a mysterious billionaire named Jeffrey Epstein. The book itself was published back in 2016, 5 years before Epstein suicide. It traces back to the crime that Epstein committed to his life and the people around him including Ghislaine Maxwell, who was once having a close relationship with Epstein. She is now sentenced 20 years for sex trafficiking case . Inside Filthy Rich, we can find the actual crime that they both committed and the glamor lifestyle that Epstein had.
The beginning of the book, we were presented with a gut-wrenching interview of the victims. They were all still minors that got tangled with a predator. The victims did it because of the promise of money that they would receive after performing “massage” but it was more than that. Eventually, we will found out that the victim was more than one, it was even organized, much like a referral system with the promise of, “making extra money by doing favors to a very rich guy”
How come it took years before their case was brought to public?
An excerpt from the book may give a simplest explanation to it,
“ Michael Reiter was a good cop. A good man. But he was about to discover that when it came to men with power and influence Esptein wielded, fairness under the law was relative, malleable concept “ (Patterson et al,. 156).
In the book, Epstein was described as someone who came from a humble background. He himself was considered as brilliant and generous. He didn’t have any college degree yet he succeeded in creating wealth through his various consulting endeavors and his banking experience. His brilliance drove him far to even befriend famous people including Prince Andrew. With his wealth, he managed to buy a gulfstream and an island in the U.S. Virgin islands called Little Saint James. All of these can also be found inside the book including photographs of him with his influential friends including a few of the victims and his girlfriends.
Today, although Epstein died, this book provides a more detailed overview of what happened, who was involved and why it mattered. It is also still relevant to read especially when the book also taught us that when it comes to powerful people, everything is almost limitless.
