THE HOBBIT

“What is my favorite book?” … what a great question. It is so personal and introspective. I have always defined the concept of reading as a transformative and dynamic process of self-definition. Your favorite book tells a lot about yourself and your personality. And, even though books have always been a tangible part of my life and my life-long companions, I must say that the best of all are those that make you dream and propel you into adventures. But do not take this the wrong way; I love a great passive narrative, including the extravaganzas of the great Jay Gatsby; the abstract thoughts of Holden Cauldfield; and the embodiment of the totalitarian and Orwellian “Big Brother” of “1984”. However, without a single doubt, my favorite book is quite a fantasy… the greatest adventure you could ever imagine… that is right: it is “The Hobbit”.

"¿Cuál es mi libro favorito?" ... qué gran pregunta. Es tan personal e introspectiva. Siempre he definido el concepto de lectura como un proceso transformador y dinámico de autodefinición. Tu libro favorito dice mucho de ti mismo y de tu personalidad. Y, aunque los libros siempre han sido una parte tangible de mi vida y mis compañeros de toda la vida, debo decir que los mejores de todos son los que te hacen soñar y te impulsan a vivir aventuras. Pero no se lo tomen a mal; me encanta una gran narrativa pasiva, incluyendo las extravagancias del gran Jay Gatsby; los pensamientos abstractos de Holden Cauldfield; y la encarnación del totalitario y orwelliano "Gran Hermano" de "1984". Pero, sin lugar a dudas, mi libro favorito es toda una fantasía... la mayor aventura que se pueda imaginar... así es: es "El Hobbit".

J.R.R. Tolkien, in this magnificent work of art, transformed a children’s book into an adult Bible. It is a very simple plot: Bilbo Baggins, a Hobbit from The Shire, embarks himself in an adventure, along with the great wizard, Gandalf the Grey, and thirteen dwarfs, in order to recover a treasure that belonged to the latter, which was stolen by a vile dragon named Smaug. Once they got it, Smaug escaped the castle where he resided and, as a form of punishment to the dwarfs, burned an entire town, until, eventually, he was killed. It turned out that the treasure also belonged to four other civilizations, so a war took place between these five armies, ending in an equal repartition of said inheritance.

J.R.R. Tolkien, en esta magnífica obra de arte, transformó un libro infantil en una Biblia para adultos. El argumento es muy sencillo: Bilbo Bolsón, un hobbit de La Comarca, se embarca en una aventura, junto con el gran mago, Gandalf el Gris, y trece enanos, para recuperar un tesoro que pertenecía a estos últimos y que fue robado por un vil dragón llamado Smaug. Una vez que lo consiguieron, Smaug escapó del castillo donde residía y, como forma de castigo a los enanos, quemó un pueblo entero, hasta que, finalmente, lo mataron. Resultó que el tesoro también pertenecía a otras cuatro civilizaciones, por lo que tuvo lugar una guerra entre estos cinco ejércitos, que terminó con un reparto equitativo de dicha herencia.

This book spoke to me in so many levels. Ever since I was a little girl, I saw myself reflected in Bilbo, who was somewhat grumpy, isolated, and lived in his own little world. In fact, at first, he was hesitant of accompanying Gandalf and the crew. But with the passing of time, he grew up to be more of a leader and someone very happy with life. I too was a very shy and taciturn little girl. It was difficult for me to step out of my comfort zone. I was very dependent on my parents, brothers, and sisters, who were actually the opposite of me. I never saw myself as a leader nor as an adventurer. That is why Bilbo transmitted the energy that I needed to be represented. If he was capable of changing, so did I. He was an inspiration in so many levels. Thanks to him, I started being more confident within myself. I started going out more; exploring the world; partying more. I even did a stand up comedy course and, let me tell you, I nailed it. Who would have thought that I, a former timid girl, would stand in a scenario in front of a hundred strangers and actually make them laugh? It was a mind-blowing experience. Afterwards, I studied law and became a well-respected lawyer… I made my life by talking in front of people; I mean, Bilbo was my role model, and I will never have the chance to thank Tolkien for making me believe in myself.

Este libro me habló en muchos niveles. Desde pequeña, me veía reflejada en Bilbo, que era algo gruñón, aislado y vivía en su propio mundo. De hecho, al principio, dudaba de acompañar a Gandalf y a la tripulación. Pero con el paso del tiempo, se convirtió en un líder y en alguien muy feliz con la vida. Yo también era una niña muy tímida y taciturna. Me resultaba difícil salir de mi zona de confort. Era muy dependiente de mis padres, hermanos y hermanas, que en realidad eran todo lo contrario a mí. Nunca me vi como una líder ni como una aventurera. Por eso Bilbo me transmitió la energía que necesitaba para ser representado. Si él era capaz de cambiar, yo también. Fue una inspiración en muchos niveles. Gracias a él, empecé a tener más confianza en mí mismo. Empecé a salir más; a explorar el mundo; a salir más de fiesta. Incluso hice un curso de stand up comedy y, déjenme decirles, lo clavé. ¿Quién iba a pensar que yo, que antes era una chica tímida, me pondría en un escenario delante de cien desconocidos y les haría reír? Fue una experiencia alucinante. Después, estudié Derecho y me convertí en una respetada abogada... Hice mi vida hablando delante de la gente; es decir, Bilbo fue mi modelo, y nunca tendré la oportunidad de agradecer a Tolkien que me hiciera creer en mí misma.

What I love about this book, apart from the fact that it was the first time that we read about the famous ring that would later be the catalyzer of the magnificent “Lord of the Rings” saga, is that it amalgamized my fears and insecurities and turned them into a force of profuse strength. The world is made for adventurers. And that adventure does not necessarily mean to go hiking, or skydiving, or scuba diving, or fighting in the WWE. Not at all. It means that we need to get out of our comfort zone into the unknown, which will turn into our new comfort zone in the non-distant future. It would be a lie to say that it is an easy task. But the world is what we make of it. It is what Bilbo made of it. Tolkien’s legacy, apart from a series of books and movies that would explode the fan’s minds, is a clear lesson: the world is a difficult place to live in, but our insecurities are even more difficult to accept. It is up to you if you prefer to live with that burden or if you stand up, throw them in a garbage, and start living, each day at a time, stepping away from your comfort zone into that adventure called: “LIFE”. Believe me, thanks to Bilbo, I chose the latter, and that, my friends, has made all the difference.

Lo que me encanta de este libro, aparte de que fue la primera vez que leímos sobre el famoso anillo que luego sería el catalizador de la magnífica saga de "El Señor de los Anillos", es que amalgamó mis miedos e inseguridades y los convirtió en una fuerza profusa. El mundo está hecho para los aventureros. Y esa aventura no significa necesariamente ir de excursión, o hacer paracaidismo, o bucear, o luchar en la WWE. En absoluto. Significa que tenemos que salir de nuestra zona de confort hacia lo desconocido, que se convertirá en nuestra nueva zona de confort en un futuro no lejano. Sería una mentira decir que es una tarea fácil. Pero el mundo es lo que hacemos de él. Es lo que Bilbo hizo de él. El legado de Tolkien, aparte de una serie de libros y películas que harían estallar las mentes de los fans, es una clara lección: el mundo es un lugar difícil para vivir, pero nuestras inseguridades son aún más difíciles de aceptar. Depende de ti si prefieres vivir con esa carga o si te levantas, las tiras a la basura, y empiezas a vivir, cada día a la vez, alejándote de tu zona de confort hacia esa aventura llamada: "LA VIDA". Créanme, gracias a Bilbo, elegí lo segundo, y eso, amigos míos, ha marcado la diferencia.
