Goosebumps [Analysis of the books] ESP/ENG

Today I'd like to share a personal analysis of a book series I loved reading as a child. I remember my dad bringing me one of these books every week because he knew I enjoyed them so much. I'm referring to the Goosebumps series by R.L. Stine. These books were horror, and I think they sparked my love for the genre, though it was a light horror. I liked them because they were often short stories with a good beginning, middle, and end. They were almost always about teenagers starting a new life in a different place after their parents decided to move, and that was something I could relate to because I also had to move and change my environment. And in the end, these stories almost always had unexpected twists.

Hoy me gustaría hacer un análisis personal de una saga de libros que me gustaba leer en mi infancia, recuerdo que cada semana mi papá llegaba a casa con uno de estos libros para mi porque sabía que yo los disfrutaba mucho, me refiero a la saga Escalofríos por R.L. Stine. Estos libros eran de terror y creo que fueron los causantes de mi amor hacia este género, sin embargo era un terror ligero. Me gustaba porque a menudo eran historias cortas con un buen inicio, desarrollo y cierre, casi siempre se trataba de adolescentes que comenzaban una nueva vida en otro lugar luego de que sus padres decidieran mudarse, y eso era algo con lo que yo me identificaba porque también me tocó mudarme y cambiar de ambiente. Al final estas historias casi siempre tenían giros inesperados.

These books were carefully designed for children and young adults, employing a light and uncomplicated narrative style that made them very easy to read. Ghosts, monsters, and other supernatural elements, such as living dolls, often appeared (I remember this story terrified me, and I even started to look at my dolls with suspicion, but thankfully I soon forgot about it). The author had a wonderful ability to hook and capture the reader's attention, especially at the end of each chapter. You were always left wanting to know what happened to the characters, so you inevitably turned to the next one, and you could read for hours.

The author was even considered the Stephen King of children's and young adult horror literature, and now that I've had the chance to reread some of these books, I agree. His narrative is interesting, light, and captivating, but not too explicit. The scenes don't contain gore or actions that could offend sensibilities, so it can be considered a safe read, and even a gateway to attract more children and young adults to the literary world, encouraging them to create their own stories. Or at least it stimulated my imagination; I created thousands of stories in my mind, adapting them to my own environment and culture, haha 😄.
