Today it was time to review and analyze one of my favorite stories, The Musicians of Bremen, a story that undoubtedly, at least in my humble opinion, fills readers with hope and urges them to pursue their dreams until they achieve them.
Hoy tocó el turno de reseñar y analizar uno de mis cuentos favoritos, Los Músicos de Bremen, una historia que sin lugar a dudas, al menos en mi humilde opinión, llena de esperanza a los lectores y los insta a perseguir sus sueños hasta alcanzarlos.
Overview/Resumen
A donkey, a dog, a cat, and a rooster, all old and considered useless, flee their abusive owners with a clear goal: to reach the city of Bremen and become great musicians. They all travel separately, but along the way, they meet and decide to travel together. Each of them, of course, has a different personality and a special skill: the donkey, for example, is the group's rock-solid foundation, the one who provides the most confidence; the dog is very strong; the cat is incredibly agile; and the rooster has a marvelous voice. So, if they are very good individually, together they are invincible.
Un burro, un perro, un gato y un gallo que ya eran viejos y hasta considerados inútiles, huyen de sus respectivos dueños abusivos con un certero objetivo, ir a la ciudad de Bremen y convertirse en grandes músicos, todos viajan por su cuenta pero en el camino se van encontrando y deciden viajar juntos. Cada uno de ellos obviamente tiene una personalidad diferente y una habilidad especial: El burro por ejemplo es la base sólida del grupo, es quién aporta más confianza, el perro es muy fuerte, el gato es tremendamente ágil y el gallo tiene una voz maravillosa, así que si por su cuenta son muy buenos, juntos son invencibles.
Upon arriving in Bremen, they find a cabin where some thieves are planning a robbery. The animals spy through a window and decide to intervene by making a lot of noise, each according to its species: braying, meowing, barking, etc. So the thieves get scared and flee, leaving the cabin for the traveling animals, who take full advantage of it (eating and resting from their journey). Later, one of the thieves decides to return to investigate but is attacked by the animals, so everyone is convinced that the house is inhabited by supernatural beings.
Al llegar a Bremen encuentran una cabaña donde unos ladrones están planeando un robo, los animales espían por una ventana y deciden intervenir haciendo mucho ruido, cada uno el correspondiente a su especie; rebuznos, maullidos, ladridos, etc... así que los ladrones se asustan y huyen, dejando la cabaña para los animales viajeros, los cuales la aprovechan al máximo (comen y descansan del viaje) luego una de los ladrones decide regresar a investigar pero es atacado por los animales, así que todos están convencidos de que esa casa está habitada por seres sobrenaturales.
My Opinion/Mi Opinión
Clearly, the story aims to teach us many valuable lessons, but I believe one of the most important is unity and diversity. The animals didn't discriminate against each other; they didn't stop to think that some were smaller than others or had different tastes. Being such diverse species, they paid attention only to their own goals, and in fact, that's what united them: they all focused on their similarities rather than their differences. They all wanted to be musicians, and they had all been marginalized before. They knew that on their own they might not have achieved much, but their combined skills made the group invincible and successful. So, it can be said that the story promotes teamwork as a key element for achieving any success in life.
Claramente el cuento pretende darnos muchas lecciones valiosas, pero yo considero que una de las más importantes es la unión y la diversidad, los animales no se discriminaron entre sí, no se detuvieron a pensar que algunos eran más pequeños que otros o si tenían gustos diferentes, siendo especies tan diversas no prestaron atención más que a sus propios objetivos, y de hecho fue eso lo que los unió, que todos se enfocaron en sus similitudes más que en sus diferencias: todos querían ser músicos y todos habían sido marginados previamente. Sabían que por su cuenta tal vez no hubiesen logrado mucho, pero las habilidades de todos ellos combinadas hicieron que el grupo fuese invencible y exitoso, de modo que se puede decir que la historia promueve el trabajo en equipo como elemento clave para lograr cualquier éxito en la vida.
But another important point to highlight is old age and the way many stigmatize this natural part of life. For some, when someone reaches old age, they've reached the end of their productivity and are therefore considered useless. But our four protagonists weren't swayed by either the opinions or the mistreatment they suffered at the hands of their former owners. On the contrary, they saw their old age as the perfect opportunity to pursue their dreams and dedicate themselves to what truly fulfilled them. Working for others only satisfied the whims and the wallets of their masters, but now it was time to forge their own path. They never lost hope, moving forward and leaving behind a lifetime of mistreatment and labor exploitation, without fear of failure or uncertainty.
Pero otro punto importante a resaltar es la vejez y la manera en que muchos estigmatizan este hecho natural de la vida. Para algunas personas cuando alguien llega a viejo llegó al final de su productividad y por lo tanto lo consideran inútil, pero nuestros cuatro protagonistas no se dejaron llevar ni por la opinión ni por el maltrato de sus antiguos dueños, al contrario, vieron en su vejez la oportunidad perfecta para seguir sus sueños y dedicarse a lo que de verdad les llenaba el alma, trabajar para otros solo satisfacía la voluntad y el bolsillo de sus amos, pero ahora llegó el momento de seguir sus propios pasos, ellos no perdieron la esperanza en ningún momento, salieron adelante dejando atrás toda una vida de maltratos y explotación laboral, sin miedo al fracaso y a la incertidumbre.
The fact that it's a fable makes it very appealing to children, much easier to understand and analyze, and it perfectly illustrates the theme of diversity. But as I said, if we analyze it more closely, we'll discover that the story has much more depth. I even think it could be seen as a subtle critique of exploitation and the obsession with productivity and the competition to be more prosperous—standards imposed by society that steal the best years of our lives and make us believe that if you don't fulfill your established role, then you're a failure in the eyes of society. Even the fact of being a musician is very relevant to the story because music is art, and art has always been stigmatized and underestimated in some way. Who hasn't heard the famous phrase, "If you become a musician, you'll starve"? Nobody believes in the success of a musician or an artist in general until they see them shine. Then, of course, friends and support pour in.
El hecho de que sea una fábula lo hace muy atractivo para los niños, mucho más fácil de entender y analizar, además de que ayuda perfectamente a ilustrar el tema de la diversidad, pero tal como les dije, si lo analizamos con más detenimiento descubriremos que la historia tiene mucha más profundidad, incluso pienso que también podría tomarse como una sutil critica a la explotación y la obsesión con la productividad y la competencia por ser más prósperos, cánones impuestos por la sociedad pero que nos roba los mejores años de nuestra vida, y nos hacen creer que si no cumples ya con tu rol establecido, entonces eres un fracaso para la sociedad, incluso el hecho de ser músico tiene mucha relevancia en la historia, porque la música es arte y el arte siempre ha sido de alguna manera estigmatizado y subestimado, ¿Quién no ha escuchado la famosa frase "Si te vuelves músico te morirás de hambre"? nadie apuesta por el éxito de un músico o de un artista en general hasta que lo ve brillar, allí sí, llueven los amigos y el apoyo.
And yes, as I told you, it's one of my favorite stories because despite being one of the shortest in the Grimm Brothers' repertoire, it has some of the most beautiful and profound stories, making you philosophize about existentialism, so I highly recommend it for all ages.
Y sí, tal como les dije, es una de mis historias favoritas porque a pesar de ser uno de los más cortos que tienen los hermanos Grimm en su repertorio, es uno con las historias más bonitas y profundas, que te hacen filosofar acerca del existencialismo, así que la recomiendo mucho para todas las edades.
