For this occasion, from the Grimm brothers' repertoire, I bring to review and analyze The Donkey's Cabbage, also known by other names such as The Discontented Donkey, one of the longest stories I have read, and like the others, it is full of symbolism and valuable reflections for life.
Para esta ocasión del repertorio de los hermanos Grimm traigo para reseñar y analizar La Col del Asno, también conocido con otros nombres como Col de Burro o El Asno Descontento, uno de los cuentos más largos que he leído, al igual que los otros está lleno de simbolismos y reflexiones valiosas para la vida.
Overview/Resumen
Once upon a time, a young hunter encountered an old beggar woman and helped her. In return, she gave him directions that would lead him to a valuable reward. She told him to keep walking until he reached a tree where some birds were fighting over a cloak. He was to shoot them, take the cloak that fell to the ground, and then take a dead bird, remove its heart, and swallow it whole. By doing this every morning, he would find a gold coin under his pillow, and the cloak would guide him wherever he wished. The hunter was happy, but a time came when he wanted to explore the world. And so, after traveling with his fortune and his cloak, he arrived at a castle where he asked for lodging. But there lived an evil old witch with her granddaughter and a servant. The witch knew how the hunter had obtained his fortune, so she devised a plan: her daughter would trick the hunter into drinking a potion that would make him vomit up the bird's heart.
En una ocasión un joven cazador se encontró con una anciana limosnera y la ayudó, ella a cambio le dio unas indicaciones que lo conducirían a una valiosa recompensa, le dijo que debía seguir caminando hasta llegar a un árbol en el cuál estarían algunos pájaros disputándose una capa, él debía dispararles, tomar la capa que cayera al suelo y posteriormente tomar un ave muerta, sacarle el corazón y tragarlo entero, al hacer esto todas las mañanas encontraría una moneda de oro bajo su almohada y la capa lo conduciría a donde quisiera. El cazador estaba feliz pero llegó un momento en el que quiso explorar el mundo, y de esta manera, de tanto viajar con su fortuna y su capa, llegó a un castillo en el que pidió posada, pero allí vivían una anciana bruja malvada junto con su nieta y una criada. La bruja sabía de qué forma el cazador había obtenido su fortuna, entonces urdió un plan que su hija engañara al cazador y lo hiciera beber una pócima que lo haría vomitar el corazón de pájaro.
In this way, the girl swallowed the bird's heart and received a coin each morning to give to her witch mother. But the witch also wanted the cloak, so she threatened her daughter to trick the hunter again. This time, she told him she wanted to travel to a faraway place. He put the cloak over them both and took her where she wanted to go. But when he fell asleep, she put on the cloak, ran away, and abandoned him. However, he found something wonderful: some magic cabbages. He ate a couple of leaves from one of the cabbages and turned into a donkey. However, after eating some leaves from another cabbage, he turned back into a human. So he put on a disguise to pass himself off as a peasant and avoid being recognized by the old woman and her daughter. In this way, he managed to deceive them by saying that these were exquisite cabbages, special for the king. So they both ate them, as did the maid, and they were all transformed into donkeys.
De esta manera la muchacha fue quien tragó el corazón de pájaro y obtenía una moneda cada mañana para dársela a su madre bruja, pero la bruja quiso también la capa, de modo que amenazó a su hija para que ella lograra engañar de nuevo al cazador, en esta ocasión le dijo que quería viajar hasta un lugar lejano, de esta manera él puso la capa sobre ambos y la llevó a donde ella quería, pero cuando él se quedó dormido, ella se puso la capa, huyó y lo dejó abandonado, pero él encontró algo grandioso: unas coles mágicas, comió un par de hojas de una de las coles y se convirtió en burro, sin embargo luego de comer algunas hojas de otra de las coles quedó convertido en humano nuevamente, así que se puso un disfraz para hacerse pasar por campesino y evitar que la anciana y su hija lo reconocieran, de esta manera logró engañarlas diciendo que aquellas eran coles exquisita y especiales para el rey, así que ambas comieron, la criada también y quedaron convertidas en asnas.
To complete his revenge, he took them to a miller and told him that the old donkey should receive only one meal a day and three lashes, the youngest (the servant) three meals a day and one lash, while the youngest (the witch's daughter) should receive three meals and no lashes at all. Later, when he returned to check on the animals, the miller told him that the old donkey had died and the other two were so sad they wouldn't last much longer. The hunter felt sorry for them and took them back home, fed them good cabbage to help them regain their human form, and then married the witch's daughter, who begged his forgiveness and said she was sorry. In this way, they recovered their cloak and prosperity.
Para completar su venganza él las llevó con un molinero y le dijo que a la burra vieja debía darle solo una comida al día y tres azotes, a la más joven (la sierva) debía darle tres comidas al día y un solo azote, mientras que a la más joven (la hija de la bruja) debía darle tres comidas y ningún azote. Más tarde cuando regresó a tener noticias de los animales, el molinero le dijo que la burra anciana había muerto y las otras dos estaban tan tristes que no aguantarían mucho tiempo, así que el cazador sintió pena y las llevó de nuevo a casa, les dio de comer coles buenas para recuperar su forma humana, luego se casó con la hija de la bruja que le pidió perdón y le dijo estar arrepentida, y de esta manera recuperaron la capa y las prosperidad.
My Opinion/Mi Opinión
This is a story about betrayal, deceit, and greed, but it is also a story about redemption, forgiveness, and above all, love. Through its somewhat dark narrative (whippings, threats, eating a bird's heart), the Brothers Grimm, as always, intend to teach us about the consequences of our actions, whether good or bad: the hunter helped the old woman who begged him for alms, and she rewarded him with prosperity and a cloak that could take him anywhere. But prosperity almost always breeds envy, and envy can lead to horrible acts, like what the witch did: using the hunter's love for her daughter as bait to trap him, deceive him, and strip him of everything. This evil deed also had consequences (her own disastrous end). However, the witch's maid and daughter did not suffer the same fate because the hunter took pity on them, giving them a second chance. In other words, redemption also has its rewards.
Esta es una historia sobre traición, engaño y codicia, pero también es una historia sobre redención, perdón y sobre todo amor. A través de su narrativa un poco oscura (azotes, amenazas, ingerir el corazón de un ave), como siempre los hermanos Grimm pretenden aleccionarnos acerca de las consecuencias de los actos, bien sea buenos o malos: el cazador ayudó a la anciana que le pidió una limosna y ella lo recompensó con prosperidad y una capa que lo podía llevar a cualquier parte, pero casi siempre la prosperidad genera envidia y la envidia puede llevar a cometer actos horribles, como lo que hizo la bruja, usar el amor que el cazador sentía por su hija como un gancho para atraparlo, engañarlo y despojarlo de todo, pero esta mala acción también generó una consecuencia (su propio final desastroso) sin embargo la criada y la hija de la bruja no corrieron esa suerte porque el cazador tuvo piedad de ellas, les dio una segunda oportunidad, es decir, la redención también obtiene sus recompensas.
As in other stories, in this one the Brothers Grimm use transformation as an element of purification. For example, the maiden only managed to redeem herself and reflect on what she had done to the hunter when she experienced firsthand what it was like to be in a vulnerable state. As a donkey, she could not express her feelings, she could not enjoy the fortune obtained after the betrayal, she could not return home to her familiar and safe place. But even though she was not evil like her witch mother, she had to experience the punishment to truly value what she had lost. However, the punishment for the old witch was proportional to her wickedness, and in the end, it destroyed her.
Al igual que en otras historias, en esta los hermanos Grimm usan la transformación como un elemento de purificación, por ejemplo la doncella solo logró redimirse y pensar en lo que le había hecho al cazador cuando experimentó en carne propia estar en un condición de vulnerabilidad, como asno ella n podía expresar sus sentimientos, no podía disfrutar de la fortuna obtenida tras la traición, no podía regresar a su casa, a su lugar conocido y seguro, pero a pesar de que ella no era mala como su madre bruja debía experimentar el castigo para valorar realmente lo que había perdido, in embargo el castigo para la viaje bruja fue proporcional con su maldad, y al final terminó destruyéndola.
Although this could also illustrate what human beings are like in real life: they are never content with anything, nothing satisfies them, when they obtain wealth they want more, even when their needs are met they will always try to have more than others because this makes them feel superior, when true wealth is intangible, it cannot be seen because it is within us, it is our values, our learning, our experiences, our memories, our gratitude and especially, love, this is the most valuable feeling that unites us, and with unity we have the necessary strength to overcome any obstacle.
Aunque esto también podría ilustrar lo que es el ser humano en la vida real: nunca está conforme con nada, nada lo satisface, cuando obtiene riquezas quiere más, aún y cuando tiene sus necesidades cubiertas siempre pretenderá tener más que otros porque esto lo hace sentir superior, cuando la verdadera riqueza es intangible, no se puede ver porque está en nuestro interior, son nuestros valores, nuestros aprendizajes, als vivencias, los recuerdos, la gratitud y en especial, el amor, este es el sentimiento más valioso que nos une, y con la unión tenemos la fuerza necesaria para vencer cualquier obstáculo.
