Ever since I saw the movie a while ago, I wanted to read the book, the original story it's based on, because I seriously love fantasy stories, which is why I also love Harry Potter and Narnia, but the truth is that The Neverending Story pleasantly surprised me by finding so much depth in both its plot and each of the characters.
Desde que vi la película hace tiempo quise leer el libro, la historia original en la que está basada, ya que en serio amo con locura las historias de fantasía, por eso amo también Harry Potter y Narnia, pero la verdad es que La Historia sin fin me sorprendió gratamente al encontrar tantísima profundidad tanto en su trama como en cada uno de los personajes.
Overview/Resumen
Bastian Balthazar Bux is a lonely boy with a very bad relationship with his father. He is overweight and is constantly bullied by his classmates at school. Because of this, he finds refuge in books. In fact, one day he goes to a bookstore and steals a book that isn't for sale. It's called... guess what?... yes, exactly, The Neverending Story. As Bastian begins to read, he is fascinated by what he finds. It's about a kingdom called Fantasia that is slowly disintegrating due to the lack of dreams and hope among its people. This creates a void that everyone calls "The Nothing." The Empress is desperate and sends the warrior Atreyu to find help to prevent the total destruction of Fantasia. But as Bastian continues reading, his heart begins to beat faster, as he discovers that the "savior" Atreyu is looking for is none other than Bastian himself. He has an important mission: to give the Empress a new name.
Bastián Baltasar Bux es un niño solitario y tiene una muy mala relación con su padre, tiene sobrepeso y por causa de esto es molestado constantemente por sus compañeros de clases en la escuela, debido a esto él encuentra refugio en los libros, de hecho en una ocasión el va a una librería y roba un libro que no está a la venta, se llama ¿Adivinen cómo?... sí, exactamente, La Historia Sin Fin. Al comenzar a leer Bastian está fascinado con lo que encuentra, se trata de un reino llamado Fantasía que poco a poco se desintegra por causa de la falta de sueños y esperanzas de los humanos en su mundo, esto crea un vacío que todos llaman "La Nada" La Emperatriz está desesperada y por eso envía al guerrero Atreyu en busca de ayuda para evitar la destrucción total de Fantasía, pero a medida que Bastian avanza en la lectura, su corazón comienza a latir con más prisa, ya que descubre que ese "salvador" que Atreyu está buscando es el propio Bastian, él tendría una misión importante, darle un nuevo nombre a la Emperatriz.
In the second part of the book, Bastian arrives in Fantasia and, with the help of the AURYN (a medallion), rebuilds the nation with his wishes. However, each wish causes him to lose one of his memories in his own world, and this unfortunately makes him cold and arrogant, as he begins to lose his essence and identity. Atreyu helps him overcome his fears, so he discovers that his only desire is to love, and he is ready to return to his world and restore his strained relationship with his father, just as he rebuilt Fantasia.
En la segunda parte del libro Bastian llega a fantasía y con ayuda del AURYN (un medallón) reconstruye la nación con sus deseos, pero cada deseo le hace perder uno de sus recuerdos en su propio mundo y esto lamentablemente lo vuelve frío y arrogante, ya que comienza a perder su esencia e identidad. Atreyu lo ayuda a superar sus propios miedos, de modo que descubre que su único deseo es amar, y está listo para regresar a su mundo y restablecer la deteriorada relación con su padre, de la misma manera que reconstruyó Fantasía.
My Opinion/Mi Opinión
After reading this story, as is my custom, I began to delve deeper into it... What does nothingness mean? What does it represent? Why is it fueled by people's lack of desire? And then I understood that it's about human apathy. The disappointments and prejudices that every human being experiences in their life sour their character, gradually undermining any dreams and hopes they may have, leaving them empty. Do you understand? That's what nothingness is. Nothingness is a force that sweeps away and destroys everything in its path. This can make you apathetic, bitter, and even insensitive. And what do people whose dreams and illusions have been shattered often do (though not always)? They destroy the dreams and illusions of others (sometimes out of envy, and other times in an attempt to protect them from the pain of failure). And in this way, the situation becomes a loop that leads to an endless story.
Tras leer esta historia, como ya es costumbre en mi, comencé a profundizar en ella... ¿Qué significa la nada? ¿Qué representa? ¿Por qué la alimenta la falta de deseos de las personas? Y entonces comprendí que se trata de la apatía humana, las decepciones y los prejuicios que todo ser humano experimenta en su vida van agriando su carácter, poco a poco van socavando los sueños y esperanzas que pueda tener, dejándolo vacío ¿Comprenden? Eso es la nada, la nada es una fuerza que arrasa y destruye todo a su paso, esto puede volverte apático, agrio e incluso insensible, ¿Y qué hacen a menudo (no en todos los casos) las personas cuyos sueños e ilusiones han sido rotos? Destruir los de los demás (a veces por envidia y en otras circunstancias ene un intento por protegerlos del dolor del fracaso) y de esta manera esta situación se vuelve un bucle que deriva exactamente en una historia interminable.
Another important point to highlight in this wonderful work by Michael Ende is that fantasy is not an escape from reality, but a means through which you can better understand it. For example, when you read Narnia and find the parallels with Christianity, it helps you better understand this faith. Sometimes we recognize in certain characters behaviors that we probably adopt without realizing it, and this third-person perspective can help us understand ourselves better. Elves, fairies, and magic in general are representations of longings and dreams that exist in real life, perhaps in a hidden corner of our hearts, sometimes concealed and intimidated by "The Nothing." or sinking like Atreyu's horse.
Otra cosa importante a resaltar en esta maravillosa obra de Michael Ende es que la fantasía no es una evasión de la realidad, sino un medio a través del cuál puedes entenderla mejor, por ejemplo cuando lees Narnia y encuentras esos paralelismo que hay con respecto al cristianismo, te ayuda a comprender mejor esta fe, A veces reconocemos en ciertos en personajes conductas que probablemente adoptamos sin darnos cuenta, y esta mirada en tercera persona puede ayudar a que nos comprendamos mejor. Los duendes, hadas y la magia en general son representaciones de anhelos y sueños que existen en la vida real, quizá en un recóndito rincón de nuestros corazones, a veces escondidos y amedrentados por "La Nada" o hundiéndose como el caballo de Atreyu.
Bastian is in a learning process in which he better understands himself, finally accepts himself, leaves behind his insecurities and that constant need for attention and external recognition. Why? Because he recognizes that everything starts with himself.
Bastian se encuentra en un proceso de aprendizaje en el cuál él se comprende mejor a sí mismo, finalmente se acepta a si mismo, deja los complejos atrás y esa constante necesidad de atención y reconocimiento externo ¿Por qué? porque reconoce que todo empieza por el mismo.
