Happy and blessed day I hope you are well, you are shining, growing, innovating and full of good health together with yours today I will talk about a novel, a classic of those that you should not stop reading It is very interesting and controversial for its time. Madame Bovary is a novel written by Gustave Flaubert published serially in 1856 in the Revue de Paris, it was incredibly a huge scandal, The author and his publisher were prosecuted in 1857 for "outrage to public and religious morals and good customs." In that conservative time this novel was very frowned upon, to be honest the novel is not to my taste I caught almost halfway through the book, Its author, Flaubert began to write it in 1851, coinciding with the fall of the Second Republic and the establishment of the Second Empire by Napoleon III.
As incredible as this book may seem, Madame Bovary gave a name to a disease. Flaubert's character gave his name to a psychological pathology, bovarism, which consists of chronic dissatisfaction produced by the frustrating contrast between illusion and reality.
Flaubert based his story on real events, was inspired by the true story of Delphine Delamare, the second wife of a rural Normandy doctor, known to the writer's parents. Delphine committed suicide at the age of twenty-six, after accumulating debts and lovers, orphaning her six-year-old daughter. After reading it and knowing that this was real, it is a rather gray and sad story, it made me think how difficult that conservative and patriarchal time must have been for a woman.
<divclass=”text-justify”> In this book so different for the time, the author writes in a way that goes against the moral and literary rules of society, perhaps no one before had dared to write a book about a woman so rebellious and so little resigned to fate. As I mentioned today, there is the term "bovarism" to refer to that change in the prototype of the perfect society woman who only lived to care for her husband and children, which is always seen written in the novels of that time, full of crude romanticism.
Flaubert leaves us a different woman, sad and lonely despite being married, who acts according to the passion and need that her heart feels to move forward in search of her happiness, no matter what. neither her husband, nor her young daughter, going through the ideals established for women at that time. Shifting sharply with the paradigm in which most women were subjected.
The conventionalism, monotony, repression and boredom of a marriage fill Emma with impotence, rebelling against this meaningless life, she takes refuge in infidelity and adultery, full of false fantasies, With remorse for the betrayal and burdened with debts to appear in society, they end up in a tragedy, the victim, Charles her husband and their daughter Berthe. She decides to put an end to betrayal and hypocrisy in a very tragic, and dramatic way!
This book portrays a person's frustrated ambition and need to deny themselves and stop being who they are. A very real novel. There must even be many people to compare them to today. Each character structured in such a way that it does not need or lack anything. It is a realistic work that overflows in detail but at the same time tells the story with an impressive coldness. Personally, I could not connect with the characters, that need for approval, that constant feeling of misery, it was difficult for me to appreciate some details and the real conflict in the face of so much suffering.
