Estoy muy feliz de volver con la reseña de un libro, pues llevaba algún tiempo sin hacer ninguna. Además, mi felicidad se debe también a que el libro del cual estaré hablando en este post lo leí en la primera Lectura Conjunta en la que he participado.
El 22 de mayo comencé la lectura conjunta de este libro, la cual me enteré mediante la red social Instagram. Nunca había participado en una, así que estaba muy emocionada por ello. El domingo 05 de junio terminé la lectura y supe que debía hacer una reseña a este libro tan atrapante.

I'm very happy to be back with a book review, as I hadn't done one for some time. Moreover, my happiness is also due to the fact that the book I'll be talking about in this post I read it in the first Joint Reading I've participated in.
On May 22 I started the joint reading of this book, which I found out about through the social network Instagram. I had never participated in one before, so I was very excited about it. On Sunday, June 05 I finished the reading and I knew I had to review this catchy book.

Desde el capítulo uno se presenta el conflicto del detective: investigar la desaparición de los seis jóvenes en el bosque Black Wood. Lo que supone un reto para él, ya que se dedica a investigar homicidios. No desapariciones.
A partir de ese punto me enganché porque estaba la duda de que fuera más bien un homicidio. También me llamó la atención el tema en torno al bosque. Para la mayoría de los habitantes de los derredores al bosque está clara la fama que este tiene: desapariciones, asesinatos atroces y leyendas que parecen ser reales.
El tipo de narración fue interesante. Es dividido en dos perspectivas y tiempos diferentes: un capítulo va narrado en primera persona por Jeff, luego de la desaparición; y el siguiente se presenta con un narrador omnisciente, antes de la desaparición. Esa dinámica me gustó mucho.
Es la primera vez que leo una novela narrada así, pero considero que fue un acierto, porque se lograba diferenciar ambas voces de los narradores sin perderse el estilo narrativo. Además, esto le agregó algo importantísimo a la trama: contexto.
Gracias al narrador omnisciente y a la pluma ágil del autor se puede ir conociendo más sobre los seis jóvenes desaparecidos; sus ideas, temores y las decisiones que los llevaron por buen y mal camino, de esas que me hacían pensar: “si solo no hubieran hecho eso…”. De la mano de este narrador acompañamos a los seis jóvenes por sus travesías desde que llegan a Black Wood.
La trama de la novela en sí fue bastante movida. Constantemente se descubría algo nuevo; la tensión y el suspense eran geniales a través de cada capítulo, pues con frases simples, no tan elaboradas ni exageradas, se transmitían las emociones en cada escena.
La atención a los pequeños detalles por toda la trama, como migajas, fue lo más destacable para mí. Con pequeños avistamientos en los primeros capítulos se da como una alerta para lo que se avecina. Nada está ahí por solamente adornar; es como una especie de puzle que va engranando en la mente del lector.
From chapter one the detective's conflict is presented: to investigate the disappearance of the six young men in Black Wood Forest. This is a challenge for him, since he investigates homicides. Not disappearances.
From that point on I was hooked because there was doubt that it was more of a homicide. I was also struck by the theme around the forest. It is clear to most of the people around the forest that it is notorious for disappearances, heinous murders, and legends that seem to be real.
The type of narration was interesting. It is divided into two different perspectives and times: one chapter is narrated in first person by Jeff, after the disappearance; and the next is presented with an omniscient narrator, before the disappearance. I really liked this dynamic.
It is the first time I read a novel narrated in this way, but I think it was a success, because it was possible to differentiate both narrators' voices without losing the narrative style. Besides, this added something very important to the plot: context.
Thanks to the omniscient narrator and the author's agile pen, we learn more about the six missing youths; their ideas, fears and the decisions that led them in the right and wrong direction, the kind that made me think: "if only they hadn't done that...". From the hand of this narrator we accompany the six young people through their journeys from the moment they arrive in Black Wood.
The plot of the novel itself was quite eventful. Something new was constantly being discovered; the tension and suspense was great throughout each chapter, as simple sentences, not so elaborate or exaggerated, conveyed the emotions in each scene.
The attention to small details throughout the plot, like breadcrumbs, was the highlight for me. With little glimpses in the first few chapters it's given as a warning for what's to come. Nothing is there for merely embellishment; it's like a puzzle of sorts that meshes together in the reader's mind.
Jeff. El detective protagonista. Con respecto a este personaje tengo opiniones encontradas, porque en los primeros capítulos me enganchó, ya que era realmente sólido su pensamiento y actitud como detective. No es como esos exagerados en otras novelas en las que el detective no puede descansar hasta dar con la solución al caso. Este, por el contrario, aunque es muy bueno en su trabajo, no hace lo imposible desde el principio por resolver el misterio… y he ahí mi conflicto. Aunque sí hacía conclusiones muy acercadas a lo que pasaba y se dio cuenta de muchas cosas, igual todo ese potencial detectivesco que le veía en un principio quedó en nada al pasar de los capítulos.
Él fue una decepción.
Aunque en personalidad no me defraudó. Se notaba su perfeccionismo, también su pasivo/agresividad, ya sea característica en él o debido a la presión y la depresión que llevaba a cuestas.
Hannah. A ella la podría definir solo como una caja de sorpresas. Por fuera es un estereotipo de chica adolescente que se pinta en muchos libros juveniles: la chica insegura, atractiva, inteligente, de esas que son más de quedarse en casa; pero en realidad eso es como la punta del iceberg de un enorme trozo de matices que hacen de ese personaje algo muy interesante.
A lo largo de la lectura tuve emociones encontradas, porque si no la estaba odiando, podía perfectamente empatizar con ella.
Stacy. Con este personaje pasa algo parecido a Hannah, es un iceberg del que se logra ver al principio solo la punta.
Por encima ella es “la típica chica popular”: hermosa, medio princesita, en una relación con el chico popular con el cual parecen uno. Lo que me llamó la atención es que se nota que hay más allá de eso; ella es empática, sensible, sarcástica y ácida en ciertas ocasiones, pero también un poco insegura y muy conflictuada.
Nate. Como con los otros, este personaje al principio solo muestra su punta del iceberg, pero pronto (en serio, muy pronto) va dando señales de esos matices en su personalidad.
Este fue de mi personaje favorito gracias a su desarrollo minucioso. Eso me encantó. Sobre todo con Nate se nota cómo el autor no dejó escapar ni un detalle.
Jordan. Odiado por muchos, amado por… mi ._. Todos los personajes anteriores son algo odiados, pero este sin dudas lleva la batuta. Pero no es que yo lo ame, sino que por naturaleza soy empática y logré comprenderlo (un poco).
Jordan sufre de imbecilidad. Es el típico chico popular, arrogante, bully y probablemente con ego herido. Pero aunque en parte sí le tengo un poco de rabia al personaje, me fascinó cómo el autor lo desarrolló, puesto que todos los matices de su personalidad se vislumbraron en medio del caos. Da muestra de la inteligencia que posee, de cómo afronta las adversidades y de la euforia y enojo que lleva revuelto por dentro como adolescente.
Eso fue 10/10 para mí, porque considero que en los momentos de tensión es donde más difícil e importante es explotar al máximo los matices de la personalidad de cada personaje.
Kent y Trey. La razón por la que los coloco a ellos juntos es que de todos los personajes, con quienes menos conecté, fue con Kent y Trey.
Sí, se ahonda un poco en la vida de ellos, pero nada más. Quizá sean cosas mías, pero a ellos dos les faltó algo más de personalidad. Aunque a veces me hacían decir “awww…” con escenas de ellos. Eran tiernos realmente.
En general todos los personajes (principales, secundarios) tienen matices muy marcados, lo que hizo que los amara y odiara al mismo tiempo. Aunque eso me llevó a algunas pequeñas decepciones.
Lo que sí es que el autor logró complementar muy bien personajes, ambiente y trama.
Jeff. The main detective. I have mixed opinions about this character, because in the first chapters he hooked me, as his thinking and attitude as a detective was really solid. He is not like those exaggerated in other novels in which the detective cannot rest until he finds the solution to the case. This one, on the other hand, although he is very good at his job, doesn't go out of his way from the beginning to solve the mystery... and that's where I was conflicted. Although he did make conclusions very close to what was happening and he realized many things, all the detective potential that I saw in the beginning came to nothing as the chapters went by.
He was a disappointment.
Although in personality he didn't disappoint me. His perfectionism was noticeable, also his passive/aggressiveness, either characteristic of him or due to the pressure and depression he was carrying around.
Hannah. She could be defined only as a box of surprises. On the outside she is a stereotypical teenage girl that is painted in many young adult books: the insecure, attractive, smart, stay-at-home kind of girl; but in reality that's just the tip of the iceberg of a huge chunk of nuances that make this character very interesting.
Throughout the reading I had mixed emotions, because if I wasn't hating her, I could very well empathize with her.
Stacy. With this character something similar to Hannah happens, she is an iceberg of which you manage to see only the tip at the beginning.
On top of that she is "the typical popular girl": beautiful, half princess, in a relationship with the popular guy with whom they seem one. What struck me is that you can tell there's more to her than that; she's empathetic, sensitive, sarcastic and acidic at times, but also a bit insecure and very conflicted.
Nate. As with the others, this character at first only shows his tip of the iceberg, but soon (seriously, very soon) he's showing signs of those nuances in his personality.
This was one of my favorite characters because of his thorough development. I loved that. Especially with Nate you can tell how the author didn't miss a single detail.
Jordan. Hated by many, loved by...me ._. All of the previous characters are somewhat hated, but this one certainly carries the baton. But it's not that I love him, I'm just naturally empathetic and managed to understand him (a little).
Jordan suffers from imbecility. He's the typical popular, arrogant, bully and probably ego wounded kid. But while I do have a bit of anger towards the character, I was fascinated by how the author developed him, as all the nuances of his personality were glimpsed in the midst of the chaos. It shows the intelligence he possesses, how he deals with adversity and the euphoria and anger he carries around inside as a teenager.
That was 10/10 for me, because I consider that in moments of tension is where it is most difficult and important to exploit the nuances of each character's personality to the fullest.
Kent and Trey. The reason I place them together is that of all the characters, the ones I connected with the least were Kent and Trey.
Yes, it delves a bit into their lives, but nothing more. Maybe it's just me, but the two of them lacked a little more personality. Although sometimes they made me go "awwww..." with scenes of them. They were cute really.
Overall all the characters (main, secondary) have very distinct nuances, which made me love and hate them at the same time. Although that led me to some minor disappointments.
What it did is that the author managed to complement characters, setting and plot very well.
Esta probablemente sea la reseña más contradictoria que haya hecho hasta ahora. Esta lectura fue una balanza que no dejaba de subir y bajar.
Algo que me pasó fue que fui bastante perspicaz y ya para la mitad del libro sabía por dónde iba la cosa. Al principio eso me pareció un poco decepcionante, pero luego me alegró el que mis teorías se hiciesen realidad.
También, creo que debo resaltar el que el libro pertenece a una trilogía (por ahora, lo más seguro es que sea una saga), pero el orden de la historia no afecta. Por esta razón es que había pensado que algo con respecto a Jeff había quedado inconcluso, pero eso está en la precuela de Bosque Negro: Dónde Nunca Llueve, la cual fue publicada un año después.
En general es un libro bastante bueno. Me enganchó desde el primer momento. Se lee rápido y el suspense está muy bien integrado en toda la novela.
No me arrepiento de haber participado en esta lectura conjunta, pues descubrí un nuevo autor y una novela que me gustó bastante.
100% recomendada a los fans del suspenso y a quien busque una lectura corta, pero movida.

This is probably the most contradictory review I've done so far. This read was a scale that kept going up and down.
One thing that happened to me was that I was pretty perceptive and by the middle of the book I knew where it was going. At first I found that a little disappointing, but then I was glad to have my theories come true.
Also, I think I should point out that the book is part of a trilogy (for now, most likely a saga), but the order of the story doesn't affect it. This is why I had thought that something about Jeff was left unfinished, but that is in the prequel to Black Forest: Where It Never Rains, which was published a year later.
Overall it's a pretty good book. It hooked me from the first moment. It reads fast and the suspense is very well integrated throughout the novel.
I don't regret having participated in this joint reading, as I discovered a new author and a novel that I quite enjoyed.
100% recommended to suspense fans and anyone looking for a short, but moving read.
