When I think of the first true readings my daughter should have, those that leave a mark, I cannot help but imagine Sir Nigel in her hands. It is not the most famous novel by Arthur Conan Doyle, but for me it is his most noble work.
The story takes us to 14th century England, where Sir Nigel Loring is a young squire of humble lineage but with a fiery heart. To earn the right to ask for Lady Mary's hand, he must perform three deeds that prove his worth. And there lies the first lesson: love is not begged for; it is deserved through actions.
What moves me most about Nigel is that he is not an invincible warrior. He is small in stature, sometimes clumsy, but he possesses an iron will. His values are not abstract ideas but rules that govern every gesture. When he accepts a challenge, he does not think of glory, but of not letting his loved ones down.
In an era where so many young adult stories show cynical or morally ambiguous heroes, Nigel seems to me a balm that reminds us that courage is not the absence of fear, but acting in spite of it, and that a pledged word is worth more than any easy victory. Without a doubt, treating others well is not weakness, but the greatest strength.
Doyle wrote this novel at the end of his career, almost as a spiritual testament, and it shows that he took care with it, because the dialogues sparkle, the battles feel real, and the medieval landscape envelops without overwhelming. But above all, within it beats the conviction that a decent young man with clear ideals can change his destiny without betraying himself.
I will not lie to my teenage daughter to whom I recommend this reading: the language is denser than that of current young adult sagas, and the values of chivalry may sound strange to her. But that is precisely why I want her to read it now, not in ten years, so that she can argue with Nigel, so that she can ask herself whether his sense of honor can be translated to her world, and above all, so that she can see for herself that a story with swords and castles can speak of very intimate things, such as faithfulness to oneself, the patience to prove who you are, and the beauty of striving for an ideal.
Perhaps she will find passages old fashioned, perhaps she will even smile at so many "maidens" and "jousts," but I hope she also discovers, as I did, that beneath the armor beats a young man not so different from her, and that never goes out of style.

Cuando pienso en las primeras lecturas de verdad que deberรญa hacer mi hija, esas que dejan huella, no puedo evitar imaginar Sir Nigel en sus manos. No es la novela mรกs famosa de Arthur Conan Doyle, pero para mรญ es su obra mรกs noble.
La historia nos lleva a la Inglaterra del siglo XIV, donde Sir Nigel Loring es un joven escudero de linaje humilde pero corazรณn ardiente, que para ganar el derecho a pedir la mano de lady Mary debe realizar tres hazaรฑas que demuestren su valor. Y ahรญ estรก la primera lecciรณn: el amor no se mendiga, se merece con obras.
Lo que mรกs me emociona de Nigel es que no es un guerrero invencible. Es pequeรฑo de estatura, a veces torpe, pero posee una voluntad fรฉrrea. Sus valores no son ideas abstractas, sino reglas que rigen cada gesto, y cuando acepta un desafรญo no piensa en la gloria, sino en no fallar a los suyos.
En una รฉpoca donde tantas historias juveniles muestran hรฉroes cรญnicos o moralmente ambiguos, Nigel me parece un bรกlsamo que nos recuerda que la valentรญa no es ausencia de miedo, sino actuar a pesar de รฉl, y que la palabra empeรฑada vale mรกs que cualquier victoria fรกcil. Sin dudas, tratar bien a los demรกs no es debilidad, sino la mรกxima fortaleza.
Doyle escribiรณ esta novela al final de su carrera, casi como un testamento espiritual, y se nota que la cuidรณ porque los diรกlogos tienen chispa, las batallas se sienten reales, y el paisaje medieval envuelve sin abrumar. Pero sobre todo, late en ella la convicciรณn de que un muchacho decente, con ideales claros, puede cambiar su destino sin traicionarse.
No le voy a mentir a mi hija adolescente a la que le recomiendo esta lectura: el lenguaje es mรกs denso que el de las sagas juveniles actuales, y los valores de la caballerรญa pueden sonarle extraรฑos. Pero por eso mismo quiero que lo lea ahora, no dentro de diez aรฑos, para que discuta con Nigel, para que se pregunte si su sentido del honor es trasladable a su mundo, y sobre todo para que compruebe por sรญ misma que una historia con espadas y castillos puede hablar de cosas muy รญntimas como la fidelidad a uno mismo, la paciencia para demostrar quiรฉn se es, y la belleza de esforzarse por un ideal.
Tal vez ella encuentre pasajes anticuados, incluso tal vez sonrรญa ante tanto "doncella" y "liza", pero espero que tambiรฉn descubra, como yo, que bajo la armadura late un muchacho no tan distinto a ella, y eso nunca pasa de moda.
