Cada receta guarda en secreto el recuerdo de los momentos más importantes que atraviesa nuestra protagonista para alcanzar un atisbo de felicidad y probar al fin, aunque sea, por un breve instante, la plenitud de un amor imperecedero, libre de censura y correspondido.
Así conocemos la historia de Tita a través de la elaboración de platos insignes de la gastronomía mexicana que nos llevan de viaje por su cultura y costumbres, explicando no solo el proceso de elaboración, sino las razones extraordinarias por las que un hecho irracional podría marcar gran diferencia en el resultado de tales manjares, y cómo la intención del cocinero puede influir fuertemente en el comportamiento de sus comensales, causando grandes alegrías y devastadoras desgracias.
Pero es un don que acompaña solo a los que nacen en el seno de la cocina, que crecen con sus aromas, sonidos, peligros y encantos, y que logran comprender que el mundo puede escribirse con sus ingredientes y leerse a través de sus sabores.
Me da un poco de vergüenza pensar que posiblemente este ha sido el primer libro mexicano que he leído en mi vida, por más que intento recordar, los títulos más nombrados de ese país siguen estando en mi lista de libros por leer, y es algo en lo que no había pensado antes y que me hace dar cuenta de lo mucho que me estoy perdiendo, porque a través de Laura Esquivel he descubierto una faceta más interesante de la cultura mexicana, muy congruente con las ideas que tenemos gracias a otro tipo de medios de difusión pero realmente mucho más terrenal y admirable. No dudo que gracias a esta lectura decida adentrarme más en la literatura de este país.
Esta vez decidí pasarme por la biblioteca pública y ver si tenían disponible una copia de este libro antes de valerme de los medios electrónicos, hace un tiempo que ya quiero intentar tener menos cosas, me encantan los libros en físico pero me gustaría ser menos materialista, no ha sido fácil pero ¡creo que voy bien encaminada! No solo encontré la novela, sino que también disponen de la adaptación cinematográfica en formato DVD y aunque este ya no sea frecuente, al ser la película tan antigua es interesante poder contar con este recurso en préstamo.
El Libro
Es una novela que está escrita por entregas, 12 capítulos que comienzan describiéndonos una receta que posteriormente tendrá gran relevancia en los acontecimientos que se relatan mientras se elaboran los alimentos o en escenas que giran en torno a su preparación.
La historia abarca de principio a fin la vida de la protagonista, dejándonos indicios de lo que llegaría a ser su destino y, sin embargo, sorprendiéndonos con vuelcos inesperados en la historia.
Lo que más me sorprendió de esta novela fue la crudeza de la autora dentro del juego de realidades y ficciones que elabora, debo admitir que estaba predispuesta a leer una novela romántica del típico estilo intenso, llena de sufrimiento, drama y una frecuente tensión sexual; esto porque las vagas referencias que tenia de esta historia me incitaban a creer que era así, pero no podía estar más equivocada, es cierto que hay matices de esto en el desarrollo de los acontecimientos pero no son los rasgos definitivos del libro, al final yo me he quedado con una sensación de emoción y comedia bien equilibradas.

Claro que los personajes sufren y afrontan con gran pesar su destino, pero muy poco se dejan abstraer por la pena, creo que es una diferencia importante con novelas europeas del mismo estilo, imponer la necesidad de supervivencia y de ocuparse de asuntos comunes más que propios mantiene a los personajes centrados y es que, aunque por supuesto influyen mucho el contexto histórico y la época en que se desarrollan, hablamos de una familia de mujeres que no se permiten quitar el protagonismo de su vida y en que los hombres aunque están siempre presente, resultan prescindibles, en algunos momentos de la lectura llegué a pensar que los personajes masculinos, sin llegar a ser degradados, parecían simples adornos de la historia, en este caso ellos parecen las musas xD
Esta historia es muy mexicana, claramente, por tanto la fuerza de los personajes es extraordinaria y la crudeza de los hechos no dista de acontecimientos similares en la historia, Laura Esquivel los difumina dentro de su realismo mágico y les da un tono reconfortante que nos hace sentir la historia muy familiar, cercana y veraz. Ha sido todo un placer acompañar a la protagonista, incluso durante su sufrimiento, junto a sus recetas hasta el inesperado pero ciertamente muy adecuado desenlace.
El club de lectura
Como agua para chocolate fue la segunda propuesta hecha por El club de lectura de Hive para discutir en conjunto durante el mes de la mujer, se eligió para promover la lectura de grandes autoras de la literatura universal, habiendo ya leído a la inglesa Agatha Christie antes de esta, se buscó integrar en la agenda a una escritora latinoamericana con gran alcance y que nos ofreciera un volumen corto para que todos los interesados pudieran fácilmente participar en la lectura en un corto periodo de tiempo, por lo que cerramos con este libro el mes de la mujer y discutimos durante tres semanas las excentricidades de esta historia.
A diferencia de las anteriores lecturas que hemos hecho en conjunto, estas discusiones han sido mucho más distendidas, era una sensación general el que leíamos ávidamente porque además de ligera, la lectura del libro se parecía mucho a una telenovela y sentimos gran curiosidad por los detalles de los mezquinos enlaces románticos y el giro de los acontecimientos. Este par de lecturas ligeras nos ha permitido despejar un poco la mente y prepararnos para abordar historias un poco más complejas a continuación.

La película
Hay que decir de entrada que la guionista de esta película fue la mismísima Laura Esquivel, por lo que no es de sorprender que exista tanta similitud entre libro y película.
Hay detalles que han sufrido ligeros cambios, pero muy ligeros, más de lo que solemos esperar en este tipo de adaptaciones, se limitaron a fundir algunos personajes de relleno y obviar solo un par de eventos en la historia, sin eliminar de ellos el fundamento de su existencia en el libro.
A pesar de lo vieja que es la película (1992) la calidad de actuaciones y fotografía son bastante aceptables, la ambientación es perfecta y sobre todo la representación de los personajes de raza aborigen son inmejorables, los diálogos y sus formas logran representar muy acertadamente a ese sector de la sociedad que estaba al margen de los acontecimientos importantes en el seno de una familia de clase, como lo es la de la protagonista pero que en esta historia jugaba un papel sumamente importante.
No puedo criticar aunque sí mencionar, el hecho de que se pierda parte del encanto del libro en cuanto al protagonismo de las recetas en cada capítulo, porque no veo una manera fácil de relatar la historia sin tener que parar al inicio de cada capitulo, explicar la receta y separar abruptamente la historia, así que aunque intenten destacar los aspectos más importantes de las recetas y sus efectos sobre los que están bajo su influencia no te quedas al final de la película con la idea de seguir la evolución de la historia a través de un recetario. Aunque eso no le quita interés a la película.
Yo he disfrutado mucho al verla y comprender más las costumbres típicas de la época y lugar, creo que es un clásico digno de nuestro tiempo y no me molestaría volver a verla alguna vez.
Book review: Like Water for Chocolate

Each recipe secretly keeps the memory of the most important moments that our protagonist goes through to reach a glimpse of happiness and finally taste, even if only for a brief moment, the fullness of an everlasting love, free of censorship and reciprocated.
Thus we know the story of Tita, through the preparation of famous dishes of Mexican cuisine that take us on a journey through its culture and customs, explaining not only the process of preparation, but the extraordinary reasons why an irrational fact could make a big difference in the outcome of such delicacies, and how the intention of the cook can strongly influence the behavior of his guests, causing great joys and devastating misfortunes.
But it is a gift that accompanies only those who are born in the bosom of a kitchen, who grow up with its aromas, sounds, dangers and charms, and who manage to understand that the world can be written with its ingredients and read through its flavors.
I'm a little ashamed to think that this has possibly been the first Mexican book I've read in my life, as much as I try to remember, the most named titles from that country are still on my list of books to read, and it's something I hadn't thought about before and it makes me realize how much I'm missing because through Laura Esquivel I've discovered a more interesting facet of Mexican culture, very congruent with the ideas we have thanks to other types of media but really much more earthly and admirable. I have no doubt that thanks to this reading I will decide to go deeper into the literature of this country, the strength of the characters.
This time I decided to go to the public library and see if they had a copy of this book available before using electronic media, I have been wanting to try to have fewer objects, I love physical books but I would like to be less materialistic, it has not been easy but I think I'm on the right track! Not only did I find the novel, but they also have the film adaptation in DVD format and although this is no longer common, being the film so old it is interesting to have this resource on loan.
The book
It is a novel that is written in installments, 12 chapters that begin by describing a recipe that will later have great relevance in the events that are recounted while the food is being prepared or in scenes that revolve around its preparation.
The story covers the protagonist's life from beginning to end, leaving us with hints of what would become her destiny and yet surprising us with unexpected twists and turns in the story.
What surprised me most about this novel was the author's rawness within the game of realities and fictions that she elaborates, I must admit that I was predisposed to read a romance novel of the typical intense style, full of suffering, drama and frequent sexual tension; I thought this because the vague references I had of this story led me to believe that it was so, but I could not be more wrong, it is true that there are shades of this in the development of events but they are not the definitive features of the book, in the end I have been left with a well balanced sense of emotion and comedy.

Of course the characters suffer and face their fate with great regret, but very little are abstracted by grief, I think it is an important difference with European novels of the same style, impose the need for survival and deal with common issues rather than their own keeps the characters focused and that, although of course greatly influenced by the historical context and the time in which they develop, we are talking about a family of women who do not allow themselves to take away the protagonism of their lives and in which men, although they are always present, are dispensable, in some moments of the reading I came to think that the male characters, without being degraded, seemed mere ornaments of the story, in this case they seem the muses xD
This story is very Mexican, clearly, therefore the strength of the characters is extraordinary and the rawness of the facts is not far from similar events in history, Laura Esquivel blurs them within her magical realism and gives them a comforting tone that makes us feel the story very familiar, close and truthful. It has been a pleasure to accompany the protagonist, even during her suffering, along with her recipes until the unexpected but certainly very appropriate denouement.
The Book Club
Like Water for Chocolate was the second proposal made by "The Book Club" to discuss together during Women's Month, it was chosen to promote the reading of great authors of world literature, having already read the Englishwoman "Agatha Christie" before this one, We sought to integrate into the agenda a Latin American writer with great scope and who offered us a short book so that all those interested could easily participate in the reading in a short period of time, so we closed with this book the month of women and discussed for three weeks the eccentricities of this story.
Unlike the previous readings we have done together, these discussions have been much more relaxed, it was a general feeling that we were reading avidly because besides being light, the reading of the book felt very much like a soap opera and we were very curious about the details of the petty romantic liaisons and the turn of events. This pair of light reads allowed us to clear our minds a bit and prepare to tackle slightly more complex stories next.

The movie
It must be said that the screenwriter of this movie was Laura Esquivel herself, so it is not surprising that there is so much similarity between the book and the movie.
There are details that have undergone slight changes, but very slight, more than what we usually expect in this type of adaptations, they were limited to merge some filler characters and to obviate only a couple of events in the story, without eliminating from them the basis of their existence in the book.
In spite of the film's age (1992), the quality of the performances and photography are quite acceptable, the setting is perfect and above all the representation of the aboriginal characters is unbeatable, the dialogues and their ways manage to represent very accurately that sector of society that was on the margins of the important events in the bosom of a classy family, such as the protagonist's, but which in this story played an extremely important role.
I can't criticize, although I can mention, the fact that part of the charm of the book is lost in terms of the prominence of the recipes in each chapter, because I don't see an easy way to tell the story without having to stop at the beginning of each chapter, explain the recipe and abruptly separate the story, so although they try to highlight the most important aspects of the recipes and their effects on those who are under their influence, you are not left at the end of the film with the idea of following the evolution of the story through a recipe book. That doesn't detract from the interest of the film, though.
I really enjoyed watching it and understand more about the typical customs of the time and place, I think it is a classic worthy of our time and I wouldn't mind watching it again sometime.
