She was quite popular, especially in some circles, because the author is a well-known educational psychologist in America who has helped countless troubled children in truly degraded environments. Her books do, in fact, deal with some of her cases, written in a fictionalized manner, but not overly so. Of course, reading her methods now might be questionable and disapproved of in today's pedagogy, but they were probably cutting-edge at the time. Anyway, let's talk about this book, where the author is placed in a class full of children with special needs: two twins suffering from the effects of fetal alcohol syndrome, a boy with Tourette's syndrome, a very intelligent but agitated and violent boy, a girl with high-functioning autism, and Venus, a girl who is always silent, completely apathetic. It's unclear whether she has intellectual disability or selective mutism. She comes from a very degraded background, lives in a camper with eight brothers and sisters, some of whom are problematic like her, with an absent mother and several terrible, unreliable, and probably violent and abusive stepfathers.

It's true that she's always apathetic and silent, but not always. If she's touched or provoked, she reacts with outrageous outbursts of rage, violence, and screaming, so much so that she's expelled from school for these episodes. It seems everyone has given up on this little girl, too problematic, too angry, or too apathetic, like an immobile doll with a spring of violence that snaps. The school, the principal, the family—no one has the means, desire, or time to understand her or help her. She's one of those little girls now considered lost, beyond saving, but our author doesn't give up on her.
Here we see a beautiful journey of growth, knowledge, and resilience. The author, with enormous patience, creativity, sensitivity, and sometimes even unusual methods, slowly manages to penetrate this child's inner world, also thanks to books and comics (the therapeutic power of reading!). It's a fascinating book because it explores various avenues of help and also the difficulties of those working in the field, who clash with families, institutions, and limited funds and resources, facing children who live a living hell at home. I was very moved by this book, and I think I'll definitely seek out more by this author because she describes her journey and her methods for helping troubled children so well!
La autora está asignada a la clase con su asistente Julie. Tener una clase con niños problemáticos es muy difícil. A menudo hay peleas, riñas, discusiones y problemas, y la autora tiene que lidiar con ellos y, al mismo tiempo, encontrar diversos métodos para ayudar a los niños a aprender. Esta parte, como todo el libro, es muy interesante porque describe diversos métodos educativos creativos, interactivos y atractivos para ayudar a estos niños con dificultades de aprendizaje. Parece que todos se han dado por vencidos con esta niña, demasiado problemática, demasiado enfadada o demasiado apática, como una muñeca inmóvil con un resorte de violencia que se rompe. La escuela, el director, la familia: nadie tiene los medios, el deseo ni el tiempo para comprenderla ni ayudarla. Es una de esas niñas que ahora se consideran perdidas, sin salvación, pero nuestra autora no la abandona.
Aquí vemos un hermoso viaje de crecimiento, conocimiento y resiliencia. La autora, con enorme paciencia, creatividad, sensibilidad y, a veces, incluso métodos inusuales, logra penetrar poco a poco en el mundo interior de esta niña, también gracias a libros y cómics (¡el poder terapéutico de la lectura!). Es un libro fascinante porque explora diversas vías de ayuda y también las dificultades de quienes trabajan en este campo, quienes se enfrentan a familias, instituciones y a la escasez de fondos y recursos, al enfrentarse a niños que viven un infierno en casa. Este libro me conmovió mucho y creo que definitivamente buscaré más de esta autora porque describe tan bien su trayectoria y sus métodos para ayudar a niños con problemas.
