Good morning and happy Saturday, blogging friends, how are you? Here I am again, reviewing a book I really enjoyed. As a teenager, I loved books about vampires, and I've read so many, but this one had escaped my attention. It's a series of three books I'm devouring, obviously themed around Dracula. Today, I'm sharing the first book, written in a sort of epistolary, diary-like format. The protagonists of this first book, which unfolds across generations, are Arkady, the nephew of a strange uncle named Vlad, who bears an uncanny resemblance to the Vlad Dracula, so feared in Wallachia and surrounded by dark legends and superstitions; Mary, Arkady's polite and rational English wife; and Szuzanna, Arkady's sister, born crippled and who has always lived in the gloomy castle in Transylvania, under the shadowy presence of her uncle. Arkady and his pregnant wife decide to move to Transylvania for business. Their diaries initially enthuse them about their new life, even though Transylvania is very different from England. Mary, in particular, expresses some doubts about those dark, gloomy places and that isolated castle. From the very beginning, the inhabitants appear frightened of them, and Mary can't believe it. Arkady, on the other hand, seems to fit in better with his past.

De adolescente, me encantaban los libros sobre vampiros, y he leído muchísimos, pero este se me había escapado. Es una serie de tres libros que estoy devorando, obviamente con la temática de Drácula. Hoy les comparto el primer libro, escrito en una especie de formato epistolar, a modo de diario. Los protagonistas de este primer libro, que se desarrolla a lo largo de generaciones, son Arkady, sobrino de un extraño tío llamado Vlad, quien guarda un asombroso parecido con Vlad Drácula, tan temido en Valaquia y rodeado de oscuras leyendas y supersticiones; Mary, la educada y racional esposa inglesa de Arkady; y Szuzanna, la hermana de Arkady, inválida de nacimiento y que siempre ha vivido en el lúgubre castillo de Transilvania, bajo la sombría presencia de su tío. Arkady y su esposa embarazada deciden mudarse a Transilvania por negocios. Al principio, sus diarios los entusiasman con su nueva vida, a pesar de que Transilvania es muy diferente de Inglaterra. Arkady and his sister seem very attached to the enigmatic figure of this uncle, a charming, white-haired uncle with strange habits. He only comes out at night, is very convincing, and loves his nieces and nephews almost morbidly. In the diaries, we immediately read Mary's doubts and perplexities about this uncle and the villagers who seem to fear him. She finds him disturbing, while Arkady, despite some fears, is initially overcome by him. Then, Suzanna's voice changes everything, describing her almost erotic relationship and a deep, passionate love for her uncle. Little by little, Suzanna's health deteriorates, and Mary begins to give in to superstitions when she discovers that Uncle Vlad visits her niece every night and sees inhuman things from her window. In her diaries, she describes her concern but also the transition from skepticism to a firm belief that Vlad is a supernatural being. Arkady's diaries also reveal the first signs of doubt, especially from visions of his dead brother's ghost, which lead him to question his sanity. Both spouses are torn between their strong rationality and the irrational world around them—strange wolves, strange rituals, the villagers' voices...
Arkady y su hermana parecen muy apegados a la enigmática figura de este tío, un encantador tío de pelo blanco y hábitos extraños. Solo sale de noche, es muy convincente y ama a sus sobrinos y sobrinas con un cariño casi morboso. En los diarios, leemos de inmediato las dudas y perplejidades de Mary sobre este tío y los aldeanos, que parecen temerle. Ella lo encuentra inquietante, mientras que Arkady, a pesar de algunos temores, al principio se siente abrumado por él. Entonces, la voz de Suzanna lo cambia todo, describiendo su relación casi erótica y un amor profundo y apasionado por su tío. Poco a poco, la salud de Suzanna se deteriora, y Mary comienza a ceder a las supersticiones al descubrir que el tío Vlad visita a su sobrina todas las noches y ve cosas inhumanas desde su ventana. And then there's Suzanna's health, which is rapidly deteriorating, as if she were bleeding to death, but she doesn't seem to be in any pain; she almost seems in an erotic delirium, just like her diaries: voluptuous, perverse, full of anticipation for what's to come, for what Vlad promised her. The first book seems very calm but is beautifully written, beautifully characterizing the various characters' points of view and their growth throughout the story, their tension, their fears, their slowly eroding reasoning, the revelations of a reality far more disturbing than the one they imagined. Towards the end, for action lovers, there will also be more active, more adventurous, but also more sadistic moments. An excellent vampire novel in a Gothic style, but with a more raw edge. Y luego está la salud de Suzanna, que se deteriora rápidamente, como si se desangrara, pero no parece sufrir ningún dolor; casi parece estar sumida en un delirio erótico, igual que sus diarios: voluptuosa, perversa, llena de anticipación por lo que está por venir, por lo que Vlad le prometió. El primer libro parece muy tranquilo, pero está bellamente escrito, describiendo con maestría los puntos de vista de los personajes y su crecimiento a lo largo de la historia, su tensión, sus miedos, su razonamiento que se erosiona lentamente, las revelaciones de una realidad mucho más inquietante que la que imaginaban. Hacia el final, para los amantes de la acción, también habrá momentos más activos, más aventureros, pero también más sádicos. Una excelente novela de vampiros de estilo gótico, pero con un toque más crudo. La disfruté mucho, y obviamente reseñaré el segundo libro pronto. ¡Nos vemos pronto, lectores!
