La vida que vivió Stefan Zweig en cierto punto es increíble, más allá de lograr ser reconocido como un gran autor, tuvo que presenciar dos guerras mundiales, la disolución del país en que vivía, el surgimiento de ideologías extremas, como el facismo o el nazismo. A eso hay que sumarle que en varios capítulos trata de mostrar las costumbres y problemáticas locales.

Entre lo local, se menciona el furor intelectual y creativo que se vivía en Viena, donde los jóvenes buscaban ser los más prodigiosos y creativos, dando espacio para la experimentación, y como ello acabó beneficiando a Zweig, que en poco descubrió su vocación como escritor. Por otro lado, se mencionan también las miserias, como la alta represión e hipocresía sexual, y que hablar de ello era casi imposible.
Among the local issues, he mentions the intellectual and creative fervor that existed in Vienna, where young people sought to be the most prodigious and creative, giving space for experimentation, and how this ended up benefiting Zweig, who soon discovered his vocation as a writer. On the other hand, he also mentions the miseries, such as high repression and sexual hypocrisy, and how it was almost impossible to talk about it.
Un apartado interesante, es obviamente lo relacionado a las guerras mundiales, ya que veremos el paso a paso de los eventos, y cómo los ciudadanos se muestran incrédulos de que algo realmente grande vaya a pasar. También en el lado de las consecuencias, veremos los efectos catastróficos que generaron en la economía, tanto en Viena como en la vecina Alemania.
An interesting section is obviously the one related to the world wars, as we will see the events unfold step by step, and how citizens are incredulous that something really big is going to happen. Also, on the consequences side, we will see the catastrophic effects they had on the economy, both in Vienna and in neighboring Germany.
En el lado personal, veremos como de un momento a otro el autor se volvió muy popular, siendo uno de los escritores más leídos de su época; sin embargo, la historia le tendría un gran revés, pues su obra sería prohibida, al ser judio en una sociedad que los perseguía. Debido a varios de los eventos mencionados, tuvo que vivir en diversas ciudades europeas, y al final mudarse a Brasil.
On a personal level, we will see how, from one moment to the next, the author became very popular, becoming one of the most widely read writers of his time; however, history would deal him a major setback, as his work would be banned because he was Jewish in a society that persecuted Jews. Due to several of the events mentioned, he had to live in various European cities and eventually move to Brazil.
En definitiva, más allá de conocer la vida del autor, el libro nos permite conocer una Europa de grandes cambios, donde no hay una vuelta atrás, y el mundo y su sociedad será muy diferente pasadas esas décadas de principio del siglo XX.
In short, beyond learning about the author's life, the book allows us to learn about a Europe undergoing great changes, where there is no turning back, and the world and its society will be very different after those decades at the beginning of the 20th century.
