Hi book lovers! I'm excited to share my very first book review with you all. I have been into reading lately aside from the fact of killing my boredom, reading is a way of exercising the mind and building knowledge.
I got hold of the book Sunshine by Robin McKinley, all thanks to my sister. I was triggered to read it since it involves vampires and magic and I am a huge fan of anything vampiric. There is just something irresistible and fascinating about vampire stories and I love to read about them and this one didn't disappoint.
Sunshine was published in 2003. The story is a perfect combination of dark fantasy, romance, and a touch of humor. I can say it is a perfect blend of darkness and light; beauty and the beast; living and the undead—with a delicious hint of cinnamon rolls.
Summary
Sunshine never imagined she’d be a master vampire slayer— why would she? She always wakes up at 4 am every morning except for Mondays to do her favorite thing in the world which is to make cinnamon rolls. And she has some other things to worry about; her overprotective mom; low-quality flour from her supplier, and her errant little brother. She drove to the lake that night to relieve herself of her worries but they found her. She never heard them coming —they were vampires!
That unfortunate night gave birth to fate; self-discovery; and her darkest and most sensual gift wrapped in a box with a ribbon on it—she calls it “my vampire”.
This perfect blend of light and darkness brought about an epic victory in the story
My opinion and ratings
I love the storyline and narration. It is not the typical charming vampire story, it is different and original. I laughed a few times because of the hint of humor.
The characters felt realistic, not too perfect, and well-played. The book has an amazing narration that gives you a clear vision of each character. It has its fantasies but yet very realistic. For example the raw and gritty description of the vampire characters and their lifestyle. I have watched a lot of vampire movies that make vampires look so cool, having almost zero flaws except sunlight. Well, this book has made me throw away all the lovable imaginations of vampires I always held onto.
The characters are not overly fantasized but still have every bit of fantasy in them.
However, the ending was a bit abrupt and frustrating, I wish it continued. It was a bit of a cliffhanger and I was desperate to know what happened next. I also would have loved it if there was a deeper romance between the two main characters.
Nonetheless, it is a nice story and I will rate it a solid 4/5 because of the originality in the story. If you are a fan of magic and vampires, this book is a must-read.
Robin McKinley is an amazing storyteller and I would love to read her other stories.
