"The Love Hypothesis" was written by Ali Hazelwood and published in 2021. It is now New York Times best seller, a worldwide best seller and a BookTok sensation. This is a romantic novel that follows the conventional fake dating troop in a book that will melt your heart.
The book follows Olive Smith a third-year Ph.D. candidate at Stanford University. Her research topic has a personal deep meaning that keeps her highly motivated. Her most significant relationship in her life is her best friend Anh. Anh is a true believer in love and happily ever after, Olive is not. But in order to appease her friend she decides to fake date. She kisses the first man she encounters and that man happens to be Professor Adam Carlsen, a well known ass. To her surprise he agrees to her scheme of fake dating. But as time goes by their fake relationship starts to feel more and more real. Are they becoming actual friends or something more? Can they get past all of the obstacles standing in their way?
I really liked this book. It is just a warming, feel good book. I loved Olive. Everyone can empathize with her. You may not be a STEM student or a scientist, but most women know how patriarchy and sexism can oppress and depress you. That part was totally unexpected and added to the book in my opinion. You want Olive to succeed in her career a lot more than you want her to succeed in her love life because she really cares about science and about representing women in science. However, you do want her to succeed in her love life as well. Her and Adam's chemistry is unquestionable and you want her to do something about it.
That being said I actually didn't like Adam all that much. He just didn't feel real to me, because despite the fact that he is an asshole, he is way too perfect. It came across as unnatural to me. He only losses his temper at the appropriate moments, he always behaves in a perfect and respectful manner. There is something about him that felt like a Mr. Perfect man and not real. I mean being super smart and super sexy already feels like an unlikely combination, but adding his behavior to it feels like it breaks the perfect illusion of the book. You wish that he was a real person, but you know there is no reality in which he is.
As much as I loved this book, I have to admit it doesn't really have a plot. Not a lot goes on it and there is only one major conflict in this book that holds any water. The book just pleasantly glides by and leaves you with a warm feeling that a pleasant romance leaves you with. Adam and Olive are not the new Mr. Darcy and Miss Bennet as they are not a memorable couple, but you will always remember this book with a pleasant smile.
