Hello everyone,
Welcome to a new concept from a book I reviewed in 2025. This time, I chose to share more light on my knowledge from the book. I have always believed that a book could teach you more than one thing or give you more than a single insight. So today's writing will be another lesson concept from the book The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle, but my new concept will be
BE PRESENT
Before I move on to share more light, here is a previous article I wrote last year about the book, if you would like to read it for more context.
The concept of being in the present brought me to this book review. I share in the statement from the author of the book, Eckhart Tolle, that realize deeply that the present moment is all you ever have. This makes you understand it is all about enjoying what you have now at the given time instead of focusing on what is not there. The author seeks to share that the human mind is usually somewhere else, dealing with something else. Be it mistakes, regrets, missed opportunities, or painful memories, or they decide to use my memo, that is, worry about the future, especially within the area of worries, goals, fears, and imagined outcomes. This clouds the mind with things that are not present or things that are gone.
The author argues that the ability of the mind to ponder a lot of things causes distraction in our brains. When I look at it, there is some solid point here, especially when my mind runs wild. I have seen that the conception of my mind being noisy is because of how I have paid so much attention to a lot of things. I will think of this, and I am not yet done; I am already running on the next thought. This is interesting to me because I have a loop within a loop when it comes to my mind. This is what I mean, I could be thinking about an apple, and after spending a couple of minutes on the apple, I begin to ask myself questions like why was the apple created, how did it come to live and when did it come to life? This is what a loop within a loop looks like, and it is every easy to get roped in when you keep asking more and more questions. Although this can be a good means of learning something new because it is kind of the fuel for curiosity, at least in my opinion, it can create noise. Something like this is what it means for the mind to be noisy.
Take it back to the book, and I am already seeing why the author claims that humans find it difficult to be in the present, and in our defence, it is not to be present in a given time like this. There is a lot competing for our attention in the world of today, and there is definitely a lot going on in the world. This alone is enough for our minds to get busy, making it hard to be present. The understanding of the past is gone, and the future is yet to happen, but the present is now, a strong tool to have and remind oneself about. We have to remember to appreciate the things around us, the people we see, what we are doing, and the fact that we are alive and breathing, as these are micro steps towards the direction of being present. Also, engage in the community around you and appreciate the little things, for nothing is guaranteed.
