What a controversial title for a book, if you ask me. But here is the funny thing. I enjoy topics and even individuals with opinions that are controversial or that may seem different from the ordinary norms. The realms that govern human reality today are basic and merely simple, which pushes the brain to sometimes think beyond the ordinary, or at least that is what I think. Are you not tired of the everyday norm of doing things that society and this world in general has to offer?
No wonder it has been proven over and over again that the human brain enjoys the break from our everyday reality, which is why fictional movies like Game of Thrones, The Wheel of Time, The Lord of the Rings, and even the fictional books these movies are based on are top sellers.
Why do I say this? You must be asking at this point.
Writers like Mark Manson, I can bet you a dime and more that this is how their brain works. They have mastered the art of passing out vital lessons through the use of statements that may seem controversial on the surface, but when looked into with depth, have truthful knowledge to give.
Imagine one who wants to tell you about having hope, and he starts by telling you everything is fucked. Raising your blood pressure right before you get started, but in return, settles your mind to expect nothing much, which can be seen as a form of hope. Seeing the basis that everything around is a big problem after another problem, and it continues like a never-ending loop.
Or is it when he wants to make you understand the virtue in understanding how to prioritize what you should care about, instead, he goes down the route of telling you the subtle art of not giving a fuck, making the author look like a selfish jackass if you are one to judge a book by its cover.
In his defense, which book title will grab your interest, a book with a simple word like prioritize or a book with strong words like not giving a fuck? That is genius marketing at work right there, and that is how I got hooked on Mark Manson's books.
The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck is a book everybody should read at least once because of the knowledge it has to give. The book simply talks about the ability to prioritize what gets your attention and time, as we live in a world where a lot is going on all at once. As the author describes, there would be problems every day, and life is one big problem basket; when you are done with one, another comes, and if you are a lucky individual like me, you might even get two or more at once.
If you are a Nigerian or even a citizen of any given country, you should not be new to the fact that social media is filled with a lot going on in the world. It is either that there is a government scandal, a conflict between two nations, poverty in the land, a hike in fuel prices (I know Nigerians can relate), or something that is not pleasant happening on a grand scale. Here is what the book says: you cannot do anything about it all on your own; instead, the more you consume the information, the more you get worried and deviate from the things you can actually do something about.
Instead, focus on the things you can do something about. Are you worried about the struggling condition of your currency or economy, like for me, the naira? That is fine, but do not dwell so much on worrying about it; rather, focus on how you can earn more or better still in a more stable currency like Hive Backed Dollar (HBD). Or are you concerned about the growing conflict between nations? Instead, focus on spreading love, starting with your neighbours, friends, family, and even a random stranger.
There is not much that can ever be done through worrying alone; rather, devote your time to the things within your control and prioritize what gets your attention and time. This is the true meaning of not giving a fuck.
