Hola, mis queridos Bookworms. Hoy de nuevo me encuentro por acá con una nueva reseña de un libro que me costó bastante leer: Babel. De Kuang. Cuando leo, lo hago para desconectarme de mi realidad, para sumir en mundos fantásticos y de ficción que me saquen de las cuatro paredes en la que habito. No quiero leer para caer en alguna depresión o molestarme por la lectura que acabo de leer. No creo que sea la misma razón para todos, pero en mi caso, al menos, así lo es. En el caso de esta lectura, me pasaron muchas cosas, y estuve lidiando con cada página que leía hasta llegar al final.

Hello, my dear Bookworms. Today, I'm here again with a new review of a book I had a hard time reading: Babel. By Kuang. When I read, I do it to disconnect from my reality, to immerse myself in fantastic and fictional worlds that take me out of the four walls I inhabit. I don't want to read to fall into some depression or get upset about the reading I've just done. I don't think that's the same reason for everyone, but in my case, at least, it is. In the case of this read, there was a lot going on for me, and I was dealing with each page I read until I got to the end.

Babel: An Arcane History

Robin Swift fue el nombre que escogió nuestro protagonista el día que Robert Lowell lo extrajo de su tierra natal, Cantón. Viajaron durante cuatro meses en barco hasta Inglaterra, en dónde sería adoptado como pupilo y se entrenaría en el fino arte de las lenguas, entre las que se destacaban latín, griego, inglés, y por supuesto, chino cantones, su lengua madre. Todos estos exhaustivos estudios comandados por el Prof. Lovell, tenían su fin, que Robin, ingresara a Babel en la prestigiosa universidad de Oxford, en dónde aprendería el arte de la traducción y el tallado en plata. La plata, y las grabaciones en ella, hacía que el mundo avanzara a pasos agigantados, y los babeles, eran los encargados de que esto pudiera suceder. Eran los magos del mundo, solo unos pocos lograban ingresar y en esta promoción, entrarían tres jóvenes más que se convertirían en la nueva familia de Robin durante los próximos cuatro años.

Empecé a leer este libro, por muchas recomendaciones que vi, y la razón principal por la que me llamaba la atención era porque se suponía que era de fantasía. El género es fantasía y ficción histórica, pero en realidad es más ficción histórica, porque la fantasía y el mundo fantástico es poco perceptible.

Robin Swift was the name chosen by our protagonist the day Robert Lowell took him from his native land, Canton. They traveled for four months by ship to England, where he would be adopted as a pupil and trained in the fine art of languages, including Latin, Greek, English and, of course, Cantonese Chinese, his mother tongue. All these exhaustive studies commanded by Prof. Lovell, had their end, that Robin, would enter Babel in the prestigious Oxford University, where he would learn the art of translation and silver carving. The silver, and the engravings on it, made the world advance by leaps and bounds, and the Babels were the ones in charge of making this happen. They were the wizards of the world, only a few managed to enter and in this promotion, three more young people would enter and become Robin's new family for the next four years.

I started reading this book, because of many recommendations I saw, and the main reason it caught my attention was because it was supposed to be fantasy. The genre is fantasy and historical fiction, but it's really more historical fiction, because the fantasy and fantasy world is thin on the ground.

Hay que tener en consideración de que la escritora, quien además de realizar sus estudios de Postgrado en prestigiosas universidades como Oxford y Cambridge, estudió traducción, tomó este libro y vomitó todos los conocimientos que adquirió en sus estudios en él. Esto logró que me aburriera increíblemente, porque entiendo la oda que le hizo a su carrera adorada, pero a mí toda esta parte hacía que se me hiciera más y más lenta la lectura. Pero había algo que aún me mantenía apegada. Es propicio comentar, de que es una joven con un gran talento para escribir, y se nota que es una letrada y no alguien salido directamente de Wattpad. Sabe mantener el hilo de lo que está contando, así se me haga absurdamente aburrido, pero aún quería seguir leyendo para ver el desenlace de la historia.

Ya fue demasiado tarde cuando me di cuenta de que iba el libro. Si quieres leer un libro de los inicios de la revolución industrial, y tomas un elemento como el de la plata grabada con traducciones, y esta la suples con la electricidad, los derechos laborales, la post colonización y un montón de propaganda izquierdista, este es el tipo de lectura que te gustará.

Estuve a punto de caer en bloqueo lector. Me tomó dos semanas leerme este libro. Me perdió en el momento en el que la resolución de un problema fantástico haya sido el de realizar una huelga en la universidad para desestabilizar el país. No espero que los que no tengan mi mismo contexto social, entiendan por qué esto me causa un problema. Pero también sé, que muchos de mis coterráneos, que pasaron por este tipo de situaciones, me entenderán.

You have to take into consideration that the writer, who in addition to her graduate studies at prestigious universities such as Oxford and Cambridge, studied translation, took this book. She threw up all the knowledge she acquired in her studies in it. This made me incredibly bored, because I understand the ode he made to his adored career, but to me this whole part made the reading slower and slower. But there was something that still kept me attached. It is propitious to comment, that she is a young woman with a great talent for writing, and you can tell she is literate and not someone straight out of Wattpad. She knows how to keep the thread of what she is telling, even if it gets absurdly boring for me, but I still wanted to keep reading to see the outcome of the story.

It was too late by the time I realized what the book was about. If you want to read a book about the beginnings of the industrial revolution, and you take an element like engraved silver with translations, this one supplements it with electricity, labor rights, post colonization, and a lot of leftist propaganda. This is the kind of read you'll enjoy.

I almost fell into reader's block. It took me two weeks to read this book. It lost me at the point where the resolution to a fantastic problem has been to go on strike at the university to destabilize the country. I don't expect those, who don't have my same social context, to understand why this causes me an issue. But I also know that many of my fellow countrymen, who have gone through this type of situation, will understand me.

Perdí muchos años y tiempo de vida a causa de las largas huelgas en mi universidad. Fueron innumerables las veces que me afectó el humo de las bombas lacrimógenas que lanzaban para deshacer las protestas y las huelgas. Que en la mayoría de los casos eran por razones de reivindicaciones estudiantiles, para protestar por el aumento del ticket del almuerzo (que era absurdamente barato), o por el aumento de pasajes estudiantiles. Esto en algunos casos, en otros casos, no tenía razón de ser, simplemente causar incomodidad y no más. Podíamos pasar meses sin ver clases y perder mucho de nuestro valioso tiempo.

Así que cuando llegó esta parte, me molesté mucho, pasé un par de días sin querer agarrar el libro por la incomodidad que me causaba. Y ya dije las razones, quería leer fantasía, y no encontré nada de eso.

Que a mí me haya causado alguna incomodidad no quita que sea una buena lectura, es solo que a mí no me dejó un buen sabor de boca. Así que aquí les comparto la reseña para el que quiera leer algo más serio que lo que suelo leer. ¡Un abrazo y seguimos leyendo!

I lost many years and time of life because of the long strikes at my university. There were countless times that I was affected by the smoke of the tear gas bombs that were thrown to break up protests and strikes. Which in most cases were for reasons of student demands, to protest for the increase of the lunch ticket (which was absurdly cheap), or for the increase of student fares. This in some cases, in other cases, had no reason to be, simply to cause discomfort and no more. We could go months without seeing classes and lose a lot of our valuable time.

So when it came to this part, I was very upset, I spent a couple of days not wanting to pick up the book because of the discomfort it caused me. And I already said the reasons, I wanted to read fantasy, and I didn't find any of that.

Just because it caused me some discomfort doesn't mean it wasn't a good read, it just didn't leave a good taste in my mouth. So here I share the review for those who want to read something more serious than what I usually read, hugs and keep reading!
