Buenas tardes comunidad de Hive book club, quienes me hayan leído antes sabrán de mi fascinación por las historias del escritor Edgar Allan Poe, no por nada se convirtió en mi escritor favorito, disfruto de los géneros de misterio y terror y Edgar es pionero en escribir ese tipo de historias en el estilo de relato corto.
Hoy quiero hablar un poco sobre uno de mis relatos favoritos escritos por él, titulado "El gato negro".
Good afternoon Hive book club community, those who have read me before will know about my fascination for Edgar Allan Poe's stories, not for nothing he became my favorite writer, I enjoy the mystery and horror genres and Edgar is a pioneer in writing that kind of stories in the short story style.
Today I want to talk a little bit about one of my favorite stories written by him, titled "The Black Cat".
El gato negro es un relato corto literario considerado un clásico en el género de terror, nos cuenta la historia de un hombre con problemas de alcoholismo que se empieza a obsesionar con el gato negro que tenía de mascota (al cual de hecho quería mucho, era su mascota favorita de entre todas las que tenía) junto con su esposa. Todo se termina saliendo de control y el hombre termina perdiendo la cordura, cometiendo un crimen atroz.
Es curioso, pues el protagonista de la historia comienza narrando como él sabía que algo malo le iba a pasar y nos cuenta cómo antes de volverse un alcohólico era una persona muy buena y gentil que disfrutaba de la compañía de los animales, el mismo compara su cambio de personalidad al caer en las garras del alcohol como ser poseído por el demonio, cosa que mientras vamos leyendo nos damos cuenta de que no es realmente así, pues él estaba perfectamente consciente de sus impulsos de maldad, pero, aun así, se dejó caer en ellos, apoyado por la oscuridad que creció en él debido a su problema con la bebida y el no tener el éxito deseado.
Entre remordimientos, impulsos, deseos, acciones y consecuencias se narra la historia del atormentado hombre que termino pagando justo por pecador.
The Black Cat is a literary short story considered a classic in the horror genre, it tells the story of a man with alcoholism problems who becomes obsessed with the black cat he had as a pet (which he loved very much, it was his favorite pet among all the ones he had) along with his wife. Everything gets out of control and the man ends up losing his sanity, committing a atrocious crime.
It is curious, because the protagonist of the story begins narrating how he knew that something bad was going to happen to him and tells us how before becoming an alcoholic he was a very good and gentle person who enjoyed the company of animals, he compares his personality change when he fell into the claws of alcohol as being possessed by the devil, but as we read on, we realize that this is not really the case, since he was perfectly aware of his evil impulses and yet he allowed himself to fall into them, supported by the darkness that grew in him due to his drinking problem and not having the desired success.
Between remorse, impulses, desires, actions and consequences is narrated the story of the tormented man who ended up paying the price for his sin.
El relato en general me parece fascinante, tiene la cantidad exacta de terror y misterio, no es excesiva, no se siente forzada como muchas historias que intentan crear terror con exageraciones. La manera en la que está narrada y como el gato negro se convierte en una especie de símbolo de castigo y justicia es demasiado buena, el desenlace es excelente y el final completamente digno de una gran historia.
Nos encontraremos con una forma de escribir filosófica, al leer veremos cómo se plantean ideas, se dicen frases y pensamientos donde se cuestionan acciones del ser que nos permitirán analizar a profundidad al personaje principal y sus motivaciones. Se sabe que Edgar tenía tendencias filosóficas e incluso hizo varios escritos en torno a esto, por lo que no es sorpresa que sus historias de terror tengan tintes filosóficos también.
I find the story in general fascinating, it has just the right amount of terror and mystery, it is not excessive, it doesn't feel forced like many stories that try to create fear with exaggerations. The way it is narrated and how the black cat becomes a kind of symbol of punishment and justice is too good, the outcome is excellent and the ending completely worthy of a great story.
We will encounter a philosophical way of writing, as we read we will see how ideas are presented, phrases and thoughts are said where actions of the being are questioned which will allow us to analyze in depth the main character and his motivations. It is known that Edgar had philosophical tendencies and even made several writings around this, so it is no surprise that his horror stories have philosophical overtones as well.
