Book Review: Evergreen by Prisca Primasari

Halo book worm...

I found this book on a bookshelf in the Lebak Bulus MRT while I was waiting for my friend. I read the blurb on the back cover and discovered that the novel is set in Tokyo. I'm writing fiction set in various Japanese cities, so I was intrigued to read it. Furthermore, the author of this novel was also one of the authors whose work I'd been dying to read. So this felt like fulfilling a long-held desire. How fortunate I was to find this wonderful novel on a public bookshelf.

Evegreen tells the story of a woman, an editor at a prominent Tokyo publishing house, who has just been laid off. This unilateral layoff has changed River's life. She is on the verge of severe stress. However, she is finally able to recover after discovering an ice cream shop called Evergreen.

This ice cream shop is not yet busy, but it has a large number of employees. The owner, Yuya, deliberately opened the ice cream shop to accommodate people with various problems into his business. Unemployed, River eventually joins Evergreen as an ice cream maker, but who would have thought that her presence at the ice cream shop would lead to the reason that led to her being laid off from the publishing company.

This novel has a light-hearted storyline, but its uniqueness lies in Prisca's flowing, easy-to-understand writing style and relatable conflict. Each character she creates has their own imperfections, but together, those imperfections become a strength for resilience. I really like how the author builds chemistry between the characters. The only thing missing is a sweet touch to the romance.

But what's clear is that this novel didn't disappoint me at all. I loved it in every aspect, including the eye-catching cover.
