The plots range from comic and romantic situations to daring stories about religion and social differences. The funny thing is that, although the book was written in the Middle Ages, many of these stories talk about things that still happen today: love deceptions, relationship problems, gossip, mistakes, crazy decisions... it's almost like watching a current series, but in a medieval version!
One of the most striking aspects of the Decameron is its fresh and daring tone. Boccaccio was not afraid to mock the powerful, the hypocritical religious people or the norms of the time. His characters are alive, very real, and full of desires, doubts and human emotions. That makes the book not feel as distant as other classics.
If you are going to read The Decameron, I warn you that some of its stories may have a slightly sexist outlook, but we must remember that it is nothing more than a reflection of the historical context in which it was written. And if you need to stop reading for some reason, that's okay, because each story is independent of the other, so you can read one or two when you have time, as if it were a podcast or a series of individual chapters.

En varias ocasiones les he contado que cuando niña tomaba a escondidas algunos libros de la biblioteca personal de mi hermana mayor, y que mi madre no me permitía leer abiertamente pues consideraba que eran muy fuertes para mi corta edad. Pero, como ya saben, siempre me las arreglé para leer cuanta joya literaria caía en mis manos.
Fue así que, apenas entrando a la secundaria, me bebí de un golpe y con avidez el libro que hoy les presento: El Decamerón de Giovanni Boccaccio.
"El Decamerón" es una obra escrita por el italiano Giovanni Boccaccio y aunque es un libro muy antiguo, sus historias tan humanas, divertidas, picarescas y a veces hasta atrevidas, podrían haber sido contada, perfectamente, en estos tiempos que, según la opinión de muchos hay más mentes abiertas. Imagino que en su época debió haber sido todo un escándalo y quizás por eso me gusta más el libro y admiro más a su valiente autor.
El libro tiene 100 cuentos, que son narrados por varios jóvenes durante diez días. Cada cuento tiene su propio estilo. Las tramas van desde situaciones cómicas, románticas, hasta atrevidas narraciones sobre religión y las diferencias sociales. Lo curioso es que, aunque el libro fue escrito en la Edad Media, muchas de estas historias hablan de cosas que todavía suceden hoy: engaños amorosos, problemas de pareja, chismes, errores, decisiones locas... ¡es casi como ver una serie actual, pero en versión medieval!
Uno de los aspectos más llamativos del Decamerón es su tono fresco y atrevido. Boccaccio no tenía miedo de burlarse de los poderosos, de los religiosos hipócritas o de las normas de la época. Sus personajes son vivos, muy reales, y están llenos de deseos, dudas y emociones humanas. Eso hace que el libro no se sienta tan lejano como otros clásicos.
Si vas a leer El Decamerón, te aviso que a algunas de sus historias pueden tener una vis un poco machista, pero debemos recordar que no es más que el reflejo del contexto histórico en el que fue escrito. Sin embargo, ocurre algo curioso y es que, haciéndole contrapartida a lo que les acabo de comentar, también podemos encontrar otros cuentos donde muchas de las mujeres en el libro toman el control de sus propias historias, lo cual, no podemos negar, era bastante inusual para ese tiempo.
Aunque no es un libro pequeño, se lee de una manera super fluida y placentera. Los momentos de risas y travesuras, sobre todo en los rincones ocultos de la abadía y sus secretos, hacen de esta obra una delicia de principio a fin. Y si necesitas parar de leer por algún motivo, no pasa nada, porque cada cuento es independiente del otro, así que puedes leer uno o dos cuando tengas tiempo, como si fuera un podcast o una serie de capítulos sueltos.
