Bangladesh Chief Adviser seeks greater Qatari Investment, Offers Exclusive Economic Zone
DOHA, April 23:
Bangladesh Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus called for deeper economic cooperation with Qatar, inviting Qatari investment across key sectors and offering an exclusive economic zone in Bangladesh dedicated to manufacturers from the kingdom, including defence equipment plants.
During a high-level meeting and luncheon hosted by Qatar’s Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Dr. Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, the Chief Adviser emphasized Bangladesh’s readiness to facilitate Qatari industrial ventures through streamlined investment opportunities and infrastructure support.
He expressed gratitude for Qatar's decision to recruit 725 Bangladeshi troops and urged for expanded recruitment to strengthen the Qatari security forces.
Later, at a separate meeting with Qatar’s Commerce Minister Sheikh Faisal bin Al Thani in Lusail City, the Chief Adviser discussed expanding bilateral trade and investment.
He highlighted opportunities in Bangladesh’s transportation, banking, and hospitality sectors, noting that recent economic reforms have significantly improved the country’s investment climate.
"Our aim is to turn Bangladesh into an economic and manufacturing hub," the Chief Adviser said.
In the afternoon, Deputy Prime Minister Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al-Qawari hosted the Chief Adviser for a tea party, where discussions focused on mutual interests, particularly enhancing manpower cooperation through increased recruitment of Bangladeshi workers.
In the morning, the Chief Adviser joined a high level meeting on the Rohingya crisis. He called for redoubling global efforts to put focus on the plight of the long-persecuted Myanmar Muslim community.
Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani, the CEO of the Qatar Foundation, spoke at the meeting. She also expressed her willingness to visit Bangladesh soon.
The Chief Adviser was accompanied by Foreign Adviser Touhid Hossain, Energy Adviser Fouzul Kabir Khan, National Security Adviser Dr. Khalilur Rahman, BIDA Executive Chairman Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud bin Harun, and Senior Secretary Lamiya Morshed.

Chief Adviser urges Qataris to invest in Bangladesh
Doha, April 23, 2025: Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Wednesday urged Qatari investors to invest in Bangladesh to take advantage of the immense potentials that the country offers.
"Bangladesh is now back to business and back to business in a big way. We want your partnership," the Chief Adviser said in his speech in a program titled "Bilateral Investment Opportunities Between Qatar and Bangladesh."
The Chief Adviser said that the Interim Government had taken many steps to improve investment climate in the country and was dedicated to creating New Bangladesh free from corruption.
He shared the inspiring story of how Bangladesh once convinced Norwegian telecom operator Telenor to set up a telephone company in the country that in turn became its biggest profit-making venture.
Azad Ashraf, president of Bangladesh Forum, Qatar, delivered the welcome speech.
BIDA executive chairman Ashik Chowdhury gave a presentation before potential Qatari investors and non-resident Bangladeshis about investment opportunities in Bangladesh and the reforms undertaken by the country's Interim Government to make business and investment easier.
"If you ever consider Bangladesh the investment destination, this is probably the best time to do it," he said.
Addressing the event, Energy Adviser Fouzul Kabir Khan said when the Interim Government assumed office, Bangladesh had an outstanding debt of 3.2 billion US dollars, which has now come down to 600 million dollars. They include 254 million outstanding payments to Qatar Energy, which have come down to nil by Wednesday, he said.
He explained the Interim Government's plan for energy safety and improved infrastructure for their benefit.
Qatar's Deputy Under Secretary for Industry and Business Development Saleh Majed Al Khalafi, co-founder of Next Smart Solutions Ali Ben Fardj, among others, spoke in the program.
Foreign Adviser Md Touhid Hossain was among those present while Bangladesh Ambassador to Qatar Nazrul Islam delivered the closing remarks.

Chief Adviser Meets Leading Investors in Closed-Door Session in Doha
DOHA, April 24: Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser held a closed-door meeting with several prominent foreign investors in the Qatari capital, Doha, aiming to attract investment in some of the country’s key sectors.
The gathering included notable figures such as a former Deputy Prime Minister of the Maldives, a member of the Malaysian royal family, a former Malaysian minister, a Qatari royal family member, top bankers, and several wealthy non-resident Bangladeshis.
Addressing the investors, the Chief Adviser said that the Interim Government aims to transform Bangladesh into a manufacturing and economic hub, welcoming all forms of foreign investment.
"We want to be a top manufacturing country in the world," he stated, emphasizing that his government is offering one of the most attractive investment climates in the region.
The investors expressed interest in exploring opportunities in sectors such as manufacturing, waste management, energy, banking, and tourism—particularly in the resort district of Cox’s Bazar.
The Chief Adviser encouraged the investors to visit Bangladesh and engage in discussions with the relevant agencies.
Foreign Adviser Touhid Hossain and Senior Secretary Lamiya Morshed were also present during the meeting.
