That Argentina's economy has been out of control for a long time is nothing new to us, but to have a reference of how prices are in our neighboring countries was quite shocking to me. I had never traveled outside my country until a few months ago, when I expanded my horizons and went to Bolivia and Chile. On those trips I kept being surprised by how cheap everything was, or how expensive Argentina is. Many everyday things could be found for half the price or less than at home, which at the time was very good for my travel budget.
Que la economía de Argentina está descontrolada hace un montón de tiempo no es ninguna novedad para nosotros, pero tener una referencia de cómo son los precios en nuestros países limítrofes me resultó bastante impactante. Yo nunca había viajado fuera de mi país hasta hace algunos meses, cuando expandí mis horizontes y fui hasta Bolivia y Chile. En esos paseos no paraba de sorprenderme por lo barato que era todo, o por lo caro que es Argentina. Muchas de las cosas cotidianas se podían encontrar por la mitad del precio o menos que en casa, lo que en ese momento vino muy bien para mi presupuesto viajero.
In all this time working in hostels, I had the opportunity to meet many foreign tourists who used to say that Argentina is one of the most expensive countries in the region. My country is big and has a great diversity of prices depending on where you are, but in general they said that everything is expensive, from clothes to food and lodging. Of course, living here I had never had anything to compare it to, but when I went to Bolivia and Chile I could see it first hand. Everything was super cheap: in Bolivia what stood out the most was the food, where for $1 I could get a full plate of chicken and side dishes; and in Chile, what I liked to see the most was cheap clothes and shoes.
En todo este tiempo trabajando en hosteles, tuve la oportunidad de conocer muchos turistas extranjeros que solían decir que Argentina es uno de los países más caros de la región. Mi país es grande y tiene gran diversidad de precios dependiendo de dónde te encuentres, pero en líneas generales decían que todo es costoso, desde ropa hasta la comida y alojamiento. Por supuesto que viviendo acá nunca había tenido nada como para comparar eso, pero cuando fui a Bolivia y Chile pude verlo en primera persona. Todo salía super barato: en Bolivia lo que más destaqué fue la comida, en dónde por $1 podía obtener un plato completo de pollo y guarniciones; y en Chile, lo que más me gustó ver fue ropa y calzado barato.
Luckily, by the time I made my trip to Chile on the Southern Highway, I had a bigger budget than on my trip to Bolivia. This allowed me to buy some souvenirs from that country. I don't like ornaments or anything, so I wanted to buy something useful and I thought about clothes and shoes. At that time, six months ago, the Chilean peso was almost 1 to 1 with the Argentine peso (1.1 exactly), so it was easy to make the conversion. Also, the dollar cost 900 Chilean pesos, against the 1100 Argentine pesos I had paid to buy my bills. Everything was pretty much the same, except for the prices we saw in the shopping malls of Puerto Montt, a city only 6 hours away from the touristic Bariloche.
Por suerte, para cuándo hice mi viaje a Chile en la Carretera Austral contaba con más presupuesto que en mi viaje a Bolivia. Esto me permitió poder comprar algunas cosas de recuerdo de ese país. No me gustan los adornos ni nada, por lo que quería comprarme algo útil y pensé en ropa y calzado. En ese momento, hace seis meses, el peso chileno estaba casi 1 a 1 con el peso argentino (1,1 exactamente), por lo que era fácil hacer la conversión. Además, el dólar costaba 900 pesos chilenos, contra los 1100 pesos argentinos que yo había pagado para comprar mis billetes. Todo era bastante parecido, excepto los precios que vimos en los shoppings de Puerto Montt, una ciudad a solo 6 horas de la turistica Bariloche.
There we found that sneakers of well-known brands cost an average of $50, when in Argentina you can get the same ones for no less than $100. I could not believe that this was so cheap, because in my country you do not buy good sneakers for that price. As if that wasn't enough, in the shopping mall we visited there was a 2 for 1 promotion, in which if you bought two pairs of sneakers, you only paid for the most expensive one. So for $60 I was able to buy a pair of Puma and a pair of Skechers sneakers. To get the same products in Argentina I would not have paid so little. How much do sneakers similar to these cost in your country?
Ahí pudimos encontrar que zapatillas de marcas reconocidas costaban en promedio $50, cuando en Argentina podés conseguir las mismas por no menos de $100. Yo no podía creer que esto fuera tan barato, porque en mi país no compras zapatillas buenas por ese precio. Cómo si fuera poco, en el shopping que visitamos había una promoción de 2x1, en la que llevando dos pares de zapatillas, solo pagabas la más costosa. Así fue como por $60 pude comprar un par de zapatillas marca Puma y otro marca Skechers. Por obtener los mismos productos en Argentina no hubiese pagado tan poco. ¿Cuánto cuestan unas zapatillas similares a estas en tu país?
Another thing I had wanted to do for a long time was to change my warm jacket. The snow jacket I had been using for several years needed a replacement, and being able to buy it in Chile was a good opportunity. I got a very nice one, detachable so that I could have 3 jackets of different levels of warmth, from Forclaz, for about $130. In Argentina I would not have been able to buy such a warm jacket for that price: a similar one would have cost me at least $300.
Otra cosa que hace tiempo quería hacer era cambiar mi campera de abrigo. La campera de nieve que usaba hace varios años necesitaba un reemplazo, y poder comprarla en Chile fue una buena oportunidad. Conseguí una muy linda, desmontable para poder tener 3 camperas de diferentes niveles de abrigo, de la marca Forclaz, por unos $130. En Argentina no hubiese podido comprar una campera tan abrigada por ese precio: alguna apenas similar me hubiese costado por lo menos $300. Quedé más que feliz por mi compra en el extranjero.
These very different price comparisons could be made with many other things, such as appliances, food, lodging, transportation and more. Just crossing the border, the economy of our neighboring country manages very different values than ours. It should also be noted that the official minimum wage in Argentina is currently almost $250, while in Chile it is more than $500 (although in reality, informal workers can earn an average of $400 and $850 respectively). Low wages and high prices is what sadly characterizes our country lately, and we are a bit used to that. Seeing how cheap everything is on the other side leaves you with a feeling of sadness, but at least this time I was able to take something as a souvenir. My wish is that in the next few years our economy will improve and everything will be better, or at least that buying something new will not be a luxury for a few.
Estas comparaciones de precios muy diferentes podían hacerse con muchas otras cosas, como electrodomésticos, comida, alojamiento, transporte y más. Solo cruzando la frontera, la economía de nuestro país vecino maneja unos valores muy diferentes a los nuestros. También hay que tener en cuenta que el salario mínimo oficial en Argentina actualmente es de casi $250, mientras que en Chile es de más de $500 (aunque en la realidad, en promedio los trabajadores informales pueden llegar a ganar $400 y $850 respectivamente). Sueldos bajos y precios altos es lo que tristemente caracteriza a nuestro país últimamente, y estamos un poco acostumbrados a eso. Ver qué tan barato es todo del otro lado te deja una sensación de tristeza, pero al menos en esta oportunidad pude llevarme algo de recuerdo. Mi deseo es que en los próximos años nuestra economía mejore y todo logre acomodarse para bien, o por lo menos que comprarse algo nuevo no resulte un lujo para unos pocos.
