Black nightshade is used in traditional medicine for various purposes. The plant contains alkaloids, glycosides, and flavonoids that are believed to have medicinal properties.
However, it is important to note that the plant also contains toxic compounds, including solanine and glycoalkaloids.
Black nightshade is also considered a weed by some farmers, as it can compete with crops for nutrients and water.

While black nightshade berries are commonly used in Sri Lankan cuisine, the leaves of the plant are also edible and can be used to make a salad. In Sri lanka we are called Manathakkali sambol". and "Kalukamberiya sambol".
Here's a simple recipe for making a black nightshade leaf salad:
Ingredients
2 cups of black nightshade leaves
1 onion, sliced
1 tomato, sliced
2 green chilies, sliced
Juice of 1 lime
Salt to taste
Method of making
Remove the stems and any damaged or yellow leaves.
Rinse the black nightshade leaves in cold water and drain them well.
Roughly chop the leaves into small pieces and place them in a coocking fan.
Then put the pot with leaves on the stove and take it off the stove when the color of the leaves changes within two to three minutes.
Then filter the water and squeeze the leaves till the water is removed and get ready.
Add the sliced onion, tomato, and green chilies to the bowl.

Season the salad with salt and lime juice to taste.
Toss everything together well.
Serve the salad immediately.
As for the benefits of eating black nightshade leaves, they are a good source of vitamins A and C, as well as antioxidants.
