I really like using turmeric in my recipes because it's very healthy and has a beautiful color.
So I wanted to share with you all today how to make turmeric powder at home using pure turmeric rhizomes.
The process of making homemade turmeric powder is simple, but it takes time.
Instant production of the powder is not possible. To make the turmeric powder, I used pure turmeric rhizomes that my uncle recently harvested.
I wanted to show my hive friends how to process this important and expensive spice.
Homemade turmeric powder is pure and 100% clean. If you can find turmeric rhizomes in your region, you should definitely try making this valuable spice.
In Sri Lankan homes, we typically make turmeric powder during certain months when the weather is suitable for air-drying the rhizomes.
This is the method I used. It took two weeks to process the termeric powder.
Clean the turmeric rhizomes
Wash the turmeric rhizomes well to remove any dirt, mud or sand. Cut off any small roots and clean them as well.
Boil the turmeric
Put the cleaned turmeric rhizomes in a large pot filled with water. Boil the turmeric on low heat for at least one hour.
Remove the water
After boiling, remove the water and let the turmeric cool.
Cut the turmeric
After boiling, remove the water and cut the turmeric into thin slices. This will help it dry faster.
Dry the turmeric
Spread the turmeric slices in a single layer on a clean, dry surface. Place the turmeric in direct sunlight for 5-7 days or until completely dry. Turn the slices occasionally to ensure even drying.Once dry, the turmeric will look like the picture shown
Grind the turmeric
Once the turmeric is completely dry, grind it into a fine powder using a blender or a mortar and pestle. Here you can see guys what is the traditional mortar and pestle we used in past. But here i used the grinder.
Store the turmeric powder
Store the turmeric powder in an airtight container in a cool, dry place.
