In 2010, I receive in my medical office, located at the Institute of Oceanology of Cuba, a diver and friend. He had eaten a Barracuda that had been fished hours before. After my interrogation and physical examination, I corroborated the diagnosis of a Ciguatera.
Several friends tried the fish, but the only one who had symptoms was him, as he ate more of it. He showed digestive symptoms and signs, muscular pains, tiredness and specific neurological signs.
I indicated treatment according to his evolution time and referral to the Institute of Toxicology for morbidity registration.
With time, his health condition improved, without showing clinical recurrence.
Besides being a diver, he is an underwater photographer.
A few weeks passed, and he made a call to me from abroad. He told me to stop by his parents' house, and to pick up 7 Russian cameras, which he had kept for years.
I never expected that. It took me by surprise and was a nice gesture of thanks. I knew that he would soon travel to another country, and with me they would be in good hands.
That is why today I want to share with you these 7 cameras. In the initial photo, you can see that there are 8 of them. One of them I got from the hand of a well-known person in the Cuban acting world.
De la intoxicación por pescado a las cámaras Soviéticas
En el año 2010, recibo en mi consultorio médico, ubicado en el Instituto de Oceanología de Cuba, a un buzo y amigo. Había comido una Barracuda que pescaron horas previas. Tras mi Interrogatorio y el Examen Físico, corroboro el diagnóstico de una Ciguatera.
Varias amistades probaron el pescado, pero el único que tuvo síntomas fue él, al comer en mayor cantidad. Mostraba síntomas y signos digestivos, dolores musculares, cansancio y signos neurológicos específicos.
Le indiqué el tratamiento de acuerdo a su tiempo de evolución y remisión al Instituto de Toxicología para el registro de morbilidad.
Con el tiempo, mejoró su estado de salud, sin mostrar recurrencia clínica.
Aparte de buzo, es fotógrafo submarino.
Pasaron unas semanas, y me hizo una llamada desde el exterior. Me dijo que pasara por la casa de sus padres, y que recogiera 7 cámaras rusas, que conservaba desde hace años.
Eso nunca lo esperé. Me tomó de sorpresa y fue un lindo gesto de agradecimiento. Sabía, que viajaría pronto para radicarse en otro país, y conmigo estarían en buenas manos.
Por eso, hoy deseo compartirles estas 7 cámaras. En la foto inicial, podrán ver que son 8. Una de ellas, la obtuve de la mano, de una persona conocida en el mundo actoral cubano.
Global 35 and Smena 8M cameras:
These cameras are used with 35 mm rolls, and have a smaller size that makes it well portable and with a youthful appearance.
The Smena 8M was the best selling model in Cuba in the 1970s. It also earned such merit worldwide, among all the models made by the LOMO factory.
Designed for a massive public due to its low cost. They were ideal initiation cameras to learn the Art of Photography.
Cámara Global 35 y Smena 8M:
Estas cámaras se usan con rollos de 35 mm, y tienen un tamaño más pequeño que la hace bien portable y con una apariencia juvenil.
La Smena 8M, fue el modelo que más se vendió en Cuba en la década de los 70. También se ganó tal mérito a nivel mundial, dentro de todos los modelos hechos por la fábrica LOMO.
Diseñadas para un público masivo por su bajo coste. Fueron cámaras ideales de iniciación para aprender el Arte de la Fotografía.
Lubitel 2 and Lubitel 166B camera:
Because of their design, with a vertical body and their 2 lenses, they are cameras in demand by collectors. Unlike the previous ones, here a 12O mm film can be used.
It gives us a large viewfinder at the top. That specific detail is what attracts the most attention among those who like these analog cameras. It is like manipulating an expensive camera, such as the Rolleiflex, but using a simple, inexpensive Soviet camera for non-professional use. Something that is defined by the name of the brand: Lubitel, which in Russian means Amateur.

Por su diseño, con un cuerpo vertical y sus 2 lentes, son cámaras demandadas por los coleccionistas. A diferencia de las anteriores, aquí se puede usar una película de 12O mm.
Nos regala un visor de gran tamaño en su parte superior. Ese detalle específico es lo que más llama la atención entre los que gustan de estas cámaras analógicas. Es como manipular una cámara cara, como la Rolleiflex, pero usando una cámara soviética sencilla, económica y para uso no profesional. Algo que lo define el nombre de la marca: Lubitel, que en ruso significa Aficionado.
Camera Kiev 4 and Kiev 4A:
Seeing any Kiev camera, brings up memories for me. Of the many photos, in black and white, that my father took during our childhood. It was the brand of camera he always used, at that stage of our lives.
Equipment with a strong metal body, like many of the things that were being built after World War II; where Germany had its world-renowned stamp of quality.
The Soviets designed this Kiev, along the lines of certain German brands, such as the Contax.
These cameras use rangefinders for focusing. The Kiev 4 incorporates a light meter in its design. That way a better exposure of the scene is achieved.
Cámara Kiev 4 y Kiev 4A:
Ver cualquier cámara Kiev, me hace aflorar recuerdos. De la gran cantidad de fotos, en blanco y negro, que mi padre tomó durante nuestra infancia. Era la marca de cámara que siempre usó, en esa etapa de nuestras vidas.
Equipo con un cuerpo de metal fuerte, como muchas de las cosas que se construían después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial; donde Alemania tenía su sello de calidad de reconocimiento mundial.
Los soviéticos diseñaron esta Kiev, siguiendo las líneas de ciertas marcas germanas, como la Contax.
Son cámaras que usan Telémetro para el enfoque. La Kiev 4 incorpora un Exposímetro de luz en su diseño. De esa manera se logra una mejor exposición de la escena.

Zorki camera:
Zorki, one of the flagship rangefinder brands of the URSS. With very interesting origins, which began in 1956. The result of their photos were spectacular, as well as the effort they put into their construction.
This Zorki 4, has a design that catches, with superior slopes, in the style of the first Russian FED cameras, which followed the initial models of the famous German Leica.
This camera came to me, years after the gift from my patient.
It is a souvenir I keep from a great Cuban actor. I got it from the hands of Erdwin Fernandez son, a few days before he emigrated to the USA.
Cámara Zorki:
Zorki, una de las marcas telemétricas insignias de la URSS. Con unos orígenes bien interesantes, que se gestaron desde 1956. El resultado de sus fotos eran espectaculares; igual, el empeño que le pusieron a su construcción.
Esta Zorki 4, tiene un diseño que atrapa, con desniveles superiores, al estilo de las primeras cámaras rusas FED, que siguieron los modelos iniciales de la afamada Leica alemana.
Esta cámara llegó a mí, años después del regalo de mi paciente.
Es un recuerdo que conservo de un gran actor cubano. La obtuve de manos de Erdwin Fernández hijo, a pocos días antes de que emigrara a los Estados Unidos.
Zorki 5
Seeing them together in this photo is gratifying. It allows me to remember how they came to me, and to appreciate the constructive quality that their creators put into them.
It flies my mind back to a time when each one of them was used for the enjoyment of families, photographers, and those who were open to crystallize their experiences in the images of a photo.

Verlas reunidas en esta foto es algo gratificante. Me permite recordar la forma en que llegaron a mí, y valorar la calidad constructiva que le pusieron sus creadores.
Volar mi mente, a una época donde cada una de ellas fue usada para el disfrute de familias, fotógrafos, y de aquellos que estaban abiertos a cristalizar sus vivencias en las imágenes de una foto.
