The Gbagyi people are the indigenous people of Niger state in Nigeria. They're known for their strength which is both exhibited by the men and women. The same level of strength is required of their women during childbirth, thus, they rarely visit the Hospital during labor. My mum told me there was honor in their time when a woman bears the pain and delivers a baby with no assistance from the midwives. A lot has changed, a few still practice this old tradition while others have accepted modern medicine. A few months before the arrival of a baby, the mother of either the husband or wife visits to help educate the new mum on how to bathe the child, how to feed the child and other few things she needs to know about motherhood.
The old women in that village make merry by making certain noises of joy. If the gender is that which the couple was expecting, they celebrate it by drinking palm wine or killing an animal depending on the family's financial strength. Before now, rubbing powder on the neck of those who visited was a sign that there was a new birth, but people no longer do that, they do it the traditional way especially for those settling in villages.
The Gbagyi people give names base on the following: The day of the week the child was born, the circumstances around his birth, the parent's choices, and the event that happened in that particular year. Sometimes they choose a tribal name and include a biblical or English name for academic purposes.
If a child is born on Sunday, the parents name the child "ladi" which means Sunday, or "lariba" if it's Monday. I guess such naming was done to help remember when exactly a child was born but it had continued unto this generation. Naming due to circumstances and events that happened in that particular month or year is a common way of naming among the Gbagyi people, though civilization has come they still use it to recall events. Nowadays people had resolved into giving positive names when they got the orientation that a child's name has a future implication on him. So, the naming of a child with foreign names is allowed in this modern time unlike the past when the naming of a child was strictly a tribal name.
