Juju music started after World War 2 when electrical instruments were beginning to be popular. It got rooted in Nigeria in the 1920s when musicians like Earnest Olatunde Thomas (Tunde Nightingale), Fatai Rolling Dollar, I. K. Dairo, Dele Ojo, Ayinde Bakare, Adeolu Akinsanya, King Sunny Ade started to perform in urban clubs across the country. If you were born during this period, you will be familiar with their music.
The musicians listed above are all my favorite but for the purpose of this post I will be talking about one, Ebenezer Obey. Ebenezer made the juju music genre more popular because he brought new styles like mixing pop, reggae and funk to it. Ebenezer, known for his peculiar music, officially started his career in the mid 1950s after moving to Lagos state.
In 1973, he released an album titled, *'The Horse, The Man & The Son' *. This is one of my favorites. The album has about 8 tracks and all the tracks are all connected in one single story about how we humans can never be satisfied or pleased.
The second track revolves around a story of a man traveling with his son and their donkey. As the elder, the father rode the donkey while the son walked on. As they walked further, a sojourner saw them and complained that how will the father let his son walk while he rode the donkey. The father came down and let his son ride the donkey while he walked. As the journey continued, they met another sojourner who said, "Foolish father, he walks home, the baby rides a donkey".
The Father joined his son on the donkey as the donkey walked on. Another sojourner saw them and said you both are killing the donkey, two people on a donkey?. The father and son came down and they both continued the journey as another sojourner saw them and said you walk around, but your donkey is free.
From the story above, if I were the father, I would be frustrated because I would not know what to do. We humans cannot not be pleased because our wants and needs are so numerous that if a list is made, it will be an endless one.
Here is something to motivate you, whatever you have appreciated and cherish it. Be satisfied with what you have, always be yourself and go for what you want regardless of what people might say. Listening to people makes one indecisive, make the wrong decisions and miss out on opportunities.
