GREETINGS WONDERFUL HIVERS
First of all, I did like to say a big thank you to the admins of this wonderful community for the opportunity given to us to be part of this and hence organization such a wonderful contest, taking us far aback to when we where children, I am very much delighted to telling you how much games I did played during school vacations. Also, since this is my first post in this wonderful community, I would like it to be a memorable one. Just relax, sit back, and enjoy yourselves while reading.
For a start, I am a Nigerian, and in my country as a kid while growing up, a lot of children's games were played. After all the activities were done, gaming was usually the last thing to be done. From story telling and a variety of other things, gaming was always among those things we did to make us happy.
Sincerely speaking, looking far back and now to the present , seeing kids these days, I just feel sad to say that the advancement of technology has really taken most of our childhood cultures and hence deprives these children these days of the fun they need to have. I feel for them though. Sincerely, childhood was fun.
Hence, it's on this note that I would therefore like to discuss some of those childhood games I played as a kid during school vacations.
FOOTBALL: I would like to start at my very best. Among most of those games I played, football was my favourite. I could literally go hours without food just to play football. I can remember vividly how I was deprived of food most nights and also beaten and scolded by both my mom and dad for playing football, but I still never stopped. The love for this game was massive. I recall being sent by my mother to assist her in selling some items, but I ended up in the pitch watching the ongoing football match, and before I knew it, it was late in the evening, and I ended up selling nothing. That night was not funny. I received the beating of my life, but this never stopped me from playing my favorite game.
HIDE AND SEEK: This was also one of the best games we played as children. The game is usually comprised of many children, depending on the available number of children present at that particular time. So what is mostly done is one person is chosen at radom for a start, while others go looking for various places to hide. The chosen person usually closes his/her eyes while others hide, then at the count of three, when everybody is well hidden, the chosen person begins the search with eyes open. Anybody you see becomes the next person to seek others. It was really fun to say since we really enjoyed ourselves.
THUG OF WAR: This was among the games we played more often. It was easy to start up and was really great. Our parents usually choose a side and support it, which was fantastic and fascinating. In all that was needed, since it was a locally conducted game, we just needed a really strong half stick, or in the absence of that, our hands were used.
Here, children are equally selected and split into two groups, and a leader is chosen. This leader is always the one to stand in front, and a line is drawn on the ground to separate both sides, so while the game begins, any side that pulls the opposite side over is the winner. It was a really great game to play.
TIRE RIDING: This was one interesting game for the boys. Back then, as I can remember, every child in my neighborhood had a tire, and when it was time for everyone to come showcase theirs, we were all gathered on the nearest field to do the riding. It was really fun back then to have tires ridden by us. To crown it all, if we had been sent messages, to make us deliver such messages at top speed, tires were given to us to enable us to come back quickly. My mom was usually the one who would remind me to even go with my tire, lol.
THE POLICE AND THIEF GAME: This was usually very interesting. Not a very large space is needed to play this. All that was required was a sheet of paper, a pen, and a group of at least five people.
Then this paper is divided into pieces according to the number of people present. The various words like: THIEF, POLICE, SIR, DOCTOR, NURSE, etc. are inscribed on them. The papers are folded, and everyone had to pick at random, so the person who picks police shouts "POLICE," and the person who picks "SIR" answers, and the police instruct the SIR to catch the thief. It was basically a game of luck, so if the sir gets lucky and picks the right person, he/she wins along with the others, and the thief fails, for the record was taken. This was done in repetition, for at the end, the scores were calculated. The winner was the person with the highest score.
TRY! TRY!! TRY!!! YOUR LUCK: This was one interesting game to play as a kid back then. Any number of children was required, so we had to choose our numbers like this: 5, 2, 4, 6, and so on. Then our one hand is been swung and the song is chanted along side as" try! try!! try!!! your luck chose your number way you like then all hands will be on deck, the we have to count once the hands on deck matches with your number you are out. This will be done until it is down to the unlucky person, then others will have to beat your hands.
The beating usually follows a pattern: you will be slapped three times on your back palm, and then you will begin to dodge; the person beating your hands will only stop when he/she misses. It was usually painful, but it was fun, and no matter how much we cried while playing it, we always wanted to keep going.
There were loads of interesting games we played as children growing up. I couldn't help but laugh all the way through writing this post. It has been great to remember all this.
Thanks everyone for reading through
Much love, from me to you
